Title: 1851 census - Abraham
Post by: sammidav on Sunday 23 January 05 17:11 GMT (UK)
Hi I am looking for information on the Abraham family in Eaton Bray. I am looking for James Abraham born approx 1843 in Eaton Bray. I believe his parents are Robert Abraham (b 1796) and Mary Windsor born in Slapton 1798, but would like some confirmation of this. I would be interested in occupations and any other available information from earlier or later census (1861, 1871 as I am also trying to find out when James moved to Birmingham).
Thanks in advance,
Samantha

Hi Samantha

This will be a bit of a convoluted answer. I don't have the 1851, but have been through the 1861 and 1841. There are quite a few Abraham families in Eaton Bray, all ag labs bar one who was a farmer. If you want details of them all just ask.

James is on the IGI christened 1844 son of Robert and Mary

I found the family of Robert and Mary in 1841, but obviously no James as he wasn't yet born
HO107/005/11/7
Robert Abraham 40 ag lab
Mary Abraham 40
Joseph Abraham 15
George Abraham 15
Mary Ann Abraham 11
Caroline Abraham 7
Emma Abraham 4

There is a burial on the NBI in Eaton Bray on 21 Feb 1845 of Robert Abrams age 49, which might be Robert Abraham. (ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 in 1841 so 40 could be between 40 and 44)

1861
RG9/1009/86A
Western side, Eaton Bray
Jabez Abraham head marr 38 ag lab b Eaton Bray
Maria Abraham wife 38 straw plaiter b Eaton Bray
James Abraham son 16 ag lab b Kensworth Herts
Ann Abraham dau 10 straw plaiter b Eaton Bray
Elizabeth Abraham 4 b Edlesborough Bucks
George Abraham 10 mths b Eaton Bray

Jabez and Maria did not marry until 1850, so I wonder whether James might not have been their son, but rather the son of Robert dec'd and Mary (there is no James, son of Jabez and Maria on the IGI). There were no other James Abraham's of the right age bracket in Eaton Bray in 1861.

James is in Aston in 1871
RG10/3160
Adderley Rd hamlet of Saltley,Aston
James Abraham head marr  28 cartridge inspector, b Heaton Bray Beds
Sarah Abraham wife 29 b Birmingham
James Abraham son 3 b Birmingham
Mary Clark mother widow 73 b Slapton Bucks

I can't see Mary Clark (or Mary Abraham) in Eaton Bray in 1861

I said it was convoluted!

regards

David

Hello - thankyou very much for both useful messages. I am a lot clearer that Robert and Mary are James's parents. It looks like Robert died when James was very young and maybe Mary married again to a Mr Clark but was widowed again very shortly after. i think I have a bit more confidence in starting to work back from here.

It is interesting to know they were both straw plaiters at the time which I have discovered means that they made straw hats - a Bedfordshire speciality!

I have a few extra questions. Is there an address for the 1841 census?
Also for the marriages/burials mentioned is there a Church named?

Thankyou again,
Samantha

Hi Samantha

No addresses in Eaton Bray I'm afraid.

The burial was in the parish church of Eaton Bray, St Mary the Virgin

David

Hello again,

there is a bap on the IGI for James 23/10/1844 s of Robert and Mary. Eaton Bray. Some non conformist also.

It appears that John firstborn was the first to go to Birmingham.

Have you seen the pedigree file for Abraham?
