Title: Fact's Page Problems in FTM 2006
Post by: atth2o on Sunday 10 August 08 15:36 BST (UK)
I am using FTM 2006 - Version 16

I have learned a lesson this morning. Never go and change Facts before your first cup of coffee!

I was adjusting a Birth Reference to a Baptism. Rather than making a whole new Fact for the Birth, I changed the name. A pop up window came up and asked me if I wanted to change all the facts under this category to Baptism. Before I read the whole thing I clicked it. The program has now changed all my Births to Baptisms in the Facts page.

Despite numerous attemps, I cannot repeat this feat again to change it back. Perhaps it's because I have had a coffee?

Anyone have any ideas on how to change all the facts under one name to another for all the individuals in your tree? I have over 2000 people in my tree and I can't stomach the though of having to do it one at a time.

Thanks,
Nancy

I'm a little confused here, so bear with me.

The fact BIRTH already exists and you somehow changed the fact BAPTISM to the fact BIRTH for all records?  It sounds implausible.  Can you do a quick check and display the drop down list of all the FACT entries and see if there are separate listings for BAPTISM and BORN.

If you double click any FACT entry a small window appears.  Where it says TYPE there is a down arrow and when you click on that you will see the option list.  Check that there are entries for BAPTISM and BORN.

Unless you have a backup you can restore from it looks like whatever you did may be permanent.  Possibly you could try doing whatever you did before, in reverse?

Hi Downside,

Yes, there are the two entries for Baptism and Born.  It is not the Born entry that I am having the problem with.

I have added a fact called "Birth Reference" which contains all the references to order a certificate.  (From Free BMD).  They are now all listed under "Baptism".

I have tried to change this back but it will only do it one at a time now?

Hope that helps explain my dilemma.

Have you closed you current session since you made this change?

There is a remote possibilty that you may be able to use your backup file:

filename.fbk
 or
filename.fbc (compact version)

where filename = whatever name your .ftw file is called.

If you have not closed FTM down since opening it then, then do a search for your .fbk backup file.

Click on Start >> Search >> For Files and Folders.

The name of the file to search for is: *.fbk
The name of the file to search for is: *.fbc

Check the date and timestamp and see if it was before you changed things.

If it was then make a copy of it and copy it to another folder.

You can then close FTM and then open this backup file and you will be back to where you started.

Hi Downside,

Sorry to say, I tried this.  It told me that I already had that current version open.  Since then I closed the program and tried to repeat the problem.

I did an "Alternate Facts Report" to see how may entries were doubled up.  I switched the ones that also had "Baptisms" listed to at least correct them.

Interestingly, I also found a few other errors.  I also have Facts named:

1881 Census
1881 Census Address.

These list the census data.  A few had two of the same fact name meaning  that I just highlighted the wrong one when I entered it.  When I corrected them, it asked me the the same question - Do I want to change them all.

It only seems to happen when it's the first time I try to change the name of a fact.  After that, the box never appears.

I really wish that you had the controls over Facts that you do with Master Sources.

Thanks for your help,
Nancy
