Hi Geoff & welcome to Rootschat  :)
It might be worth looking at the local newspapers for that time to see if there is an article concerning the presentation.  How did you come by the Rose Bowl?

First of all, I would like to say a big thank you all for your help,
Right, now this is how it started. :)
I'm researching the history of Fletching Sussex, I'm allways looking for anything to do with the village and surrounding hamlets, one day I looked on the web and saw that a rose bowl was up for sale [the one I mention in my post].
So I brought it. And then I dissided to look up Arthur J Nell,
someone other than me who had wanted to buy the bowl told me that Arthur had came from Newhaven and that he has got Arthur's Boer war medal. So I started looking for him. I have not yet read the papers from that time. but I have read the
book SUSSEX SAPPERS by Morling, and it mentions the fact that Lord Sheffield gives a party and that each man from Eastbourne Newhaven & Seaford are presented with a Rose bowl each.
I do have the lists of men from Eastbourne Newhaven & Seaford so there must be 100's of these bowls somewhere.
So, Arthur was born 1873 and by 1891 he was working in the cement works, he was also in the cement works football team which I have a photo of, kindly taken from a photo kept by The Newhaven Local Maritime Museum, ;)
by 1892 he had enlisted in the 1st, Sussex Royal Engineer Volunteers, by 1901 he got his rose bowl.
What happen to him after this I do not know yet.
Can anybody put a date to his death please... :'(
Again Many Many Thanks...

Hi Geoff,
I too can't find him on the 1901 census so maybe he was overseas ( the 2nd Boar war) & that's maybe where the medals came from  :)
His death is not showing on FreeBMD but that doesn't surprise me as that could be as late as  the 1940's or 1950's or later.  Only 1 marriage found for Arthur Nell but that's in W. Derby in 1922 so a bit of a long-shot  :-\
Does this other collector have a family interest in Arthur?  Such a nice story!

The rose bowl came from Ebay...
Story so far;
Iv got hold of Arthur's war papers which has him in the 2nd boer war. it looks like he joined the south African police
as did a lot of soldiers [this is on his papers]
I'm going to put an article in the local newspaper to see if anybody knows anything,
Many Many Thanks...
to be continued

Hi all, right I'm getting closer  I went to the library today and found some things on the 1st Sussex royal volunteers, but not the presentation of the rose bowl!
but I did find about the football at Sheffield Park which is connected to Arthur Nell,
I did not get time to look at the 1851census for the rest of Arthur's family, so I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to do lookup for them for me please then that way I will have both family's [Iv got Arthur's mothers side]
Arthur's Mother is buried in Newhaven somewhere and I'm hoping to find out were it is this weekend [hopfuly]
the story will continue...

It's getting rather confusing  :P

Okay found this marriage on IGI
Harriet NELL = Henry LAW
13 jan 1824 Southwick Sussex

then this;
Children of John WHITE and HARRIETTE
John BISHOP WHITE b 1 april 1833 chr 9 oct 1836 New Shoreham
Joseph WHITE  b 10 aug 1836 chr 9 oct 186 New shoreham

so Harriet ?? marries George NELL and has Caroline b c 1819 (mother of joseph Wm Nell who is the dad of Arthur J NELL)
Then Harriet NELL marries Henry LAW (in 1824) and has Henry b c 1829 (he is her son in the 1851 census)
Harriet marries John WHITE  and has John and Joseph

arrghhh cannot find Harriet's marriage to John White

Hi Geoff if you contact Peter Bailey via Newhaven Museum he has a article in the Sussx Express each week called memory lane in which things are printed that are taken from the Newhaven Museum
he could perhaps print the photo of the Portland Cement Works namign Arthur Nell, it may stir up some memories from the townsfolk.

Hi Geoff4, I am treasurer of Newhaven Museum. I have been in contact with the guy with the medal and can send you a photo of Nell. email me through the Newhaven Museum website (info@....) I would like a photo of the bowl please if  possible. Nell returned to SA, joined the Police force and then developed some nasty habits with the young native men of the village!! They were afraid to report him but he then tried his luck with another Police officer who didn't appreciate his attentions and he was given 1 yr hard labour for 12 charges. I can't find any record after that. Pete

Geoff has decided to not pursue this as he has connections with youngsters and feels that any equiry into Nell and his habits might be taken the wrong way. However I would like to know what became of him  just to file in the museum. Regards Pete
