Title: Marriage lookup?
Post by: aghadowey on Sunday 08 June 08 10:44 BST (UK)
William K. Mairs (or possibly Mayrs or Marrs?)
born 1831 & died 1900 Dernagross, Aghadowey, Londonderry
married Sarah B.
born 9 Apr.1837 & died 5 Jan.1916 Banbridge, Co. Down
first trace I can find of William is in 1880 when he is getting a pew in Aghadowey. There are other Mairs/Mayrs families in area but not sure if he belongs to any of them.

Can anyone find a marriage for William K. Mairs to Sarah B.? (no idea where it might have taken place)

Hi, I have a William Kennedy Mairs in my background but I don't know how how he fits in either.
I know that his will says that he left money to Robert Wilson farmer (married to Martha Mairs) and to James S Mairs presbyterian minister.

Martha Mairs and James S Mairs are brother and sister to my great grandfather John Mairs b 1847 d 1902. They are the children of James Mairs b 1798 and Nancy Miller m 30 Sept 1829.

William K. could be another brother as his birth date fits in. The other children from this line are Alexander, Margaret, and Robert. My only other thought is that he was an uncle and the brother of James Mairs b 1798. If this were the case then his parents would have been James Mairs b 1761 and Martha Kennedy. He fits in here somwhere!!!!!

I have the following (didn't know there was also a Robert in this family):
James Mairs (1798-1882), Crosscandley, m. Nancy Millar (c1806-1898).
1. Martha Mairs, eldest dau., m.(1863) Robert Wilson.
2. Rev. James Septimus Mairs (1839-1927).
3. John (1847-1902) m. Margaret Black and had family.
4. Alexander M. Mairs (c1841-1874), Philadelphia.
5. Margaret "Maggie" Mairs, youngest dau., m.(1869) William Taylor.

Is the William Kennedy Mairs you mentioned the one who lived at Dernagross and died 1900? I can find nothing listed for him in PRONI Will Extracts.

Yes the William Kennedy Mairs is the one at Dernagross.

You have the same information that I do except for Robert. I can't find anything on him either.

The order of births on the family tree I have goes like this. (no dates)

Martha, Alexander, Margaret, Rev James, Robert, and John. This tree was done by a
young relative and could have a lot of mistakes in it. John and his wife Margaret had a
baby they called Robert Alexander which leads me to believe that there was a Robert. They also had a William.

Sorry I can't be of much help!

Thanks for the information- I had most of it already but some was new. Unfortunately we aren't allowed to post details of living people here so I've had to edit your post.
If you send me a PM (personal message) with your email address I can send you the information I've found on the Mairs family.

Nancy Mairs was a daughter of James Mairs- the marriage appeared in the local papers.
Have not come acress an Andrew Mairs in Macosquin area. There are quite a few Marthas in the Mairs family.

Hi there....I've just joined up and found this thread on the Mairs and/or Mayrs of Crosscandley...which, is....'us!!  i.e. that's my last name and enough work has been done by 'us' to recognise the family tree mentioned here.

So...first of all....who are you and/or do I already know you?!

Although it may be your name, and you have done a lot of work on it, and others as well, I dont think you have the monopoly of research, that is free to anyone, as is sharing but when you question who is who that is an invasion of privacy.

I suspect that elagh1 was just surprised to see a thread about his family here on the Derry board and is curious about finding new relatives and hoping to exchange family details.
Welcome to Rootschat, David. After you've made 3 posts you'll be able to use PM (personal message) system to exchange details like email addresses, etc. which we aren't allowed to post on the boards.

P.S.- I'm not related to your family but have collected a lot of details on them as well as other local families.

Oh dearie me.

Perhaps my personal style of communication in that particular moment gave rise to a misunderstanding or misinterpretation.

Meaning, by way of explanation and enlightenment... that my intuition, or rather my slight suspicion, at the time of writing that post, transpired to have much veracity... namely, the member in question, by an amazing coincidence of timing is a direct member of my own ancestral family, we are already very well known to one another, have met in person despite living thousands of miles apart and are in fairly frequent communication outside of this forum, about, among other matters, our family tree. A tree, which of course, I immediately recognized in the thread, and hence permitted myself to become a trifle animated with excitement.

Regrets if I have somehow inadvertently and unintentionally offended your, or anyone else's, personal sensibilities.

Be well.

Regards

David

Thanks for the understanding Moderator.

I just posted my response before I read your own observation.

Am looking forward to moving into more family information in the time ahead...but for now must sign off as it is definitely time to retire, given the hour at my current point on the globe!

Using an old Millar Will to sort out the family and came across this old topic I started in 2008. Just in case anyone is interested-

William K[ennedy] Mairs married 13 Aug.1878 Philadelphia to Sarah U. Beck (1837-1916).
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q2WN-FQT5

He died 1900-

Sarah Beck Mairs listed as born Co. Down in 1911 (may or may not be correct)-

Died there in 1916-
