Title: Tracing William Lilley
Post by: Nica19 on Wednesday 09 July 08 18:01 BST (UK)
Hi,
I am trying to trace the family of my G/grandfather, William Lilley, born in Islington, Middlesex in 1836.  Got to be honest, that is all I know about his origins.
He moved from there to Scarborough, where he married Martha Tann, a Fisherman's widow who had two boys, George and Robert.  They married in 1865 and had William   and then moved to Middlesbrough, where they had three daughters, Martha, Ellen and Emily and my grandfather, Thomas.
Robert, moved to Middlesbrough with the family and I have found both Robert and George Tann on various census where they are noted to be Seamen.
Any information would be gratefully received

Do you not have any groom's father from the 1865 marriage cert?
Who witnessed it?

Have you William lilley on census prior to 1871?

No, the earliest I have William on Census is 1881, when my grandfather was four and they were living in Middlesbrough.  No I have not sent for the wedding certificate of William and Martha, that is something I will have to do.

Is the 1871 referring to William's own family in Middlesbrough?  If it is I already have traced that information.   I am trying to find him before then and I think I am going to need his wedding certificate to get the names of his parents and Martha's. I have found out her name prior to marrying the first time was White. Martha (William's) wife was born in Scarborough  and she married James Tann in the second quarter of 1857.

Sorry Pauline, got mixed up.  That was the first indication I had of him. Then I found his marriage etc, and managed to get other details re the son, William born in Scarborough and the other four born in Middlesbrough. My mistake,I am  sorry xx
