Maybe someone can find some information for me! :)
I know a lady who is about to turn 100 years old in August. I am trying to put together a little scrap book for her about her family. (She is already amazed that I found her on the 1911 Census) ;)
This is all I know even though it's not much.
Address in 1911: Con. 6, Lot 17, Sidney Township, Hastings County
Father: George Holden
Birth: September 22nd, 1863 or 1856 (depending on which census your looking at)
Ontario, Canada
Mother: Lavena Holden
Birth: February 29th, 1875
Ontario Canada
Children:
Pearl Holden
Birth: April 27th, 1900
Ontario, Canada
Lester Holden
Birth: February 1906
Ontario, Canada
Florence Holden
August 11th, 1908
Ontario, Canada
In the 1901 Census there name was spelled Houlden. (I believe this is the way it should have been spelled, but as she said, it was forever being changed to Holden)
Apparently, at some time the family moved to the Belleville area. Not sure if they remained there.
Florence married Harold Day (not sure when).

Wow! :o
I just went for a cup of tea and came back to all this.
Thank you so much.
Florence is one of the nicest ladies I know. Truly amazing. She never had children of her own though, but she would have made a wonderful mother. I go to the store for her, when she needs me to, but she still likes to fend for herself, and loves to go out for her bridge games.
When we were talking today about her birthday coming up, she told me not to buy her anything, because as she said, when you get to her age, if you don't have it, it's because you don't want it. ;D However, she does like it when I tell her about researching genealogy, and she couldn't get over the fact that the 1911 Census was online.
I can't wait to put the scrapbook together because I know she will love looking through it.

makes me crazy that there is no sign of Ichabod, in 1881 Mill Point, Hastings East where Lavenia was born,,, just (his brother) Herbert ( of German descent ) who is also a pedlar
-
Hi J.J
Thank you!
I must be doing something wrong though, because I can't find it on the Pedigree Resource files.
Janice
-
Okay found it! :P
About Ichabod... I'm thinking he may have gone by another name as well, because I can't find him anywhere either.
Janice
-
I think I found them in 1881 census.
Mill Point, Hastings East, Ontario
HERBERT GARDNER
ANN GARDNER
AUGUSTA GARDNER
ELLEN GARDNER
AGNES GARDNER
LANA GARDNER
JNO GARDNER
-
ummmphhhhhhhh :P I thought that was his brother.... if it is he, then where is Lavenia, ( or Celesta) born 1875? Is it Lana, then, born 1877?....phooey, I never did get naming a child one thing but calling them another.... ;D J.J.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not sure that is the same fellow, tho, Janice, as the only match is last name & occupation...plus would he use Ichaboid for marriage 1874, then Herbert for 1881, then Ichabod again for 1901?
-
Help, Karen...If the mother is Anna, Annie ( Hannah or Nancy)...
( don't bother with putting father as Ichabod, as spelling is atrocious)
what are the approximate birth dates for:
Herbert M Gardner, Annie Marjorie Gardner, William Clayton Gardner, Hastings....
plus perhaps an Edna & Pearl ( purl?) Gardner, in Victoria...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
nevermind Marjorie & William, I forgot they were on the second page for the 1901...am hoping to find some births BEFORE 1881 so that we can find the right household.....
but perhaps Janice would like to have those births, anyway...
-
AAAAAAarrrggggggghhhhhhhh...16 May 1889,
There's this daughter to an Ichabod & Annie, but would be 6 yrs before they married...
Charles BULL age 21 / parents Joseph & Catharine BULL
married Gussie Gardner age 21, Stirling / parents Ichabod & Annie GARDNER
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~maryc/hast89.htm
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, here is Augusta, born 1869, with husband Charles Bull ...on that second page I was talking about above...so right around the corner from them...COOL!
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census/ViewFrame.jsp?id=17700&highlight=8
and on the 1911 he still calls himself Ichabod, ( and again says he's English & Annie Scottish) but the 1881 family does have an Augusta...Maybe Karen can sort more out tomorrow...I think they may have been missed on the 1881
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/SplitView.jsp?id=140558
-
I see now that there was also a Gideon Gardner Jr. in Sophiasburgh. ( or was HE the jr.?) Unfortunately the 1851 census for Sophiasburg township no longer exists... :-\ J.J.
her grandparents John & mary with siblings in household & 2 further down on page in Sidney, 1901
says they both immigrated in 1852, so did they make the census?
Karen to the rescue! ;D J.J.
Ah, so Augusta would have had that birth mother as well...Makes sense that
having a son named Herbert 1881 would make him go back to using the other
forename to avoid confusion....
I'd forgotten ...Kooran had found him as a widower with his marriage in 1874
hmmmmmmmmmmmm...was she, then, Nancy Ann Stapleton? or is there a new ball of twine to unwind? heehee...
Helloooo, Janice? Wha Sap Neen? ;D J.
Nah, Karen has to be right, as the children are born & she's married as Annie Reid... so we need a marriage for an Elizabeth Stapleton and a John Reid who is scottish...
-
It would be nice to have the parents of Mary Anne ( Mary Hannah) Askew born Juyl 19, 1829/1830 (maybe Yorkshire)...She was married 1851, so that makes it hard to find her on census ::)
-
I'm having a difficult time keeping up with all of you. :o
I think I may have to ask her about her grandfather, to see if she remembers much about him. (especially what name he went by)
Janice
-
Yeah, there seem to be a lot of matchups now for the 1881 Herbert...but the obvious missing one is the one you need to match in there, Celeste/Lavinia...
although it might be the unaccounted for Lana...Every date is off, now, as well, according to the birth dates...
-
I'm trying to do a timeline, to see exactly what is off. (Again I'm getting myself confused). ;D
Janice
-
I'm finally back! ;D
Just wanted to let everyone who helped know that Florence (Houlden) Day wished to say thank you to all of you.
Oh, doesn't she sound like such a fabulous person. How wonderful to have a memory intact at that age...
Goodness knows my threads are already unravelling ;D
So good to hear from you Janice! We miss you! J.J.
-
Thank you J.J. I miss everyone on here as well.
Still alot going on personally, but hope to get back into this soon.
Florence is an amazing lady. She made the decision to go into the home, I believe it was before she turned 101. She didn't actually move in until after her birthday, last year, if I'm remembering correctly.
She does still have an absolutely fantastic memory. The idea for moving into a home, came after she had a fall. She wasn't hurt terribly badly, but enough to let her know that she didn't want to take any chances of someone having to find her like that.
Florence is still one of my favourite people ever, and I truly do love her.
Janice
-
I just wanted to let everyone who had helped me find information on this wonderful lady know, that she passed away on January 14th, 2011 at the age of 102 years.
I will miss her very much.
Rest in Peace Florence xo
Oh Janice...I am so sorry you've lost your "old' dear pal....Florence sounded like a real gem of a person...
I miss hearing from you, and hope you can get back to us soonest!
~~~ Just popped in to the site and loved the image of her. Was that a recent one? Looks darn good for all her years! Big hugs!!! J.J.

Thank you J.J.
The photo wasn't that old. (possibly 5 years or so) She was an extremely independant person.
When they talked about her being involved with the seniors club, she most definately was. She only stopped about one and a half years ago. Truly amazing.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Florence Janice. Thanks for introducing us to this remarkable woman, how lucky for you to be able to call her friend.
Karen

Thank you Karen.
I do feel very lucky for having her in my life.
Janice
-
Huge hugs and thanks to all who helped with this post! I've found so much about my Gardner family through your work on this scrapbook project. What a gift you've given me.
Lorraine
-
You are most welcome. I still think of her often, as she was one of the most generous people I knew. She had no children of her own, but gave generously to charities involving children. I truly believe that she is still giving, as it is because of her that I started this in the first place. You are blessed to have her in your family tree.
Here is the up to date article in the local paper, which would have been approximately 5 months before she died. http://www.durhamregion.com/news-story/3456332-pickering-resident-turns-102/
Good luck with your research.

Hi Janice ...thanks for putting up the url...I looked for the page yesterday and even tried googling some of her info but couldn't find it. (so much for my googling skills yesterday) I was very happy to read it again, as it is so inspirational... Happy New Year, gang!
-
Hi Janice,
I think that Florence was my great aunt. My dad was William Holden son of Lester and Eva. It was very
interesting to read all of these posts. I have always wanted to know more about my father's side of my family.
I just wish that I would have found this site while Florence was still with us l have a lot of questions that she probably could have answered. All of that side of my that I know about have passed away. If anyone out there has any information about the Holden ' or Tompkins families from the Frankfurt area I would love to hear from them .
I believe that my father had 2 sisters, Vera and ?

Hi Janice,
I received your private message. No address? Also it won't let me write you a message??
-
Now you can :D...You can only private message once you have two postings....so fire away...
Welcome to rootschat by the way!
-
Hi JJ,
Thanks. I just have to how to maneuver through it now.
-
Kevin, we share a common ancestor - Celeste Lavinia Gardner 1875-1942, marr. George William Holden, 1853-1915. Lavinia is my great aunt. Their children: Pearl Irene 1900-1984, John William 1904-1904, Lester Arnold 1906-1950, Mary Ethel 1907-1907, Florence 1908-2011, and Marjorie 1914-? would be my 1st cousins 1x removed. I'm happy to share any information with you. Lorraine
-
Hi Lorraine, It's so nice to talk to you. I guess Lavinia would be my Great Grandmother. My Dad was William Holden also, his Mom was Eva Tompkins from Frankford, who married Lester in 1927.
She was married a couple more times after that. But I never met or knew anybody from the Holden side. I believe the family was split up somewhat growing up. I believe that one of my Dad's sisters was married to the Mayor of Frankford. I think Earl Foster was his name.
-
Kevin, the only Foster I have connected to your Holden family so far is Gerald Louis "Jerry" Foster, 1925-1984, who married the daughter of Lester Arnold Holden, 1906-1950. Can't say whether he was ever a mayor of Frankford. Lorraine
-
Hi Lorraine ,
I just talked to my Mom, she told me that Jerry Foster is my uncle. He was married to my dad's sister Vera. It was his other sister Marjorie that was married to the mayor Earl. She can't remember their last name. I was mixed up with last names. Earl was the mayor of Belleville or Trenton she thinks .
Kevin
-
Sorry Kevin, I haven't any information on Marjorie. If you or your mom remember or come upon any facts about your family that you'd like to share, I'm only too happy to include them in my Ancestry tree. This helps us both in our search for family information. Lorraine
