Hi
My husband's Grandfather was Soloman Noah Levin and came to the UK and can be found in the 1901 Wales census. He also married
Phoebe Rebecca Marks in 1896.
I was wondering if his father Jankel Levin and his mother Ita came over with them. Not sure when they arrived but the 1901 census shows another son Harry who was fighting in the Boar war on Furlough in Tredegar staying with Solomon.
Grateful for any help
Thanks

Hi,
Do you know if the family stayed in Tredegar, or if they ventured to London?
If they did, then there are 2 naturalisation possibilities:-
Nationality and Naturalisation: Levin, Solomon, from Russia. Resident in London. Certificate 6,087 issued 28 April 1920.
Nationality and Naturalisation: Levine, Solomon, from Russia. Resident in London. Certificate 24193 issued 7 October 1913.
If one of these is your fellow, then the naturalisation record would tell you about his father and mother.
Cheers,
Darin.

Hello,
As Solomon was born in Russia in about 1873, yet his brother was born in Wales three years later, it would seem that their parents had emigrated to the UK in about 1875.
The very fact that Harry was in the British army also suggests that the family had been in the country for quite some time.
How do you know the names of both of Solomon's and Harry's parents?
How do you know that Solomon was born in Poplou? What is the current name for Poplou?
Presumably, it was your Solomon Noah Levin that remarried in London in 1904 following Phoebe's death in 1902.

Hi
Yes he did go to London- his 1st wife died in a fire and he married Annie Harris in 1904. I know about the names from remaining family
but they know no more. Except the name GDALIA? may have been their name prior to Levin.
Thanks

Hi Justin
Also family hearsay, that Harry wanted to fight in the Boar War and said he was born in Wales.
Don't know name now of Poplou, sorry.
Solomon Noah remarried in 1904, he had 2 young children and we Think another died in the fire with Phoebe.
Thanks

Hello Beryl,
Via this link you can search through the list of known Jewish communities in Lithuania.
http://www.jewishgen.org/LITVAK/shtetls/Lithuania.htm
How tragic that Phoebe died in a fire. Was the event reported in local papers?
Gedalia is a male Hebrew name. Bearers of that name from Lithuania who emigrated to the USA adopteda variety of secular names, e.g. Charles, Daniel, George, Julius, Harry.
There is no connection with the name Levin, which was probably Levinas in Lithuania. This surname is often derived from the Yiddish given name Leib, which was itself a sort of nickname for men named Yehuda.
None of this gets you any closer to finding Jankel/Jacob, I'm afraid.
