Post by: zakspeed on Thursday 26 June 08 20:32 BST (UK)
Hi

Can anyone tell me where you can find out about inmates in workhouses in the shropshire area.

I think a relative and maybe her child ended up in Shifnal workhouse (spelt Shiffnal then)and I would like to check the records

Regards

Hi  :)

You could try this site:

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?Shifnal/Shifnal.shtml

The 'parent site' http://www.workhouses.org.uk/  is a brilliant resource.

Hi I see I may be a bit late with this reply but....
go to the Shropshire Archives, Castlegates, Shrewsbury. 01743255350. they have a large selection of the records there. My grandparents were Master & Matron at Shifnall from 1903 -1910. My father was born there. The archives had thier records of service, previous employment records, pension stuff, salaries loadsa usefull stuff - for me anyway. Take a digital camera so you can Photo the relevant stuff. If your interested the main building of the workhouse still stands, it has an English Heritage Blue plaque on it now to identify it.
Good luck
