Post by: NickT on Wednesday 16 July 08 16:39 BST (UK)
During my last 5 years of research I have obtained copies of 40 Cheshire Wills and Admons from Cheshire Records Office.  In keeping with the spirit of Rootschat I am prepared to share details of the contents of these documents. We've got Cheshire wills too, for both my family and my husband's.  I like the ease with which you can search the Cheshire wills too.  If only other counties had put the same kind of info on line.

Some of my ancestors were farmers or butchers, so I suppose might have been expected to have wills, but my husband's family were all hatters.  I wonder if in Cheshire it was the "done" thing to make a will even if you were poor, just to stop the squabbling between the children.  One of my Cheshire wills, actually lists all the children of the family and their respective spouses.  I already had that information, gleaned from censuses but it was good to have it verified.

Yes, You are right.  I am very fortunate and also lucky that the Records have been preserved so well in Cheshire.  The people at the Records Office are great and always very helpful.

I still have about 25 wills to order and I'm hopeful that my 75% success rate of matching them to my tree continues.

Sharing the information this way may also put me in touch with some otherwise unknown relatives which may result in mutual assistance.

Regards, Nick.

Hi Nick,

I am interested in your Robinson wills.  I have William Robinson married Ann Beckett in 1774 with children Nancy, Mary and William.  Daughter Nancy married John Moreton.

I don't know much about son William born 1783 but do have his date of death as 1848 from another researcher.

The wills are in the right place for this family.....  :)

Jean

PS.  The will images are copyright to CRO but transcriptions are your own and they are copyrighted to you.

Hi Jean,

I have three different Robinson Family branches in the maternal half of my tree.  I haven't connected them earlier on yet.

These are of interest to you.

William ROBINSON 1784 - 1848 born Gt. Budworth, Farmer
=
Mary PRESCOTT 1788 -1857 born Gt. Budworth.

Names mentioned in William's will are sons, William and Joseph, dear wife, Mary, and my sister, Nancy MORETON.  I believe that this is the son to whom you refer.

I also have the father's will - William ROBINSON (the elder) died 1818. This mentions son William, daughter Nancy MORETON, other daur, Mary and to confirm 'my friend and relation Allen BECKETT.

Also William ROBINSON, Marbury, died 1803 is probably his father, but I didn't prove it yet.

You will also therefore be interested in the will of George PRESCOTT (Mary's dad).

These wills are great. They contain lots of detail about property, possessions and locations.

Please send me a personal message and I can arrange to let you have the transcriptions.

.... anyway farewell for now my new distant cousin....

Nick.

Hi
thanks for your kind offer
I wonder if you would be so good as to look at the Wills of both Randle Lambs please. On the 1770 one, if there is mention of grandaughter or daughter Mary.
On the 1796 one if mention of daughter Mary (could read wife of Peter Dean )
Thanks

The 1778 will does mention 'Mary LAMB daughter of my son Randle LAMB'

There is a strong possibility that the Randle LAMB referred to in the 1796 admon is the son named above.  I know for sure that the 'Mobberley' Randle LAMB came from the Northwich area originally.  He was my 5 x Gt Grandfather.

In a somewhat ironic reversal, I started my life in Mobberley and now find myself in Northwich.

There is also another Randle LAMB listed in the 1660 Northwich Hundred Poll Tax records as follows:-

'Randle Lamb Lab & Elizabeth his w - 1. 0 '   (one shilling I guess)

This is another ancestor I am sure but I still have a lot of linking to do with this family.

Send me a personal message if you are interested in more information.

Nick
thanks for replying. This is a bit of a longshot on my behalf as I have a Mary Lamb born about 1767 in the Middlewich/Nantwich area. She Married James Dean a Millwright in 1790, so I am really putting feelers out to try and trace Mary  and who her parents were. Are there any details in the wills that would throw out any clues ?
Regards
Trish

I'd be interested in any details from William's will as Nancy's husband John is my 4th great grand uncle (!), according to my family tree programme,
any info you can give on what she was left at all?
Many thanks!

Hi - I've just found this website in a desperate trawl for information about Ann Faulkner born in Lymm about 1831.  I have her marriage certificate to John Starkey (1853) which states that her father is Joseph Faulkner, Innkeeper, deceased.  I've been through the 1841 census and there's no trace of him so he may well be the one mentioned here!  There are many young Ann Faulkners in the Cheshire area living with other families  and so if this will pin her down (and give me her mother's name) - that would be awesome.

Joseph FAULKNER (Abt 1786) married Mary BURGESS (Abt 1790) at Bowdon on 22/11/1814

Joseph was Innkeeper at the Spread Eagle in Lymm.

Son Thomas born abt. 1816 was my ancestor.  No further children's details sorry.

Regards,

Nick.

That's terrific, Nick.  I'm so grateful to you.  I'd come up against a solid wall and couldn't find a way round it.  There are lots of trees out there that are full of misinformation and I couldn't find one that was verifiable.  I owe you!

Hello Nick,

I would be most interested in the details of the admon & will of the 2x William Roylance respectively. They are my sister in law's direct ancestors being 4x & 3x great grandfathers. Shall I send a pm with my email address?

I've just discovered, via the Marriage record of my ggg grandfather John Lamb, that his father is Randle Lamb.
This was John's second marriage, taking place in Manchester during 1843 and Randle's occupation is recorded as 'Smith'.
As all the Randle Lambs I've found so far, seem to come from Cheshire, I'm wondering if my Randle is connected to those discussed in these posts.
John has been reported as being born in 1791 and 1801 and he was a boilermaker.
I'd appreciate any information.

Hello.
I have just joined Rootschat and came across this subject whilst researching my Hollingworth ancestors. My Great-great-grandfather, James Hollinworth was a blacksmith in Hale Barns. I have a copy of his will dated 4th September 1832, in which he names his wife Martha (nee Renshaw) and his sons James, William, Thomas and John. I see from your list that you have a James Hollinworth of Hale Barns, a blacksmith, who died in 1825 whereas my James Hollinworth died in 1834. Is there any possibility that we are talking about the same man? If so, and your will ties up with the detail in my will, could you possibly let me have a copy of your transcription as I am finding it very difficult to read the handwriting. Many thanks.

Hi Dianorcam and welcome to Rootschat.

If you don't get a reply from Nick T about your will, (I see he has not replied to posts on this thread  since 2013), you could try putting the will on the Handwriting Deciphering Board here on Rootschat.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/handwriting-deciphering-recognition/.
There are help topics there, and information about how to post an item you need deciphering.
You might find you just need to post the parts you're stuck on.
Somebody will be able to help you out I'm sure.  :)
