Title: FROME family of New Sarum - help needed
Post by: Philcandy on Thursday 26 June 08 20:03 BST (UK)
Some time ago I posted a request for help with the FROME family from Wiltshire, and thought I had exhausted that line of inquiry (see: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,226325.msg1197562.html#msg1197562)

But a Will has opened up some new avenues, and I would appreciate more help.

The Reverend Dr Thomas FROME (ca 1735-1778) married Theodosia SKINNER, possibly in Wiltshire. I would like to find their marriage if I can.

Theodosia died in 1830, and in her will, she mentions the following beneficiaries:

daughter Catherine FAZAKERLEY (husband's name not known)
daughter Mary Susan FROME (born ca 1777)
daughter Theodosia FROME
daughter Dorothy FROME (born ca 1771)
daughter Jane YOUNG (born ca 1782) (husband Captain John YOUNG)
daughter Eliza Harriet CHURCHILL (born ca 1784) (husband Rev Benjamin CHURCHILL)

She mentions (by name) grandchildren:
Edward FROME
Theodosia FROME
Emily FROME
Georgina FROME
John FAZAKERLEY
Harriet WILKINSON

Can anyone help me to identify when and where Catherine FROME married?

Also, can anyone identify the parents of Edward, Theodosia, Emily and Georgina FROME?  I am pretty sure that Theodosia and Emily were living together in St Peter Port Guernsey in 1841; Theodosia was 40 and Emily was 35. They were not born on the Island.  So that may give a clue as to when they were baptised - some time around 1801 to 1806.

It would also be helpful to find the maiden name of Harriet WILKINSON, but this a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack as I don't know how old she was in 1830.

Any help would be very gratefully received.

Thanks

Philip Candy

Hi

I wonder why , on the 1841 census, Theodossia and Emily do not have "E" (for England?) in the POB section? Were they born overseas somewhere?

I have found a Georgana Frome unm, 46 Clergyman's daughter born Gibraltar on the 1851 census. So b c 1805

also on 1851 there is an Edward C Frome, captain Royal engineers, 49 (1802) also born Gibraltar, In 1881 he is a general Royal Engineers aged 79 b Spain.

What do you think?

Well that's a great start. I obviously misread Theodosia's maiden name in the Will.

Thanks so much for a very helpful entry.

Kind regards

Phil

This is really interesting. I had found a Georgina Frome in St Andrew Plymouth in 1841, and that has Gibraltar next to it as well.

Edward Charles FROME was a Surveyor-General in South Australia's early history. According to his online biography, his father was Rev J T Frome and "orphaned early in his life," which would explain why the parents aren't mentioned in Theodosia's will.

This looks like a promising lead.

Thanks so much.

Best wishes

Philip

Another snippet: according to the online directory of Church of England Clergy, Reverend John Thomas FROME was ordained in 1795 and only had a short period as a minister, so he could easily have been born around 1768 and died young.

Hi Phil

I have just spotted Georgina in 1841 and noted the POB as Gibraltar.

there is a death for Theodosia in 1851 in Hampshire .... wonder if she is yours and what the death cert may reveal?

If Edward's dad was Rev. JT Frome ...that would link in nicely with Georgana Frome in 1851 being a clergyman's daughter.

Edward C Frome(49, 1802) had two younger daughters born in South Australia ..

In 1851:
Dora 3 and Eleanor 2 = S Australia
Emily 16 and Marion 15 = Kent

seems to be a big gap in between the children's births

His wife ,Jane , is 37 , b Trewhitt House, Northumberland...I wonder if she is his 2nd wife , which would account for the gap in births.

I found the following information on a site at Cambridge University, so it lends considerable weight to the theory that these are sisters of General Edward Charles Frome. It also provides a marriage to look for: John Thomas FROME to Jane BAYNES.

Kind regards

Philip

General Edward Charles Frome (1802-1890) was Lieutenant Governor of Guernsey, 1869-1874. Frome's mother, Jane, was the daughter of General Alexander Baynes (d. 1804). Captain George Macleod Baynes (d. 1874), R.A., who features in the collection, was presumably a relative of General Frome.

This is turning into a really exotic family, isn't it?

I wonder how the Wilkinson bit fits in?

Thanks so much for looking in the Indian records - very interesting dimension to the search.

Yes they certainly were everywhere Phil. Very interesting family. Wonder where these marriages took place.

No help with marriage but Jane was mentioned in her fathers Will so may help with her family - certainly looks like George in Guernsey is probably Jane's Brother.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/03q3/

It appears John T and Jane died of Plague in Gibraltar in 1804

Now following this John Thomas mentioned in East India Records (this chap is the only son of Edward Charles and Jane Light)

Hi Deb

This is really clever, and it certainly fits with the dates for the other family members named in Theodosia's will.

I wonder where Catherine married - was it in Hampshire or in Wiltshire?

In any  case, I am getting a great overview of the family now.

Many thanks for all this help.

Kind regards

Philip

Hi Philip

Hopefully her will , will lead us to her son, John and his family. We may even get clues as to her husband's family.  :)

I am having a problem trying to figure out Harriet Wilkinson. If she is the daughter of Miss Frome and Henry Wilkinson who married in 1811, India then I have found a Harriet semima Alexander b c 1819 in India ...her husband is a Lieutenant in The Bengal Army. They have a child born in India aged 5....(1851 census)

I have also found a Harriet Lucker aged 40, b Bombay India who is the widow of rev. J Lucker, chaplain of East India Company. she is with her widowed sister Sophy? Stewart (b Calcutta) who is the widow of Capt Stewart, H E I company

Cannot find a marriage for them .... but trying to think out of the box here.  ::)

Post by: Philcandy on Friday 27 June 08 16:04 BST (UK)
Many thanks Deb.

All I can say is that Harriet was alive on 29th March 1824 when her grandmother Theodosia made her will, and that she was described as a granddaughter.

This must mean that Miss Frome, if that is her mother, would have been born after 1865 when Theodosia married, and if she married in 1811, aged say 21, then she must have been born before 1790.  However Theodosia's husband, Rev Dr Thomas FROME died in November 1788, so she must have been born between 1765 and 1788 - which of course is plenty of time.

So maybe there was yet another daughter of Thomas and Theodosia FROME - if I can track down their baptisms I could then look for what happened to each one of them.

Kind regards and thanks for 'thinking outside the box.'

I'm glad I found this thread. I'm coming at this from the Wilkinson side. Henry John Wilkinson (son of John Wilkinson and Anna Carleton) married Harriet Frome at Chittledroog near Madras, India on 14 Sep 1811. A captain in 13th Madras NI, Wilkinson died 10 May 1819 at Bellary. He may have been born in St.Meckans Parish Dublin in Jan 1782. Harried died at Exmouth in Devon on 28 Jan 1840. I suspect she was a granddaughter of Thomas and Theodosia Frome.

Harriet and Wilkinson had two sons : (1) the Rev. John Wilkinson (1816-1876) rector of Broughton Gifford. And (2) Henry Wilkinson, born 1819, died 1823.

The Rev. John Wilkinson married Jean Prat at Littleham Parish Church, Devon on 11 Jun 1844. They had two sons : (1) Henry Fazakerley Wilkinson (1845-1888 when he died in Bedlam hospital) and (2) the Rev. John Frome Wilkinson (1850-1935). Henry Fazakerley Wilkinson had two surviving daughters who  both died unmarried in Hertfordshire in the 1940s, whilst the younger son John Frome Wilkinson had two sons and two daughters. I'm researching them at present.

Hope this helps.
