My great grandfather, Clarence. Can anyone tell me what his medals were, please? On his gravestone it says that he was an MBE but I haven't been able to find any evidence of that.
-
Hi,
Whilst you are waiting for your restore.
The medal on the left (shaped like a cross) of the set of three looks like the MBE to me. What was your G. Grandfathers full name?
Regards,
Mo

Clarence Samuel Howe.
Born 1865, Brightlingsea, essex but lived most of his life in Aberdeen and Nairn.

Hi Dave and Irene,
Thanks for the clean up. He looks somewhat smarter now!
Still hoping someone might be able to say for definite on the MBE question. I'd love to know when and why.
Cheers,
Jen

Hi,
Well, he took a bit of finding ;D.
Go to www.gazettes-online.co.uk and choose the Edinburgh one. Look down the right hand side for "Search the Archive" and then advanced search. Just put the date in and in the "exact phrase" box type Clarence Samuel Howe.
Issue is 13582 1st April, 1920 Capt. Clarence Samuel Howe, Master SS "City of London" Page 83. If you go to page 1 of the supplement you will see it is the honours list and page 56 is the start of the MBE`s (I think).

Mo,
That is fantastic. Thank you so much for finding it. I honestly thought that whoever ordered Clarence's gravestone had either made a mistake or had delusions of grandeur.
I knew that he had been involved in a sea rescue, when he was a much younger man, which resulted in a citation from the King of Norway. Seems he was quite a man!
Thanks again.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat, Jen hasn't been on Rootschat for 10 years so you may not get a response.
Added....I misread the date that Jen was last on Roots as 2009 so please disregard the above

Noooo….it hasn't been ten years! I don't spend as much time on Rootschat as I used to but still check fairly regularly and will always respond to some who replies to one of my posts.
Hello Brian,
We are indeed related, through Clarence Howe. My grandfather was John McIntosh Howe. I think I might have spoken, on the phone, to a member of your family in Greenock some years ago. Whoever it was gave me a thorough telling off about the behaviour of my grandparents, who apparently never got in touch again after they moved to Middlesbrough around the time of WW2. I took the blame squarely on my shoulders although I wasn't born until several years later!! ;D
I grew up near Middlesbrough but have lived in Cumbria for the past forty years.

Hi Jen,
No idea who that was in Greenock as my mother Margaret (nee Glass) died in 2008 and my father in 2010 but I have information on our side of the Howe family - my phone number is (*) for a chat?
Kind regards,
Brian

It might have been your mother, Brian. As I said, it was a number of years ago.
I have just looked at my tree - you are definitely on it! ;D

Hi Jen
My mother had Dementia so not sure how she would have responded to anyone in the family.
An old friend of mine who has just retired as a Doctor in Adelaide has been doing the research on my family as it is a hobby of his and I was surprised when he provided me with your details to make contact.
He has done my family tree/ history going back on both side of my family to the early 1700's.
I have some photos of my grandfather Benjamin and grandmother with details of what he did in the war.
