Hi All,
Trying to track down any info on Duncan Cameron and Anne Munro, m. 21 May 1790 in Urquhart. I've tracked down 3 children on FamilySearch:
Christian b. 25/5/1791, Urquhart and Logie Wester (presumably died young)
Christian b. 3/2/1793, Urquhart and Logie Wester (my ggg-grandmother; my gg-grandfather's (George MacKenzie) mother-in-law)
Andrew b. 16/1/1795, Urquhart and Logie Wester
Christian Cameron married James Urquhart, in Urquhart on 14 July 1814
On notes my grandfather left he's commented that the Cameron line may have come from the Lochaber region.
Also found some children born to a Duncan Cameron and Helen Munro in the 1780's which does make me wonder whether it's the same Duncan and he's remarried a sister (Anne)?
Any info much appreciated.
Cheers

Hi Darryl
hope you dont mind
I had a look at the IGI at the marriages
for Duncan Cameron and Anne Munro
there is only one that is an extracted marriage 1706 Petty Inverness
the others are all submitted entries
so too are the births of the children of Duncan and Anne
there are no extracted entries for the children
you should be cautious of the submitted entries especially when there
are no extracted entries to back them up
do you have any census records for Duncan that may show him with Anne
if not maybe you should ask someone to maybe see if they can find them on the census
then you could confirm they were born in that area
sorry I dont have access to the census's

Thanks Elaine for the cautionary note. I'm confident about everything back to the marriage of James Urquhart and Christian Cameron as it matches with my grandfather's notes, but the leap back to Christian's birth and Duncan was based on the names of James and Christian's children and is more of 1 possible lead rather than something I'm certain about. Was hoping to pick up some additional info that might help me decide about Duncan one way or the other.
Cheers

Hi
Scotlands People have the marriage as Daryl states - 21st May 1790, Urquhart and Logie Wester:
Duncan Cameron in Balnabin was contracted with Anne Munro there and were married
Also it confirms the baptisms of children to this couple in Urquhart:
25 May 1791 - Christian
3 Feb 1793 - Christian
16 Jan 1795 - Andrew
There are two possibilities for Ann Munro* in U and L W:
23 June 1871 d/o Alexander Munro and Elizabeth McCrae
15 December 1775 d/o James Munro and Ann Gordon
and one possible for Duncan Cameron:
17 June 1768 s/o William Cameron and Ann Steuart
Given the names of their children I'm not sure about these but they may be worth following up.
It might be worth doing a wider search for either of these with a mother Christian (probably Ann but sometimes the naming conventions were reversed)

Thanks Ladies
Would either of you mind looking on SP to see if there's a registered death for Christian Cameron >1855? I think I found the household in the 1841 census though some of the children are missing (though perhaps they'd already died), and some of the ages are a bit off (not uncommon). Area is right though I think; should be in the region of Balnabeen.

Children of Christian Cameron and James Urquhart that I've found are (all Urquhart and Logie Wester):
William, c.4/8/1817
Christian, c.28/11/1820
Duncan, c.2/1/1823
John, c.21/4/1826
James, c.19/4/1828
Donald, b. 23/4/1830
Christian (Christina) Urquhart is my gg-grandmother on the MacKenzie side.

Good Morning,
As a detour have you tried an ebook search? The New Statistical Account of Scotland - by Society for the Benefit of the Sons and ... - 1845 - History
ROSS AND CROMARTY. covers a lot of interesting day to day history for the era. I found it useful while searching for info re Rev Gilbert Robertson and his son Rev Harry Robertson as well as their associated families...just didn't find the mother of one of Harry's grandsons allegedly born in the West Indies 1794.
Good luck Abygail

Thanks for the thought Abygail. I've read parts of that online but haven't come across anything of note before.
Thanks Elaine for taking a peek, although none of them look like likely contenders at this stage. Will keep digging!

if yours are anything like mine
Duncan will turn out to be Daniel or Donald ;D

Am hoping that Camerons on the Black Isle wouldn't be too bad. certainly better than MacKenzies and Urquharts in the same region!
-
I've got the gorse out of my pocket and located the death certificate of Christian/Christina Urquhart (nee Cameron) on SP.
d. 19/4/1856. Father: Duncan Cameron, spirit dealer(deceased). Mother: Ann Munro (deceased).
Duncan may possibly have been involved with the distillery that was on the Black Isle at about that time?

Hi Darryl,
Sorry to resurrect this old topic, but I believe it may be relevant to my own family. My g-grandmother Jamesina was a Cameron from the Black Isle. She is a descendant of a Duncan Cameron from Balnabeen, who married Hellen Munro in 1777. I wondered if what you suggested might be true, that the same Duncan Cameron married two Munro sisters. Have you discovered anymore regarding this?
My line goes as follows...
i. Duncan Cameron of Balnabeen m. Hellen Munro on 17 Apr 1777
ii. Ann Cameron b. 19 Jan 1783 - d. 22 Dec 1865 at Knocknafanaig (Unmarried)
iii. Margaret Bisset of Knocknafanaig b. 7 Dec 1812 ("bastard daughter to Evan Bisset in Bogbuie and to Ann Cameron in Wellhouse") m. John Cameron of Newton on 22 Feb 1839
- John Cameron was born in Lochalsh (not a Black Isle Cameron) Abt. 1818 according to census data, but I can't find a death cert for him even though he was still alive when Margaret died on 9 Jan 1895 at Woodside, Ferintosh
iv. John Cameron b. Abt. 1847 at Knocknafanaig m. Anne MacDonald b. 22 Dec 1854, at the Free Church Manse of Urquhart in 10 Jan 1879
v. Jamesina Cameron b. 11 Apr 1896 at Garguston, Killearnan m. Alexander MacDonald on 3 Dec 1920 at Mulbuie Glebe
Do you still think this could be the same Duncan Cameron?
Cheers,
Alasdair

Hi Alasdair
Sorry, I haven't. My dad has done a lot with the family tree in the last few years, but focused on the MacKenzie line. I can check to see if he's done anything with the Cameron line.
Cheers

Hi, may be able to help with some of the details here that Alistairmac21 is missing:
John Cameron married to Margaret Bisset died 1900, age on death cert given as 71, mother maiden name was Martin, but this isn't consistent with the census data.
John and Annie had more children than Jamesina, Donald b1879, John b~1883, Maggie b~1888 and Annie b1893
I hope this helps
Regards
Iain

Hi Iain,
Thank you for your response. I had located John's death since I posted that, but appreciate your assistance nonetheless.

Hi Alasdair,
You're welcome, John was my great grandfather, but with so many named John Cameron, identifying the correct one can be difficult!
