Title: Robert Lockett & Ellen Draper
Post by: bodger on Thursday 10 July 08 17:50 BST (UK)
I have the above couple marrying, Dec. 1863 Salford.

In the 1871 cen. Salford,  they are shown with his in laws, Joseph & Elizabeth Huddart,.

In the 1861 cen. Joseph & Elizabeth are show with two sets of children, Ellen,b.1843, Elizabeth,b.1842, Draper,
and three Huddart children, from this i assume that both Joseph & Elizabeth had previous marriages ?, or she had two children on her own

Elizabeth is show has being born 1811, Kirkdale, Lancs ?.

I have looked for the Drapers in the 1851 cen, but can find no matches ?,
There is a possible marriage of John Draper & Elizabeth Phillipson, 1841 Lancs. BMD.?, but again i cannot match them in the 1851 cen.
Can anyone please find the Drapers in 1851?
                     Thank You Bodger

What was the name of Ellen Drapers father on her marriage certificate?

What was Ellen and Elizabeth's birthplace

If Ellen was b around 1843, a copy of her birth cert will show Elizabeth's maiden name

Alternatively - a copy of the Huddart/Draper marriage cert will shows Elizabeth's previous surname via her fathers name

If you check the 1851 for Joseph Huddart you will see he is married to a Mary A and all the Huddart children on the 1861 are from his first marriage.

Any re-marriage must have been between 1851-1861

If you check freebmd for a death for Mary A Huddart it will narrow the remarriage year down further

ELLEN DRAPER  Christening:  26 SEP 1843   Saint Peter, Liverpool
Father:  JAMES DRAPER    Mother:  ELIZABETH

The only Joseph Huddart marriage to an Elizabeth on Lancs BMD was 1856 to Elizabeth Parr

If you check the 1861 - there is no other Joseph & Elizabeth Huddart except yours

Thank you for the replies,
hol, i think you are correct, on the original it is Draper, mis transcription ?
Carole W, it gets more interesting, on Lancs. BMD 1839, there is a Joseph Huddart marrying Mary A Parr, if this is the same Joseph marrying Elizabeth Parr in 1856, i wonder if he married his wifes unmarried sister, or her brothers wife, or just a coincidence ?, i know it can be resolved with certs, but they are not directly in line, and i am still saving for the more direct ones.    Thank You Both Again, Bodger

Hi Bodger,

I have a copy of Ellen Draper's marriage cert, her father's name is John Draper, date of marriage 20th of December 1863 at St Simon's, Salford, age 21, residence Broughton Road.
Husband: Robert Lockett (turner), age 21, residence looks like Hodgson Street, father William (engineer).
Witnesses John Rafter and Martha Wild - I believe the two later married.

Robert is my husband's gggrandad.
I noticed on another of your posts you were looking for Martha, Robert John and Charles Lockett - parents William Henry and Elizabeth. Did you manage to find out what Martha's mother's surname was?

I do have a birth cert for Robert John Lockit 21/10/1843, Catherine Court, Manchester - father William Lockit and mother Betsy Lockit - Betsy was illiterate which probably explains the spelling of Lockett.

Regards
Brisvegas

If i am reading the above correctly:-
James Draper, married an Elizabeth, and had Ellen, b 1842, James dies ?

Lancs. BMD, 1839, Joseph Huddart, marries, Mary Ann Parr

 1851 cen. Joseph Huddart & Mary A  (Parr ?) & children,
Mary A, dies?

In 1861 cen Joseph & Elizabeth  are together with their respective children

1971 cen, Ellen, b.1842 & Robert Lockett,b.1844, are living with in laws, Joseph & Elizabeth Huddart.

Lancs BMD, 1856, a Joseph Huddard marries Elizabeth Parr, could she be Elizabeth Draper, marrying under her maiden name ?
Any thoughts please,  Bodger

Hi Bodger and all,

how about this scenario:

Elizabeth Phillipson marries John Draper 1841 / free BMD Liverpool Qtr4, vol20, pg237
IGI ref marriage takes place on 11/10/1841 @ St.Nicholas' Liverpool

1841 census Class: HO107; Piece 561
Elizabeth (1817) and John Draper (1817) living at St Andrews Street
with baby Ann (1 month)
Suggests they weren't wholly truthful on census night.

1851 census as previously discussed Elizabeth is a widow with
daughters Elizabeth and Ellen

Hi.  I've just begun a root search, and it seems that John Robert Lockett (Robert John?) and Ellen Lockett are my great great grandparents.  Amelia and William Finch Faulkner are  my great grandparents, and their son, who was born to Amelia's sister but adopted by them, was my mother's father.  So, biologically, he was a Cochran, but legally, a Faulkner.  They apparently (Cochran and Faulkner families)lived in the same building.  His name was William Cochran Faulkner.  He was born on March 7, 1912 and died in August of 1968 from liver cancer in Florida.

I live in Delaware, NJ, USA, but spent most of my life in New Jersey.

Since I'm new at this, I'm not sure how to proceed.  Any suggestions?

Thank you Debra.  The family oral history is that they came here for a few years and my grandfather was born here and they went back to England, and then returned to the US for good.  I have no idea if this is the truth.  The story also went that Ethel got sick after the birth of my grandfather, and they thought she was going to die, so Amelia, who didn't have any children (couldn't for some reason) took William.  By the time Ethel recovered, he wouldn't go back to Ethel, and apparently, Ethel had several children, so Ethel let Amelia and William Finch Faulkner adopt him.  That's how his name is William Cochran Faulkner. (that's how they spelled Cochran here).  They all lived in a two family house and he grew up with 2 sets of parents.  I appreciate all of this information--I can't tell you how grateful I am.
