Hello,Can you do a Look-Up for me please?
The name is William Smith and he was Station Master in the early 1800's probably near Ullingswick or the Herefordshire area.I'm sorry,i don't have many more details about him.Thank you...
-
Sorry, awful lot of Smiths but not him.
-
Suttontrust - what a fine offer. I have someone whose entry into the railways I can pinpoint almost exactly - Tom or Thomas Southern, railway servant, 1901, possibly at Symond's Yat Station in the Forest of Dean, GKS. [1901 census, a railway servant - 1900 marriage a labourer].
Please see what you can do.
-
Hi suttontrust
Thanks for the offer - wonder if it goes as late at the 1940's?
My Uncle, James Bateman [born 1902]worked as a engine driver at Hitchen Herts - he took me one the footplate about 1950 - just after he was invalided out of the railways - it would be nice to have any details you had of him. I think he was on the railways for quite some time.
Cheers
Keith

Hiya Suttontrust I would be grateful if you could find any of the following for me
Charles Henry Bowkett - b 1867 - railway inspector
Alfred Smith Harris - b 1852 - railway worker
Charles Bowkett - b 1826 - engine tender
George Bowkett - b 1906 - railway electrician
Charles Henry and George Bowkett lived in Wolverhampton as did Charles although he was born in Ledbury, Worcs.
Alfred lived in Droitwich
Your offer is much appreciated

Thanks anyway Suttontrust...much appreciated..
-
Sad to report that I can't find Tom Southern, James Bateman, the Bowketts or Alfred Harris. I'm beginning to regret this offer. The database reckons to contain 62,000 names from all over the world, but it's limited, I think, to people who were mentioned in the staff magazines and some other records. I don't mind doing look-ups but clearly the chances of finding anyone are fairly slim.
-
OK Suttontrust, thanks for trying.
-
Hi suttontrust,
I know that the chances are slim, but could you look up a Walter Knee for me?
I have him on the 1901 census living in Ashill, Somerset working as a Station Master (at Brautnich?).
If you can't find him don't worry, but would be interested in anything you can find!
Thanks for the offer!
Rebecca
-
Hi suttontrust

Hi
If you're not TOO inundated, can you see if there are any Letley's in there? If it's too big an exercise, don't worry about it!!!
Thanks
Kind regards
English Jen.
-
Sorry, Jen, no Letleys at all.
-
Hi Suttontrust
Many thanks for looking for me.
Jen.

Hi Suttontrust, could you please look up Robert Folks b, 1829 in Wolverhampton, d. 1879 in Birmingham. In the 1871 census he was a railway policeman in Brum. Just before that I believe he was in Wolverhampton and in Shropshire around 1861. Many thanks. Greg
-
thanks for looking.
Regards,
kiwi.
-
Greg, one of these days I'll find one, but there's no one by the name of Folks. Sorry.
-
Hi Suttontrust,
Thanks for the offer.
Please could you have a look for William Hill, a railway engine driver, born Lowton, Lancashire in ~1833. In 1871 he was living at 43 Golborne Street, St Paul's, Warrington, Lancashire. By 1881 his son Joseph E Hill born ~1865 is also on the railways and they are living at 18 Nicholson St, Warrington. In 1891 they are still living in St Paul's, Warrington. William's other sons were Albert E born 1867, Arthur William born 1872 and Jasper Frederick born 1874.
I know my grandfather used to wave to train drivers (etc.) in Warrington in the 1920s and 1930s who were supposed to be relations.
Many thanks,
Geoff.
-
Cheers anyway Suttontrust.
Greg
-
Geoff of Devon - no Hills in Warrington, I'm afraid.
-
Thanks for trying! Geoff.
-
Hi Suttontrust,
Can you see if you have info on John Partridge, who was my great grandfather, & on 1891 census is described as a 'Permenant Way Inspector'. He was born around 1825 in Sharnbrook. Beds, but he was living in Peterborough in 1891 & that census has his age as 60 - I think it was really 66. This ties into his recorded death at age 75 in 1900.
thanks & regards John Partridge
-
Hello,
Thanks for the great offer.
Is there, by chance, a George Dedross in there for the LNER Leeds & Doncaster from approx. 1914-59?
Best wishes,
Nigel
-
Sorry, the name doesn't appear.
-
Thank you for trying
Nigel

Hi Suttontrust
If you aren't too inundated would you mind looking for the name VERRIER. I have a few who worked on the railways.
Many thanks
-
My Grandfather was engine driver in GWR. He ended up driving expresses to West Country out of Paddington until 1940. I did try and see if personnel records were still in existence. You would not believe how difficult it was to find where the GWR records are, despite a visit to Didcot. Apparently, they are at PRO Kew, having been originally at Paddington. I have not tested this information.
Just out of interest, even in the 1930's, it was quite usual for Royalty and aristocracy to walk up to the engine driver and thank him for a safe journey.

To Smokey and Casalguidi - sorry, can't find them.
-
Hi suttontrust
Thanks anyway
Smokey

Thanks for looking - it is much appreciated

Suttontrust
Thanks for your very kind offer - may I join the queue?
Any sightings of GREENEs would be much appreciated - I know that some, living in the Middlesex area, were connected with the railway.
Also, if you have time, would you be kind enough to check for a John MADAGAN who was the Superintendent of the South-Western railway staion at Windsor around 1856?
Many thanks
Lyn S

Hi Suttontrust,
Don't know whether you would like to go for a success.
My Grandfather, George Edward Griffiths (1881 - 1962) was engine stoker in GWR (1901 Census) and was certainly express driver by 1930's.
Thanking you in advance.
Roger

Hi Suttontrust
If the offer's still open:
I have an EDWIN RUSSELL born 1860 who worked for the railways.
1881 (aged 21) Railway Porter (living in St George in East, London)
1901 (aged 41) Railway Signalman (living in Bromley, Poplar, London)
Rumoured to have been Stationmaster at Tiptree, Essex at one point - (presumably after 1907 as he was still living in Poplar then). Not sure if this was mainline or the Kelvedon/Tollesbury Crab & Winkle line light railway.
I have a photo of him with the letters 'GER' on his cap so am assuming he worked for Great Eastern Railway since started work.
Don't have anything further but hope the above helps track him down.
Thanks in advance

Sorry for the delay in replying. There are no Verriers. Several Greenes but none in Middlesex. No Madagans. Lots of Griffiths but not George Edward. And no Pittens. Given my lack of success it's better that I withdraw my offer.
-
Thanks for looking Suttontrust.
-
Many thanks for looking - I'm very grateful for the trouble you have gone to.
Best wishes
