**completed** What would the phrase "by certificate from Roxton" indicate when recorded in the marriage register of another parish? Is that the same as saying the banns were read in that parish (Roxton), indicating residence there of one of the marital parties, or does it mean something completely different?

I'm guessing that it may be that they applied for a Licence (issued in Roxton) as they didn't want to wait for the (3 or 4 weeks) to have the Banns read, then married in another parish.......
I'm sure somone else will be along soon to confirm or dispute this.....

"by certificate" which would be found on a marriage entry in a register office marriage register or in a non-conformist marriage register. It shows that the couple waited 3 weeks between giving notice and getting married.

If the couple lived in different parishes, it could be a certificate proving that banns have been called in the church other than where the wedding is taking place. A clergyman must not solemnise a marriage in the parish where one resides, without a certificate showing that the banns had been published in the parish of the other person.
