Hi Tomba

You don't give dates, etc. but I'll check the MIs.

Re your more general question of research, it might be worth you contacting the Dumfries and Galloway FHS:

http://www.dgfhs.org.uk/

 the Ewart Library:

http://www.culturalprofiles.net/scotland/units/3331.html

or the Kirkcudbright Museum:

From an extract of entries in the Old parochial Registers of Births Deaths and Marriages in the parish of Crossmichael, in the County of Kirkcudbright Scotland, we find that James McGuffog was baptised on the 5th June 1803, lawful son of Jas McGuffog and Margt Riddick in Dunjarg
In the 1841 Census we find that James aged 35 a farmer is living at Nethertown, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland with his wife Ann aged 30, Alexander McGuffog aged 5 years, Margaret aged 3 years and Ann aged 1 year, along with three servants Robert Rae, Jean McKinnel, Margaret Clune, and Ann Beattie.
In the 1851 Census James aged 47 and his wife Ann aged 45 are living at Merkle Cocklick, Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, James is described as a labour of 260 acres employing 5 labourers.
Along with Alexander a son aged 15 years, born Kirkpatrick Durham. Margaret a daughter aged 13 years, born Lockrutton.  Ann a daughter aged 11 years, born Kirkpatrick Durham. Mary a daughter aged 9 years, born Kirkpatrick Durham. James a son aged 5 years, born Kirkpatrick Durham. Agnes a daughter aged 4 years, born Kirkpatrick Durham. John a son aged 2 years, born Kirkpatrick Durham. Helen Broadfoot a visitor and scholar, aged 11 years, William Broadfoot a visitor and scholar, aged 9 years, along with Robert Brown aged 18 a farm servant, Maryanne? Aged 26 years a house servant, and Jannet? Aged 30 years a dairy maid
In the 1861 Census the family name is given as “McGuffey” James a Farmer living at Merkle Cocklick, Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland, aged 68 along with his wife Annie aged 55, his sons, James aged 15, James aged 13, John aged 11, Robert aged 8 and daughter  Mary aged 19. The James McGuffey age 13 that is described as a daughter I am guessing is Agnes. Along with the family is 4 servants, Agness Mallar a dairy maid, James McGemes a ploughman, Jannet McQueen a servant and Jessie Stewart a domestic servant.
In the 1871 Census The family name is still “McGuffey” James is of Cairnholly Farm, Kirkmabreck, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. A farmer aged 66 years, his wife Anne a farmers wife, Mary his daughter, Anne Thomson his grand daughter and scholar aged 11,  Mary Baxter also described as his granddaughter, aged13 working as a servant, and George Dow, a farm servant.

This one here is confusing as I am not sure if where the Mary Baxter (Grandaughter) fits in or if it’s a mistake it seems to be a mistake

In the 1881 Census, The family is found here under the name “McGuppog” James is listed as living at the dwelling Dirdow in the parish of Girthon, Kirkcubright, Scotland. Aged 77, a widow and retired farmer. His birthplace is given as Crossmichael Kirkcudbright Scotland.
Also at the dwelling is Lilly McGuffog a grand daughter aged 3 born Limrick Ireland. Margaret McGuffog a daughter married aged 27 born Limrick Ireland described as a visitor. Mary McGuffog aged 35 and described as an unmarried daughter born Kirkpatrick Durham, Kirkcudbright, Scotland. Annie Thomson an unmarried Grand daughter aged 20 and a dressmaker born Tongland, Kirkcudbright Scotland. Herbert T Thomson a grandson and scholar aged 14 born Flintshire, and Robert E Thomson a grandson and apprentice engineer aged 14 born Flintshire.

This one here is also confusing I’m not sure who the Lilly McGuffog (granddaughter ) is nor the Margaret McGuffog both born Limrick Ireland?

I'm not sure what other information you're looking for. I see that your earliest is 1729. The Kirkpatrick Durham registers start at 1693/4 with some gaps. There are some possible baptisms for this William between 1730-1735 in Girthon, Anworth and Dumfries.

There are quite a few Wills on the Scotlands People website using all the variations of the name - not all will be yours and there residence is varied.

To go further than this you will certainly need some local and/or Edinburgh research. I think the contacts that I listed on my first message might be the way forward.

I have checked out the William's on the site Scotland's People, I haven't been able to fit them in, and the wills I have found in relation to the people I have don't give me any indication.

I have little info on the other children of William and Agnes Hunter. Every where I go now seems to hit brick walls.

I would also like to know about their life. Farmer at Nethertown, did he own land etc. where can I go to find out these things, Midpark is that a village of property??  Nether Ironmonnoch,  Nether Errie, Parton,  that sort of stuff
I can not find any record of James marriage to janet Welsh or about her. Margaret Riddick I guess any thing that can give me some more info in relation to this family I can not find any thing about Walter Hunter of Corsock. I haven't had a chance to check out the other websites you sent me but I will do that over the next few days. As you said I thing my only options here are to get a researcher of better still visit scotland my self I rather like that idea. ::)

Tomba.

I've hesitated about adding this information to your posting as the information there is very complicated.  But you have asked for information about the McGuffog family.

I was reading the kirk sessions for Parton/Corsock and was particularly interested in my 3 g grandmother's own widowed mother Margaret Shaw.  From 1839 on wards Margaret falls upon very hard times and has to make an application to the parish for poor support.  She is given a paltry amount to exist on.  However, in April 1845 there is an entry in the poor relief records that Margaret is given board to pay to Mr /Wm  Guffog.  This payment is for about a month's period than the information goes back to the basics about her fortnightly allowance.

I wonder if this is the McGuffog family?  By 1851 she is living with her granddaughter and new family in Parton.

Hope this is more of a help than a hindrance.

Tomba, thanks for sharing your wealth of information. John McGuffog married Janet McClune 1765 Parton caught my eye because of my own McClune, McMurrie, Shaw connections. Here is another reference: Testament of John McMurrie given in Airds 24 February 1680.  John McMurrie and Euphin? Elspeth? (looks like Eugte in secretary hand) Fairness or Fairend, had a daughter, Janet, spouse to John McGuffock in Bar(l)greddan. One son, Geog (sic) McGuffock also in Bar(l)greddan. It appears that Airds at that time was owned by "laird John McClellan" in Bankend, who signed the Testament. It is very difficult to decipher and contains an inventory of the property leased? and John McMurrie's bequests to his spouse, daughter, and John McGuffock. Several other names of people in Rerrick, Auchencairn, Barlocco, Abay, and Edinghame are also mentioned. If nothing else, this provides a timeframe ::)

These are probably not the same McGuffog family, but any information would be gratefully received.   The earliest I know of is David McGuffog, married to a Margaret Mains, in Craigs, Balmaclellan.   In 1760 there was a daughter, Sarah, later known as Sarah Maria, followed by a Jane and a Katrine (born 1766).

By the 1780s all three daughters are in Jamaica, where Jane marries (1786) a John Rutherford, a Kingston merchant who by 1805 is in Marylebone in London.  Katherine/Katrine in 1793 marries (from Jamaica)  William Duff, a merchant in Nicholas Lane, London but living later in Shoreditch.   Duff and Rutherford were close - the Duffs named a son John Rutherford Duff.  Sarah in Jamaica had married someone called Leigh whom I cannot trace.   In 1796, recorded as Sarah Maria Leigh, a widow, she remarries a John Forsyth, described as "planter," who seems to have been active in the parish of St Mary, though she seems to have owned the plantation called Leighfield in St George, which seems to have been their home.   Forsyth is dead by 1810, but Sarah can still be traced at Leighfield until the mid 1830s.

All three women are remembered in the will of James McGuffog, a very successful draper in  Stamford, Lincolnshire, who dies in 1828.   Robert Owen had once been his apprentice.   His brother, John, also in Stamford, describing himself as "gentleman" died in 1825.   There is no mention of kinship, yet both James and John McGuffog are clearly also from Balmaclellan, which is mentioned in both their wills

It seems likely that David McGuffog was a tenant in Craigs, which seems to have been in the hands of a Gordon family in the 1760s.   There doesn't seem to be any likely link to Jamaica to throw light on the story.

A small piece of information in respect of  your James McGuffog,( draper in  Stamford ).
There is a Memorial inside Balmaclellan church that reads,

"To the memory of James McGuffog esquire late of Stamford in the county
of Lincoln who died in 1829 having bequeathed to the minister and elders
of Balmaclellan for the time being the sum of £300 to be by them appropriated
for the benefit of the poor of the parish".

Many thanks - this is in his will, I think, though it's nice to know they were grateful.  So far I still can't find a reliable birth record for him or his brother,  and certainly not in Balmaclellan.   I don't know how old he was at his death, but his will, written a bit before it, is formidably detailed.  He was clearly in full possession of his faculties and then some.
