I am searching for my Gunter ancestors too.
From a family bible I have the birth of Ann Gunter July 1848.
I also have her marriage certificate to Samuel Williams 16th May 1871 Nantyglo MON, which puts her year of birth at 1847/48, her father's name on the certificate is William Gunter.
From the 1881/1891 census Ann was born in Llangattock BRE but I cannot find a Ann Gunter on the previous census with a father William Gunter. The only likely one is 1851 but her age on that would give a birth of 1841/42
Any help or comments gratefully received

Hi Guys & Gals,

The Gunter has a very interesting past....and many interesting characters.
The Gunters goes back to 1035....the family seat was in Tregunter in the Brecons of Wales for some 500+ years. I believe Guntersone was Tregunters earlier name.

They even owned an estate in London...which is now apart of Kensington & Chelsea.
Its even carries the name..Tregunter Road London...look it up....oohh.. by the way..
the properties..unless your a millionaire..forget it!!

They were apart of the norman invaders who conquerored Wales under the command of Bernard de Newmarche after the collapse of the Revolt of 1088-9 against King William Rufus II, son and heir of William the Conqueror.

Some even emigrated to the US.....There was even a Unit of the Confederate army..made up from a fair number of men of the Gunter line. I believe it was the 14th Alabama Cavalry

There is even a supposed Witch...about whom a book was written.

They are..a most interesting family line.

I am related via my great grandmother on my mothers side.

Here is a photo of Tregunter taken about 1890.  The house doesn't exist any more but I believe there is still a Tregunter Farm.  Incidentally, in Welsh the 'Tre' can loosely be translated as  'the place of', which accounts for this being a fairly common prefix.

Grand picture greensleeves..I have seen it before..but a smaller copy....thats a better copy.

There is also Anne Gunter..the supposed Witch....
She was the daughter of Bryan Gunter..brother of John Gunter who married Alice Keeblewhite.
There is a book...."The Bewitching of Anne Gunter" by James Sharpe.

Then theres Col. George Gunter who aided King Charles II escape after the Battle of Worcester.

You can read a 1st hand account of the escape written by Col Gunter himself here.

I thought it would be quite easy to research Gunter in Breconshire. It's difficult to get past 1800, too many Johns and Williams. Like the photo.

Hi Peonie,

Where are you stuck? Perhaps I can help.
I have the line from my great grandmother Minnie Gunter.b1899 ...back to 1035.

Now..as they do go back such a long way...there are many of them...BUt most Gunter lines converge at around 1600 -1700 time period....then most share the same line back to 1035.
Let me know who your ealiest Gunter is..and I'll see if I have them..or i can find out anything for you. ;)

Post by: Peonie on Friday 20 November 09 13:44 GMT (UK)
Hi cripes,

Thanks for the offer. The earliest "safe" Gunter is John, b. ca. 1806 in Cantref married to Rebecca Griffiths. They have 3 children, William b. 1832, John b. 1836 and Jane b. 1846. They followed the naming pattern John/William and could be found quite easily on the censuses . So I am looking for
William.
Don't think I have seen a Minnie yet. Have seen on the Internet a few things about Gunter in Breconshire, but have very little so far.

Cripes.. Is Minnie Gunter from Oregon? My dad and I have never been able to find out who my great grand fathers parents where. His name was Harley Gunter married to Minnie Gunter (maiden Welch). Harley was born in 1895, and died in 1969... Other then that I have no info on him. I heard from my grandfather before he died that he was one of 13 children.
Title: Re: Gunter Family
Post by: cripesamighty on Tuesday 22 December 09 07:10 GMT (UK)
Hi Bushido,

I'm afraid not..my Minnie was born here in the UK...Tadley, Hampshire, England.
Though the Minnie name does appear in the Gunter line here in the UK and the US.

There is a link via the Gunters to the US in 1644. One John Gunter b1624, emigrated to Virginia. And from him comes most of if not all the Gunters I have corrisponed with in the US....and those linked to the name.

But as of yet..no-one has been able to find conclusive recorded documents stating he did indeed emigrate to the US. Though most believe he did..dispite lack of documents. Some are not convinced until documents are found to prove he did.

I am of the belief he did emigrate. I think he became involved with the slavery trade/and tobbacco growing, selling.

The Gunter line prospered and became well noted in US history. Many name places containing the name Gunter are named after the family members..like Guntersville Alabama. I believe there was also a Unit in the American Civil war made up of males from the Gunter line, 14th Alabama Cavalry I think.

You may wan to try your main libaray, and look for 2 books writen about the Gunter family in the US. "Gunter's Along the Edisto", and "More Gunters Along the Edisto" by L H Buff.

I would love copies of these books..but they appear very rare. But your libaray may have copies. They tell the life of the Gunter family in the US and would contain some very useful info.

Buut...there is the fact that some Gunter in the US came from German Gunter's...not British. And so...you nned to fine out if she was of Brirtish or German decent.

Those here in the UK I have an interest in are those of British decent coming via Welsh decent. As my line came from Wales..who then in turn coming from Normandy at the time of William the Conqueror.
The oldest know Gunter is Sir Peter Gunter (Sir Peter Gaunt dO'r) born 1034/5. A norman knight who invaded Wales around and was given lands in the Brecons for his services..A place now called Tregunter..the family seat for some 500+ years.

I shall of course keep an eye out for your Minnie and see if i can't find something for you...but as you can imagine...it busy this time of year and so don't expect results soon..if at all.

Regards
Paul

Well bushido,

I have had a good look around and come up with something that might interest you.

You say Harley Gunter married a Minnie Welch.
I believe they are both apart of this family as there is another Gunter marrying a Welch, but this time, the other way round. A male Welch marrying a female Gunter.
And using the name Minnie for one of their daughters!.
They also appear to have lived in the same area's as Harley and Minnie and around the same time, are associated with.
I believe they are related to these family...

Joseph Elbert Taylor Welch,
b: 2 JAN 1848 in Macon County, North Carolina
Elizabeth Emeline Gunter
b: 10 AUG 1851 in Cherokee County, North Carolina

Married: 14 MAY 1871 in Cherokee County, North Carolina

Children
1. Jessie Calvin Welch b: 1872 in North Carolina
2. Dora Welch b: 1874 in North Carolina
3. Candastis Josephine Welch b: 1877 in North Carolina
4. Gilmer Welch b: MAR 1880 in North Carolina
5. Amanda Welch b: BET 1880 AND 1886
6. Sherman Columbus Welch b: 19 SEP 1886 in Bushnell, Swain County, North Carolina
7. Minnie Annie Welch b: 29 OCT 1889 in Bushnell, Swain County, North Carolina
8. Nellie Louellen Welch b: 1892
9. Laura Mae Welch b: 1892

Have a feeling Harley & Minnie may have been cousins!
Certain linked to this family I would assume.

HANG ON!...THEY ARE RELATED!!!

Just found Harley and Minnie mentioned in the same family tree.
Here is the link to the tree!
Hope you find this useful.

Paul,
Thank you for all the info.. I don't really know what to do with it. I am sorta running blind right now. My grandfather passed a couple years ago, and my greatgrandfather Harley died in '69. My grandpa never met his grandpartents, or any of his aunts and uncles. All the info I have is my grandpa was born in 1920 in Proctor County, NC and moved to Medford, OR a few years shortly after. Harley was the oldest of 13, or so the story goes, and left NC because he was sick of raising his brothers and sister.  :P So anyway again thank you for the help, it may just lead to something.

You all have a great Christmas.

Actually I followed the link to Minnie and her date of birth is exactly the same as Harley's... So it could be more then likely the same people. It says she died in 1962, so I need to find out where she died, or where her 1930 census was taken, or her SSI card was issued to make for certain.
Title: Re: Gunter Family
Post by: cripesamighty on Tuesday 22 December 09 18:45 GMT (UK)
Well its something to be going on with.
It might allow us to go round the side so to speak.
Got in round the back to find Harleys parents...if you can't go direct.
I do this alot when I cant find the parents.

Find other relatives and go through them to find the parents..especially if you can find a tree.
I'm sure with this info we can find his parents...Ever throught he is using his middle name?...just a thought.
Title: Re: Gunter Family
Post by: bushido on Tuesday 22 December 09 23:07 GMT (UK)
Oh btw.. the list of Welch's you gave in text isn't the same as what i found in your link. The minnie I found in your link is for sure his wife. No question, she died in Jackson in 62, 7 years before he died in jackson. Her parents where

Father: Fidelia Welch b: 28 APR 1866 in Hazel Creek, Macon County, North Carolina
Mother: Alice Jones b: 22 OCT 1871 in Hazel Creek, Swain County, North Carolina

So I did some link chasing and I see no Gunters in her line. So they aren't directly related.

I am so sorry for high jacking this thread.. I should start a new one...

bushido...

there are 5 Minnie Welch's in that tree....and one of them is your Minnie Welch who married Harley Gunter...because Harley is also in that tree.

Not sure how you are viewing the tree...but..they are certainly there so the info I gave you is correct.

Though it doesnt show Harleys parents..it does give us leads to find anothe way round to find out who his parents were.

Post by: bushido on Wednesday 23 December 09 16:48 GMT (UK)
No the link you gave me was the correct people.. but the tree you put in the post (not in link form) had wrong date of birth.

I actually started another thread, and I have found, with the help of members here, that Pascal Cyreen Gunter is Harley's father. He had two wives with a grand total of 21 children. Harley being the second youngest to the first wife, but he had 12 younger siblings. Making him number 13. I would probably run away as well *chuckles*

1900 census was found of a Harley Gunter being 5 living with a Pascal Gunter in Swain Co., NC with a birth date of April 1895. Then 1910 census of a Harley Gunter living with a young couple, wife named Rebbecca (Becky) Prince, who is identified as his sister. Time lines all match up.

Pascal moved to Idaho with the Mormons in the late 1800's sometime. Here is his grave with all his childrens names.http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pv&GRid=24059391&PIpi=9056826

Right now I am pretty stoked that I finally figured it out who the parents of Harley were.

So.....was I of any help?

All info on US Gunter's is of use to me....if it turns out John Gunter b.1624 can be proved to of emigrated to the US c.1644. Then the links I already have will be valid.

I am of the belief that John DID emigrate to the US..but proof would be great.

There is also the link to John Gunter after whom Guntersville Alabama was named.
He married the daughter of Indian Chief Bushyhead or the Red Paint Clan.
He changed her name to Catherine....She was decended from Pocahontas's sister.
And were the great grandparents of US actor comedian Will Rogers..who died in a plane crash in 1935.

;D  Hello all! My name is Marcie Gunter Caudell, I am an author as well.
This may help some of you. This Gunter line is my family line as well, and I have been researching it for sometime.

In google books you can look up the following:

- "Illustrated History of Brecknockshire" 1886

It helped me greatly in my research ;)

Also,

-"Miscellanea , Genealogica et Heraldica" 1877
- "LLoyd Manuscripts" 1912

Hi Marcie....welcome to rootschat!

Are you in the UK or US?

The thing is ..so I have found ..99% of US Gunter believe they are related to the Gunters of Wales..And most seem to believe they come via John Gunter 1624 who is said to of emigrated to the US in 1644.

And I have been told that there are NO conslusive records to prove he did..This means...are those in the US related to the Gunters of Wales?...or are they of German Gunter lines which came from the UK.?

Dispite the lack of concrete proof.. I believe he did..but like others.. would like it proven to some degree.

So..connecting any US gunter to the Gunters of Wales..is speculative.

I have my line from my great grandmother's Gunter back to 1055......but I am in the UK..Scotland to be percise..though moved here in 06 from England.

Very few US Gunters claim to be from any other Gunter than John..so seems my experience of those in the US I have corrisponded with. They all seem to want to make a connection to John.

I have looked through at least one of the books you mention..should take another look.

Title: Re: Gunter Family
Post by: cripesamighty on Sunday 10 January 10 23:14 GMT (UK)
Hi Marcie,

I believe John DID emigrate to the US....BUT...wheres the written proof?.

Thing is..... I have corrisponed with a number of US folks with claims of links to John Gunter of Kintbury....but....none of them have written proof.
There appears to be no written documents stated John's emigration. None of them have show me proof of Johns trip to the US.

But as I say...I believe he did...dispite the lack of proof...but I would love for it to be proved by some kind of evidence. Just to be 100% sure.

I would love there to be a link....the Gunter's in the US have a very interesting history...as do the Gunter's here in the UK. With many interesting characters.

I have tried to get copies of the books "Gunters Along the Edisto" & "More Gunters Along the Edisto"...by H.F Buff ?. But they appear to be like gold dust.

One way to prove the link would be by DNA....but getting folks to part with the money for such things is not easy. And getting the right people.....male folks with the Gunter surname with lines to John...Then crossed referenced with those in the US.

I know there are a number of Studies underway....but has any of them made the link?.
Not that I know of...because of the lack of DNA donners in the UK.

I unfortunately do not carry the Gunter name..my link comes via my great grandmother on my mothers side....which makes me unsuitable for testing. Though I would like to take a test just for my own interest. And to see who else I might be related to.

May I ask where did you get the proof of your link to John.? I know a number of US Gunter's will not be convinced of the link without proof..even the most ardent genealogist..

As I say..I believe he did...even without proof...but some won't converse without pieces of paper.

The reason being...I am sure I read somewhere about John being involved with the tabacco/slave trade's...But for the life of me..I don't recall where!!!...very frustrating.

Regards
Paul

So....your saying Charles c1562.... son of John Gunter & Alice Keeblewhite..is your immigrant?

I was told there were possbily earlier immigrant's than John....but not his grandfather.
But again..no-one has evidence....not that I have seen.

So.....if Johns grandfather emigrated...how come his children and grandson where born in the UK?

Recently I was looking for a photo of Tregunter House and came across the one from Greensleeves (thank you). Since then someone told me about another website and I found 3 more photos. Unfortunately they are no use to me but I thought they might be useful to others.

http://www.coflein.gov.uk/en/site/16296/images/TREGUNTER/

Tregunter farm is still there and also a place called ‘The Lodge’ nearby. My father said there were walled gardens which belonged to the big house. You can still see them on google streetview and satellite. According to the above site the house was pulled down in 1924. I don’t know why as it is open countryside with no new roads or buildings. I can’t see any trace of the house and I think most people would not know that it was ever there.

gunterl,

Could you direct me to the passage documentation of John Gunter in 1649.  That may be the documentation that some are talking about.

I'm a Gunter from Texas, back to Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia and I assume back to Wales.

Lots of good stories in the family line.  Many of us are intertwined with the Cherokee nation.  I trace back to Augustus Gunter, who was a brother of the John Gunter that married the daughter of Chief Bushyhead.

Thanks for any help.  FYI... if you need DNA evidence from the US for anything let me know.  I trace back all along the male line.

I have no record of her baptism/birth.
She is my 4x great-grandmother (rather distant, I know!)
Anyone come across her/the name?

I did find a marriage of one William Gunter to a Gwenllian Powell 1733/4 Llandyfaelog Fach.

Where are you stuck? Perhaps I can help.
I have the line from my great grandmother Minnie Gunter.b1899 ...back to 1035.

I am one of the infamous US Gunters - John is one of my ancestors who came over in 1649. The 1st Gunter I have is William born in Monmouthshire, Wales and married to Elizabeth Gethin. Their son, Henry, was born in Andover in 1450. I have lots of blanks, such as Henry's wife and William's birthdate and all before William. Could you or anyone be of help? This is much appreciated!

Hello all,
I have just stumbled across this stream and it is fascinating.  I am very much a beginner at this, but it is proving to be an engrossing pastime...
I have so far traced & pr oven my direct paternal line, back to 1780. My father Douglas James Gunter, was born in Risca, Monmouthshire, and his Father's go back through John Arthur, Jacob, John & John, all of Machen / Bassaleg.

I have also found a Lewis Gunter who died in Bassaleg in 1743, but I haven't found definitive proof of their link as yet. I'm sure i will soon though, Machen is not a big place.
Then I have found >  1684 ~ Mar 2~ GUNTER ~Anne Thos ~Burial~Machen

Also there is a reference to a Thomas Gunter of Machen;in the national Library of Wales Archives;
Thomas Gunter, 1644 Machen. Son Morgan Thomas (Morgan ap Thomas), grandchildren Thomas Morgan, David Morgan, Margaret, Blanch & Joan Morgan children of son Morgan. Daug. Margaret married to Morgan

What I would really like to do is find out if these connect, & if we then connect back to the Abergavenny / Breconshire line to Gunterstone Tre-Gunter... Its a tantalisingly short distance up the Usk from Newport.....

Can anyone help?
Many thanks in anticipation,
Ian Gunter.

I have William 1620 married to sybilla. Their son Henry 1665 married Grace. Their son John 1699 married Catherine White. Their son John 1730 married Mary Sandford. Their son William married Mary Jerom (Jerome). Their son John 1806 married Jane White. Their daughter Eliza 1838 married Bulter. Butler is my GGG Grandfather on my mothers side.
Any information would be great
Thanks in advance.

I am looking for the ancestry of Elizabeth Gunter who was married to Edward Evans in St. Mary's Cusop on 3rd December 1737. Neither was baptized there so Elizabeth Gunter could have come from the Gunter Family of Llanigon. Does anyone have the line back to 1035? Thank you in anticipation.

Does cripesamighty have a genealogy back to 1035 of the Gunter Family of Llanigon? I descend from Elizabeth Gunter who was married to Edward Evans on 3rd Dec 1737 at St. Mary's Cusop.

I am researching my GUNTER heritage.  My grand father was William Franklin Gunter, son of Benjamin Franklin Gunter and Lucinda Wells.  Next I believe my 2nd great grandfather was William N. Gunter Jr who married Mary Alice Crowder, then my 3rd great grandfather was William N. Gunter Sr. who married Phoebe Hodges. My 4th great grandfather was Augustus Gunter, brother of John Gunter who founded Gunterville.  I have been told that we defended from John Gunter from Wales.  Still researching if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you all in advance.
