Hi,
Does anyone now the inhabitants of a Faraday Place in Addiewell, West Calder c.1880/90. My great grandfather, William Bell was a foreman in the Shale Oil works and lived in poss. No 3 Faraday Place - they were foremans cottages,
thank you.
Claire

Hi Claire,
You may already have 1901 census but, if not;
William (aged 36, born Livingston) and Mary (aged 30, born Livingston) are living at 3 Faraday Place at the time of the 1901 census with their 8 children - William (9, Livingston), Richard (8, Livingston), Mary (7, Livingston), Thomas (5, West Calder), David (4, West Calder), Charles (2, West Calder), James (2, West Calder) and Martha (1, West Calder).
William is shown as Foreman of Oil Refinery.
William was born to William and Mary and was living at 57, East End in Livingston in 1871. William senior was a labourer at oil works. The 8 month old Mary (Moore) was living with her parents, Richard (a cotton spinner) and Mary at 41, East End.
Is any of this useful or do you have already? I'd be able to do other census checks etc. if you don't already have.
Kenny

Hi Kenny,
thank you soo much for that. I don't have any access to Scottish census - is there any way you could send a copy of that page of the census please I would be sooo grateful - I'm really exicted about this!
many thanks for your trouble,
Claire
-
Hi Kenny,
just to let you know my grandmother was the 13th child born to William and Mary in 1907, so I really do appreciate this especially as I am in Wales,
take care,
Claire
-
Hi Kenny,
thought I'd drop a line to ask if you have any other information (from the previous census) on these families please.
many thanks for your time,
Claire
-
Claire,
As far as I know, Faraday Place is still there at Addiewell, I live nearby, would you like a photo?
James.
-
:D Hi James,
that would be great! A photo would be much appreciated please. That's very kind of you,
many thanks,
Claire :)
-
Claire,
Here is a photo of Faraday Place, I have more. If you send me a PM with an email address I will send them to you, they are all a bit big to post here.
On this quest to Addiewell, I fell down a rabbits hole and met Alice today, I will tell you that story too at the same time. It sure is an interesting world.
James.
-
Hi James,
:Dwoww! that is great! Anything you have would be really good, thank you soo much for taking the time to do this. I do appreciate your time.
many thanks,
Claire
PS are there any Bells in the area do you know?
-
James,
Are these the front or back of the houses,
Claire
-
Claire,
This is the back of the houses, I would guess they all have at least a Quarter Acre here at the back
and at least 3 Quarter Acre at the front.
More info and photos will come by mail.
James.

This may be of interest to some of you, have attached a map of Addiewell Rows, showing all the street names - Livingston Street, Simpson Street, Graham Street, and of course Faraday Place as well as the rest. Nothing left now of course apart from Faraday Place. cheers ... Meg
-
Hi ,
Would Simpson Street be the same as Simpson Rows? I had relatives in Simpson Rows...
Thanks Lynda
-
Hi Cauther Lassie,
This is very interesting indeed :)! thank you for posting this.....it gives a real idea where Faraday Place fitted into the jigsaw here,
thank you so much, not quite where I imagined it to be but nonetheless brilliant to see :D
thanks,
Pip :)

Hello,
I've never heard of Simpson Rows, being the same as Simpson Street, I thought that Simpson Rows were in Uphall, but could be wrong. Simpson Street, named after James Young Simpson, all the Addiewell Streets were named after Inventors/Explorers, Stephenson (steam engine) Humphrey Davy (the Davy Lamp), Livingstone (David Livingstone - who was a great friend of James "Paraffin" Young, who owned the Oil Works), Michael Faraday (Chemist) who in his early years worked with Humphrey Davy - etc....
I'll see what I can find on Simpson Rows........ cheers ... Meg
-
Hello Again,
Simpson Rows, were certainly in Uphall, so not the same as Simpson Street.

Thanks for this Meg. I knew that they were registered in West Lothian, but no so familiar with the lay out. My relatives lived in Simpson Rows and also were oil workers. They were Irish imigrants. It seems that they were very poor and most died at an early age.
Kind regards,
Lynda

Hi Meg :D,
the map of Addiewell village.........can you let me know what publication this has come from please?
....and thank you for the information on the Bells, Mary Bell b. Ireland! I seem to find I have more Irish roots all the time,
many thanks for this,
Claire :)

I think the map of Addiewell is lovely, thank you for putting it on this thread. My grandparents married in the RC church there in 1921.
Am I right in thinking it is Addiewell in 1900? The date is not clear to me.
-
Hello All,
Sorry for not replying I keep forgetting to check the site. The Addiewell map wasn't in a publication - I got it amongst my Dad's things - and it is 1900. The map doesn't show the RC Church as it wasn't built until about 1916 or thereabouts. I've quite a few old photographs of Addiewell and district - my Mum was born in Loganlea, my Dad in West Calder, he was one of the local postmen so as a wee lassie I went on his rounds with him. That was a long time ago - and Addiewell as it was, still existed.
Attaching a clipping showing Young's Addiewell Oil Works at its height, it was some place!!!
cheers ...... Meg
-
Hi Meg :),
thank you so much for sharing this with us. You are right it was some place - much bigger than I had anticipated. You say you have other photographs of Addiewell - could you possibly share some of them with us? I know it may be asking a bit much, thank you for taking the time out to help us here,
many thanks,
Claire :)
-
Thank you so much Meg, it's very good of you to share these things with us.
And if you did put up some photos, I would be forever grateful !!!!!!!!!!
Many thanks.

Hello Claire & Desert Girl,
Glad to help, some of my family were hoarders and there's a mass of old postcards we have between us - though once picture postcards became popular, lots of folks collected them. One of our ancesters was in Domestic Service and worked all over the place, and constantly sent postcards of the areas she worked it back home - we still have them all. Here's some more of Addiewell - I'll post them over several messages ... cheers .. Meg
-
Hello,
Some of my photos are too big to post, I'll try reducing file sizes later on today, but better get on..... This is the school
-
Hi Meg,
thank you so much for these, it is absolutely brilliant!!
Many thanks,
Claire ;D ;D
-
Fantastic!!
Thank you so much.
-
Hi all
Would anyone happen to have an early photo of Faraday Place? I've found one in a West Lothian Courier article from 1967 however when I try to enlarge it, it goes all pixelated and I can't seem to fix it.
Many thanks
Sandy
-
Hello,
There's a photo of Faraday Place on the 1st page of this post.......

Thanks Meg but I was looking for an old one from the early 1900s. Think I have managed to find one now. I will try attaching it in case anyone else is interested.
Cheers
Sandy

Cauther Lassie - Are you a descendant of all the names you have listed at the bottom?
How far does that go back?
I know my grandad (Robb) was born in Addiewell in 1913. Not sure if his parents were originally from there.
