Title: Horatio Doncaster
Post by: Damacastria on Sunday 01 June 08 22:19 BST (UK)
Has anyone heard of this man? He was apparently a seaman, fireman, dock labourer. He changed his name from Damacastria to Doncaster and I really need to found out where he originated. He was born in 1854, if his death certificate is correct - it gives his age as 47 when he died in May 1901. He married in Devon, then spent some years in Bristol, then finally ended up in Cardiff, dying at 40 Ordell Street in Roath, Cardiff. I have found him on no census, ever. He was my great grandfather. Many thanks.

Did he marry Susanna Cork or Lottie Metters in 1878

What were their childrens names and where and when were they born

There is an 1880 death in East Stonehouse for a James H Damacastria b 1876

Hi

Sorry - our messages crossed.  I have just amended my reply above but you won't have seen it.  Strange that the marriage was 1878 but the child was b 1876

Do you have a copy of their 1878 marriage cert as it should show his fathers name and occupation

Yes, it gives his father as John Damacastria, fisherman (it does not say that he was deceased, but I have not found him, either).

In 1901, daughters Kate, Blanche and Polly were living together at 40 Ordell St in Roath so that would account for why he died in Roath

Yes, and Susanna died at the same address in 1898 (both deaths registered by a Maria Hall). It must have been cramped for them all, living in 2 rooms ..

Hi there. Does this mean that you are a MacKenzie? Am I right in thinking that your father was either Kenneth, Leonard, or Donald? That would be very exciting, as I've had no luck tracing the children! I have in my tree a marriage Mackenzie-Burbery (2 daughters, 2 sons); a Mackenzie-Matthews (1 son); and Mackenzie-Pomfrett (1 son). However I've not been able to verify any of the info.

Look forward to hearing from you!

This is just brilliant. So you are Douglas, born 1958? I have a lot of family history and have been working on it for years. Horatio has been very illusive but I do have some stuff, mainly from the Maritime History Archive in Canada. Could we swap info? I have done my (our) family tree as text boxes within Excel, and I have loads of pages of history in Word.

I'm so pleased to hear about your father - it makes our ancestors feel closer somehow.

I lived and worked in France for many years, and have been in London since 1995, and I am Ruth, descended from your grandmother's brother Arthur Leonard Damacastria/Doncaster.

I'm so happy to hear from you!

My email is (*), and I can save you quite a lot of work! This is just wonderful. Please email me so that we can communicate personally? Amongst other things, I can put you and your Dad in contact with family in Bermuda - direct family, as they are descended from your Dad's aunt !
