Title: Thomas Hazell
Post by: kimhughes on Friday 13 June 08 16:35 BST (UK)
Has anyone any ideas?  My great grandmother Elizabeth Hazell was living in Newburgh Street, Harpurhey, Manchester on the 1901 census.  RG13/3753 page 44 and 45  It shows she is living with a man Thomas Hazell.  That is not his real surname as she is the Hazell.  You can see her mother two doors away living with her son and Elizabeth's illigitimate son Thomas age 11.  Has anyone any ideas how I could find the real surname of her partner.  I do feel this is the father of my grandfather as he is also Thomas.

I wouldnt jump to too many conclusions here without a lot of investigating and a lot of backing up with evidence!

Did you see that the h/h 2 doors away is headed by Alfred HAzell, then has his wife Harriet Hazell and a baby, then brother-in-law Daniel HAzell? Then mother Eliz. and nephew Thomas as you mention.

Bro -in-law could be step brother, could be his fathers from a different marriage. If it is bro-in-law as we know it, wifes sister, that implies that a HAzell married a Hazell in that family. Maybe your Elizabeth did the same.

Hi

In 1891,
Young Elizabeth is living with old Elizabeth and what look like a lot of siblings and a William Rowieden, two years older than her.  What's the chance?

Could she just have named the baby aftewr a family memner - father, grandfather etc?

Sorry, can't see original, Ancestry playing up!

Yes and there is a line in the father's name box.  I have followed the older Elizabeth on the census since 1851 living with her mum and dad in Winsham, Somerset her maiden name was Singleton.  In 1861 she is living in Parish of Chard with her husband William.  In 1871 she is in Colyton as head of house but married with four children.  One of her children also Elizabeth is age 4 and is my great grandmother who had illigitimate Thomas. I have the birth certificate born in Croydon Workhouse Infirmary. In 1881 she is lodging in Manchester with her children and thereagain shown as married.  In 1891 she is shown as a widow living with some of her children including daughter Elizabeth and grandson Thomas.  In 1901 she is living with her son Alfred and Thomas is living with them.  Her daughter Elizabeth is living two door away with a man named Thomas and I think he took her name for respectability and I think he may be my grandfather's real father.

Thank you all for your comments
