Title: PLEASE ... new members ... read this !
Post by: Lydart on Thursday 10 July 08 09:01 BST (UK)
Its wonderful that we are having new members join us every day, but please, PLEASE ... if you are new, it would help everyone if you put up your place of residence in your profile ... it doesn't have to be specific, but if you just put 'London' or 'Queensland, Australia' ... it would help the old hands to offer you more help.   I'm often tempted to suggest to someone they visit a certain record office, for e.g.  ... then realise they could be ten thousand miles away !

Hi Lydart

I think its up to the individual person if they want to give their location. In this day and age its probably best not to put the area that you are living in, as one person on another thread says its easy to tack people down, and as this is a free site, you never know who is looking at your profile ???

Hi Patrish

Buts its just as easy to ask them what county and area they are looking for, than to give out to much personel info on their profile.

Snap Patrish!   I recommended a website to someone who was researching an area only to find, in their reply, that they lived there! I too have suggested visits, to areas in the UK,  to people living on the other side of the world.  ::)

I too am with Lydart on this.

What's wrong with putting UK,USA,Canada,Australia or NZ etc.

Surely that doesn't give too much away for those who wish not to say where they actually live.

I often help someone and suggest a phone call or trip to a record office, and then feel really silly when they reply  "I live in Australia".

That fact on their profile would have saved embarrasment and time.

Hi Carol

But what's the point in putting the name of the country that they live in, when the person might be asking about a different country. To save embarrasment its just as easy to ask what county or country they asking about if they havnt put it in their request.

I haven't put my location in, mostly because of a deep seated need to remain anonymous. But I then talk very openly, on various threads about where I live. So it's a bit of a nonsense isn't it. Maybe I'll update my profile.

Jen

Done!

Apart from location I'd like people to put Male or Female in their profile.  Mentioning no names I was in correspondence ( for quite sometime) with someone I was thought was male and they turned out to be female!

I think you have missed the point Ricky.  When writing a reply which recommends a visit to a record office or similar, most of us check the person's profile to make sure that they live within a feasible distance.  Thus to avoid the embarrassment of a stupid reply, we would like to know where they live say within a hundred miles.  Country and County would be ideal.

I agree on giving a gender, for reasons given above. Giving info on which country you are, can help with look ups and requests, and the amount of area info that maybe needed, to help.  Although personally I think info on age is unimportant.

On behalf of the RootsChat Moderating team, may I say this?

The views expressed here are personal ones and do not indicate any "official" stance by RootsChat itself.  There are options in the profile to indicate as much - and as little - as the member wishes.  It is up to the individual member to choose which parts they wish to fill in.

Whatever they choose to do, we will welcome them and try to help in best spirit of RootsChat.   :)

Oh yes, Nell, no compulsion AT ALL ... but it does help !

I'm sometimes surprised at the personal info that people DO give ...

I kind of see both points of view

(Yes I know I'm sitting on the fence again)  ;D

I see why people don't give personal details and I feel a bit like that myself especially after having had my card cloned twice,

on the other hand a country helps especially when I tell someone to go to the local record office and they then tell me they are 10,000 miles away.  Ok your choice not to enter your country but then don't get snotty with me if I make that suggestion and you are 10,000 miles away and I can't even tell whether you are a gent or a lady let alone which continent you live on!  ::) ::) ::)

My point entirely Kerry  ;D ;D ;D

I might say to someone that such and such can be viewed at the LMA..and then they tell me they don't even know where London is never mind the LMA.....boy you feel really stupid.  :-[

David( behindthefrogs) Thanks for putting my point across so eloquently, although I must say I ain't even looking for a county..but a country would be a great help.

:o Now you're scaring me! I have my home town on my profile so that people can ask me for help in that area if they want, but now I'm worried about people being able to trace me, or clone me (well, use my details but you know what I mean  ;D)
I'm the most private persion I know, so maybe I should change my profile.

It is very helpful though, if there is a general area on people's profiles.

I am sure due to my experiences at the moment I am being a little paranoid and oversensitive so I have simply put England.  I think most people on here who are regular know where I come from anyway because of where my interests lie and as we get to know other rootschatters that does become obvious sometimes.  But a country is a good starting point if you don't know someone.

My friend Gadget laughs at me sometimes because I'm excellent at thinking someone is female who is actually male and vice versa so when it comes to where people live I have no hope  ;D ;D ::) ::) and most of the time I don't know where somewhere is anyway  ;D

Is it just on the Rootschat boards that you have this gender recognition problem,or face to face with people too?

Sorry couldn't resist that  ;D ;D ;D

Kerry, ignore that cruel barb! I often don't know where/who I am when I wake up in the morning, let alone knowing whether people on here are male or female. I have just altered my profile and had done it and saved it before realising that I claim to live in a county which technically hasn't existed for many years! Not changing it again, so there!

You've reminded me of my most embarrassing moment.  :-[

I was in a house the day of a funeral, asking people what they wanted, tea or coffee, and I said to the person with me "The gentleman over there will have tea and this gentleman will have coffee."  I had no suspicions at all, until she mouthed frantically at me "They're both women."

Well, how was I to know? They were wearing three piece suits and ties, and.. well, I'd probably better not say anymore, I can feel myself getting all hot and bothered.  :-[

LOL  ;D ;D ;D

What doesn't help sometimes is when a male has a female picture for an avatar and vice versa, that really confuses me - but then according to that I'm a hellebore  ::) ::) ;D ;D

I dont think I have missed the point, all I is saying that if your not sure of the area that a person wants the lookup done, be it county or country or the universe, is to ask. That way people stay safe on line. Me I dont mind showing where I live, but other people might feel vunerable about giving a way to much info on here or any other website.

Order, ORDEEERRRRRRRR ... !!!!!

OK ... point taken; we all confuse male and female on here ... when someone calls themselves some name like, lets say  ... PLOP ... then what the h**l gender is that ?

And when they further confuse issues by having a male avatar, or a chimp, what gender is THAT ??

I STILL think that in a profile, its useful to have at the very least, the country where members are !

(Apologies to the member called PLOP, by the way !)

Ladies and gentlemen,

To get back on topic (otherwise I'll HAVE to move this to TOT) you are all entitled to an opinion and to express those opinions.  But it is for individuals to choose what they do, however eloquent and persuasive the arguments may be.  This subject has been discussed several times before.  The fact that it has been raised again indicates how everyone is different in the choices that they make.

It also proves the adage: you can't please all the people all of the time........

Discussion closed (no doubt until the next time............. ;D )
