Hi Buffy
He seems to be relatively newly married in 1881 - with a young child - and there is no obvious match in 1871 or 1861.
You might have to go the route of buying the birth cert, (to find Mary's maiden name), then finding the marriage which should give his father's name and tracing back from there.
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)

Hi,Thanks for reply, 1st child was Mary J b abt 1879 LLanono Radnorshire ,all the other children born troedyrhiw merthyr tydfil. regards buffy

I think it is likely that Mary J was born Llanwonno - the census record might be misspelled.
Unfortunately there are several possibilities.
Are there any relatives staying with them at any point on the censuses? Are there any family names that might help - names were often passed down from one generation to the next.
Perhaps you could post the census details if you have them?
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)

Hi again Buffy
This looks like the marriage
Marriage
March quarter 1879
LLOYD David
WARD Mary
Knighton 11b 167
It could be that baby Mary was a wee bit premature, lol!
Ordering the marriage cert will give David's father's name and occupation, with a bit of luck, enabling you to trace them backwards. Unless anyone has access to the parish records?
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)
