Hi
I am trying to find information on my great grandmother's family, the Wells family who travelled around the south. Her name was Ellen Wells b. 1881 in Ringwood, Hampshire. She had a brother Henry b. 1871 also in Ringwood. I think her mother's name was Eliza. I have them on the 1881 census as sleeping in tents at Eling (New Forest Bartley Green) but I can't find anymore information than that. Any help or ideas on where to look?

Hi
I think that this could very well be the right family but have nothing but Henry to link it to the Henry on the 1881 census. I have tried to connect all the names you have listed but have found nothing more!
Thanks anyway,
Westy

ellen wells born 1881 in hampshire her mother was eliza bland or jeff and her father was william wells.she had a number of brothers and sisters.i have them listed somewhere as well.williams father was george and his mother was elizabeth smith. ellen married henry scott and had a number of children.she married in 1902 and died in 1956. henry her brother was born 3rd june 1869.dont worry your birth date for henry is different to mine.they often mixed up their years old.that was his baptism date i have given you so he could even be older.i do have a few more details if you want them.regards cathayb

Hi
I'm sure now that this is the right family as I know that Ellen definitely married in 1902 and died in 1956 because my dad went to the funeral at Thorney Hill. My grandad Jack Scott was Ellen's second child. Thanks for the info and anything else you have on the family would be great. Are you related in anyway?
Regards
Westy.

Hi
I'm interested in the Jeff/Bland connection
I have, well my girls through their dad are connected to the Jeff[e] and Bland families round that way, Matthew Jeff b about 1842 around Basingstoke & Phoebe Bland b about 1843, Reading. from what I can figure they had a whole pile of children then got married about the time the seventh child was born (1888), they had Mary Ann, Shadrack, Ann Selina, Elizabeth, William, Sarah, Phoebe and Sarah Ann between 1863 and 1890.
Sarah married Eneas Sherwood, going back up Eneas' tree his parents were Henry Sherwood and Annie Sharrard, children other than Eneas being Robert, Faith, Abraham and Olivia, they also had several children before they married.
Curiously Sarah Jeff's parents Matthew & Pheobe and Eneas' parent's Henry & Annie seem to have had a double wedding as on the GRO they are all in the same page (JAS, 1888, Lymington, Hampshire, 2b page 1031).
Eneas & Pheobe's daughter another Pheobe married Cyril Richer in Essex, he is my girls G Grandfather.
Thats about all I have at the moment as haven't done a lot on this side.

Hello Jen
Re your Bland & Jeff family, you must be related to my wife, I have a number of certificates and also believe I have the death of Matthew Bland.

Rubert123
Enos Sherwood is my husbands great uncle. We have been to the grave in France. We left a remembrance cross and took photos of the grave but I am afraid we have no photos of him.
-
Rubert123 I have a death certificate of Sarah wife of Enos dated 1919.
-
That's interesting - we thought she died before Enos went to war and he died in 1916. But perhaps 1919 was the date your copy was issued? We have a photo of Enos in uniform
-
No, it is definitely her date of death and she is definitely his wife. Could we please have a copy of Enos's photo? We would pay for any costs involved. We also have some photos of family members.
I don't know how far back you have researched but we have quite a bit that we could share with you if you would like it.
-
many thanks for your reply. There is a picture of him on a new website I found I will send you the reference.
We have photos of Phoebe and Charlotte but not of bill - Sarah's children. Phoebe my wife's (veronica) mum and her sister were fostered together when Phoebe was two or three and she was born 191. Perhaps Sarah was ill. What did she die of? Will be in touch again. would like a copy of death cert
Chris
-
Yes, of course you can have a copy. I will wait until you contact me again.
Rosalind.

to see a photo of Enos in uniform (same as we have) type in google Enos Sherwood. Click on New forest Romany Gypsies Military. Comes up with his details. Click on home at top of page.Click on galleries. Choose military. Go down to 7th row of photos and third in from left and that is him. Tall and upright wearing a cap. Don't know best way to give you details to send death cert or get in touch? Not sure if I should post here.
Chris

You are welcome to a copy of our photo if you can't get from internet. Would appreciate any info you have of the family. Only have what I have been able to find on line

Dear Chris,
Thank you for your reply. I would not want to post my contact details on here in fact they tell you not to post your email address on here. Find me on Facebook and I can then send you info privately in the message section. You will have to send me a friend request.
Do you know Enos's brothers and sisters and parents?
Best wishes,
Rosalind.

Dear edschofield10,
Are you descended from Enos’s son William and are you still living in the New Forest area? We have found descendants of Enos’s two daughters. My husband is a descendant of Abraham, Enos’s brother.
-
To JLSHER,
I am a the great grandson of Charlotte. Enos’s daughter. My grandfather who’s enos’s grandson is actually named after him, ‘Peter Enos James Richer’. Peter is still alive and well, he never knew where the name Enos came from until I found out about Enos Esau Sherwood using ancestry. Peter didn’t know anything about his family because, as we know. Charlotte and her siblings were orphans.

theres a joseph wells burried at all saints near axminster born about 1820.died 11.4.1906 aged 86 wife elizabeth. his children went to america.on his grave it says goodbye dear children far and near.

I am trying to find out information about the Wells family too. My great grandfather was sent out from the New Forest as a ten year old by himself to Australia as part of England’s child migrant scheme around 1910. His name was Reginald but my aunty said that was likely a name the authorities gave him. He was very musical and soft-spoken like my grandfather.

Message for Elvira
This is Chris Parsons and I married Veronica Richer. Charlotte was her aunt and I met her too. Remember Veronica to Peter. We were in Suffolk and now in Cornwall. Veronica knew the family history as a child and we have a picture of Enos and Veronica's Mum phoebe with her Veronica's brother Patrick who is still alive and sister who has died.
We know Enos died of wounds in 1916 and his wife Sara(h) died of the flu in 1919.
-
Sorry my last message was for Peters great grandson
Chris Parsons

To Rubert123,
Thankyou so much for replying and giving us information about Veronica and Patrick. So sorry that Veronica is no longer with us. I have just spoken to my grandfather, Peter, and he is chuffed that Patrick is still alive and if possible, when covid is all over, he would love to meet him. Apparently they were always together when they were younger, climbing trees, they even fell down a well together, soldiers even pinned them down and painted both of them aha. I would love to see the photo you have of Enos aswell. If it’s the the photo of him in his military uniform then we already have that photo.
Thankyou, oh, and by the way I’m peters grandson not great grandson :). My email is (*) if you’d like to talk more directly :).
Eddie Schofield.

Dear Eddie
So good to hear from you. It was Beryl who died. I am married to Veronica. All Beryl's family live in Swindon ( she had five children) and Patrick lives in Dorset ( he had 6 children). It is the same photo. It's the only one. We have a photo of Enos brother and other info we've found. I see they have removed your email. I am a vicar at Kenwyn with St Allen near Truro. Take a look at a Church near you (if you see what I mean).
Best wishes
Chris

To Chris,
Sorry for the mistake, Thankyou so much for replying. Wow! Didn’t know he had 6 children. Peter married my grandmother who is Italian, she is called Anacleta Rossi was a refugee from Italy after the war. Also still alive and well. She is nearly 91 years old. Peter is nearly 84. Together they had 4 children. All living in melksham, Wiltshire. Have you got Facebook? We can talk more on there?
I’m not too sure what you mean about “take a look at the church near me” part, so would like some more clarification on this.
Thankyou
Eddie
-
Yes, Facebook is easiest. If you type in Christopher Parsons and I'm the one with Truro and I'm standing in the church door way.

Hi everyone,
It’s been a while since I last posted on here but I’m looking for some help.
I’m currently trying to find as many photos as I can of my new forest gypsy ancestors.
I’m looking for any photos of the sherwoods, jeffs, blands, sherreds.
I have a photo of Enos sherwood and of Annie sherred.
Thank you.
-
Dear Ed,
Southern & New Forest Gypsy Descendants on Facebook has lots of photos and has one of Enos’ brother and other Sherwood. Could I please have a copy of the photo of Annie Sherred? I will pay all costs involved. I may also be able to help you with other branches of your family.
-
Hi JLSHER,
Thanks for the advice, I have joined the group.
I can’t seem to find the photo of Enos’s brother though?
I’m particularly looking for a photo of sarah Jeff (Enos’s wife). And her father Mathew Jeff. And Enos’s father, Henry sherwood.
Don’t be silly, I’d never charge you. Of course I can send the photo over to you. I’ll do it via personal message.
Eddie.
