Hi
Am looking for information on a William Schmidt from around Wisconsin who would have been in his early 20's during WW2. He was in Brisbane for a period during the war in 1945 and was known as Bill.I do not know what service he was in but an Aunty who knew him thought it may be the US Marines or Army. There are so many Schmidts that I'm finding it difficult to get anything at all.I would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction as to where and how to get information or if anyone may have information. Was told one time his mother was an American Indian descendant.
Regards Bob

Have been told that his second name could be Carl. Also have found through searching Nat Archives a William C Schmidt born 1922 from Sheboygan.Would love more info.He may have served in the navy.Where can you find US Navy enlistment records?

In the US WWII Army Enlistment Records, there is a William C. Schmidt born in 1922 in Wisconsin. His residence was Sheboygan. He enlisted 18 Jan 1943 in Milwaukee as a private. He was listed as single with no dependents. He had 4 years of high school. He was 64 inches tall and 105 pounds. Maybe that's the guy you found?

Thank you for that info. We are looking for a needle in a haystack actually.A William Schmidt was here in Australia during WW2 .All we have to go on is the name and he came from Wisconsin, and would have been about 23 in 1945.We found a badge amongst her mother jewellery when she passed away which is a "submarine combat patrol badge" which suggest he could have been in the Navy
Thanks again

Dear trublue, Do you know if William died in or survived WWII?? Or do you know where else he lived after the war??

Hi Lissa
We do not know what happened to him. By reports from my wife's Aunty they were planning to marry and my wife's mother being only 17 had consent papers signed and he disppeared and no more contact was made. Her Aunt at the time was only 14 and cannot remember too much about him but says if she saw a photo would be able to recognize him.
Thank you very much for you help. Will follow through with what you have found so far

Very interesting. You sure have your hand on the pulse, I've been searching for years and have always come up empty. One lead we followed from a William Schmidt I found on Rootsweb familytrees ,was encouraging for a while after I took a punt and looked in white pages for that area and connected his son who has just sent over a photo, but her Aunt did not recognize him. However you have again given us somthing to chase. Much obliged

Bob, Glad to be of some help tho' dubious, at best! . Hope some useful leads here for you. Part of the process is one of elimination as much as it is inclusion......
Keep the faith! just when you think you've "hit the wall", new records are transcribed and put on-line leading to a new "VOILA" ;D
I'll keep rummage around some more, as well.......

I am trying to find find information on a William Schmidt known as Bill who was in Brisbane Australia during the war. From what we have been told he served in the USA Navy. Her Aunty said she thought he came from Wisconsin but cannot be sure or tell us anymore. Photos her mother had of him were destroyed by fire years ago.Where would the best place to start searching as I cannot find any links to Navy personnel. We would appreciate any help that may be out there.

Is there a way to find out which branch, special forces, etc were stationed near your wife's mother, to start with. If you know that, you might be able to contact the branch of the military and they can narrow down your search for you. I am not sure who would have that initial information. Maybe a historical society would be able to guide you.

Thank you Kath. The SeeBees where heavily involved in building in the immediate area of where she lived. We did however find a badge amongst her mothers jewellery which looks like a submariners badge.Submarines where in Brisbane at the time but on the other side of the city. That is as much as we have been able to find out

Hi Bob, I posted the link to your last search for William Schmidt. Might be helpful.

Hi Lissa
We checked out all but came up empty. The Aunty who could identify him, when shown a photo of a William Schmidt in Army Uniform said the uniform was not the one and her description of what she remembered was a Navy Uniform.
Thank you again for your previous help.

Have you tried getting the obituary for the one who died in 1988? You might be able to find family members to contact and talk to.

Hi Kath
No I haven't tried but it may turn up something.
Thanks
Bob

Good luck. Try finding a public library in the town or county he died in and email them, or check out RAOGK in the county and state he died in and ask them if they can get the obit for you. Good luck and keep us posted. We are nosy here. ;D
