Title: Folkestone Cemetery
Post by: Mogsmum on Thursday 14 August 08 19:57 BST (UK)
In the past, when I've had a query about finding a grave in Maidstone cemetery, I have been able to make enquires over the telephone.

Does anyone here either live in Folkestone, or know whether its possible to make similar enquiries regarding their cemetery in Cheriton Road?  In effect, I know my grandfather (who died in 1935) is buried there somewhere, but I'd like to find out exactly where before visiting, particularly since I'm told 'it's a huge place'!

Hi Mogsmum

Yes, it is a huge place!
Googling Folkestone Cemetery brought up some interesting links.
It's administered by Shepway District Council:

It is pretty big, but it's probably arranged by year so wouldn't be that hard to locate the general area he is. I used to go to school over the road at the Harvey (top left) - I am in Cheriton about once a month if you need a photo.

Hi folks,

Thank you for the information.   I'm hoping to find the grave of Edward Sydney Dunmall (husband of Winifred) who I believe, died in February 1935, so ..

Betty - I'll give the Environmental Services a ring next week.  Thank you for that.

spongebob - I lived in Folkestone for a short time when I was very young, and your reply reminded me that our next door neighbour's son went to Harvey Grammar School.    I thought he was wonderful - unfortunately I was about 4 and he was at least 15 so any designs I had on a lasting relationship were doomed to failure!!   The kind offer of a photo is much appreciated and one I shall bear in mind.

panda40 - That too is a very kind offer, thank you, but please don't make a special trip since I've no idea yet where the grave might be, nor even if there is/was any sort of headstone - and I'd hate to drag you away from the ironing which will inevitably follow all that washing :)

Hello Folks,
Is there anybody who lives near Cheriton Road Cemetery who has the time to find my great grandparents graves please? Charles F Bruce died April 1928 and his wife Rosa (nee Bingham) Bruce in November 1928. I will be visiting Folkestone from Australia in early October and would like to visit their graves.

I know they both had  funeral services conducted at Holy Trinity and I'm assuming they were buried at Cheriton Road. I doubt they would have been buried at St. Mary and St. Eanswythe if the services were at Holy Trinity. I have emailed Shepway Council for their assistance but so far no reply.

I'm quite happy to spend an afternoon searching when I get there, but was hoping for a map or layout if anybody has one? Regards Maggie :)

Hello Maggie, welcome to RootsChat :)

I'll gladly have a look in the cemetery for your great grandparents graves.
Depending on the weather it might be this week, but I will be able to get there at some point in the near future (I'm glad of the excuse to have a wander round ;D )

Hello Betty,

thank you for your welcome and a BIG thank you for offering to look for my great grandparents graves. Just today, I heard back from Shepway Council who were able to give me a burial plot number and a map of the cemetery. How good is that! ;D

My pending visit to Folkestone has been made all the more enjoyable, knowing that there are kindly folk like yourself who are prepared to go out of their way to help. Thank you once again. Maggie :)

Hi Maggie

What's the burial plot number? From previous searches I know the plot numbers are not in a logical order, but it might help me to know it.

Does the map give any indication of the layout of the plots by number?

Hello again Betty,

yes the plot number is 3203 and its in the consecrated grounds to the right hand side of the main cemetery entrance going in. It looks as though the burial plot is in the third row of the second quadrangle. I think I'll be able to find it easily enough without you having to bother with a trip yourself. But thank you for your very kind offer anyway.

Cheers
Maggie :)

You will probably be able to find it OK with that information.
I might still have a look next time I'm there, as a) It's nice to have something to look for while I'm wandering around & b) I'm nosey ;D ;D

Enjoy your visit to England & especially Folkestone :)

Ha ha ha! ;D
If you come across my great grandfathers brother George Henry A Bruce 1857 - 1937 or their half sister Catherine Dennison Dowie (nee Bruce) 1878 - 1966, that would be extraordinary! The Bruce family lived in Earls Ave at what is now Wards Hotel. I will be staying there during my visit and hope to be staying in the very room that my mother was born in. She had such happy memories of growing up there. I have some old photos of the house, so it will be interesting to compare them from the early 1900's and now.
Cheers

No Iain, those monumental inscriptions are for the parish church which was closed to further burials in the 1850s when the local borough cemetery opened in Cheriton Road.

Maggie, Cheriton Road Cemetery wasn't really used after the late 1920s when the new cemetery at Hawkinge opened so I would expect they are probably at Hawkinge if they lived and were buried locally unless, of course, there were exisiting family graves with space at Cheriton Road.  The burials department at Shepway District Council should be able to tell you where they were buried.  What a lovely story, I do hope both you and Mogsmum have a wonderful time in Folkestone :)

Have you read about the yarn bombing of poppies all the way down the Road of Remembrance http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=654785.0

Hello Maggie.  I was at the cemetery today as I needed to look for a grave, so thought I would have a look for the one you are interested in, but I couldn't see it. I couldn't find the one I went to look for either, but not a wasted day as quite by chance I found a grave someone told me about ages ago but had no idea where it was or the year so I didn't bother to look for it. It made my day to spot it.

I don't know if you have already visited, but if you haven't be sure to wear decent shoes/boots, as the ground is very uneven, with sunken/broken gravestones, small holes caused I think by rabbits, & long grass (I got wet feet today ;D )

Hello again Betty,
I'm so sorry for not responding sooner, but I've only just revisited this forum and seen your message. Thank you so much for looking. When I visited the cemetery in early October, I was able to find the grave site of my great grandfather Charles Frederick Bruce and great grandmother Rosa. You're right in saying it's pretty overgrown, but it has a charm.
I was able to follow the map supplied by Shepway Council to their grave exactly. I was thrilled to find it. I didn't however have any luck with the other two family members George Henry Bruce or his half sister Catherine Dennison Bruce. I know George died in 1937 and there was a burial service at St Marys and St Eanes, but there is no record of him being interred there.
My visit to Folkestone was delightful. I was able to stay at the Bruce family home in Earls Ave which is now Wards Hotel. I actually stayed in the very room my mother was born in, in 1922! The Lees and the harbour brought back many childhood memories of when we visited my aunt. The trip alas was too short and I had to return to Australia.
Thanks once again for your efforts. Cheers
Maggie

Hello Maggie
I'm glad you were able to find two of the graves you were looking for & you enjoyed your visit to Folkestone.
Being able to stay in the room where you Mother was born must have made your visit extra-special.

For anyone else finding this thread & wanting help to find a grave, a little extra information -
Some of the graves are fairly recent, I've seen several mid to late 1900s, & there are a few early 2000s,. The most recent burial was in 2012, although in an older grave.

There are several military graves, usually easy to spot so I have put these on findagrave.com.
Any headstones that catch my eye & look interesting are also on findagrave.
Last time I was there my camera battery ran out just as I found a particularly interesting area, so it's an excuse to make another visit (if it ever stops raining!)

Hi
I am interested in the headstones of the victims of the WWI bombing raid victims.  Many were buried in this cemetery I believe.  I have an index of names of those until 1982 from Folkestone and District Family History Society that mentions plot numbers and gives a rough map but no map on plot numbers.  I think on this threat people have mentioned another map.  Does anybody have a map of the plot layouts? I need this quite urgently for a project with 48 young people 24 from Belgium next week.

many thanks

thanks for the quick reply!

Do you know if the plot numbers are easy to find? I have never done this before and the thought of 48 students doing it is rather worrying!

Zoe,

the cemetery is very overgrown but I found it easy enough to find a particular plot. The area where my relative is buried is marked as per my new attachment, which is laid out left to right like reading a book.

I can only presuming the other plots are arranged in a similar fashion. But the council will be able to confirm that.

Hi BettyofKent!

I see that you have Spain's in Walmer on your tree, My surname is Spain and i have ancestors around Folkestone, Denton, Dover and other local area's dating from around 1770's into the early 1900's.

Do you know if there are any Graves with this surname in Folkestone?  I was in Folkestone yesterday looking around the harbour area as some of my ancestors lived there.  I'm hoping to take another trip there some day for a stroll around the cemetery and it would be great if i could find some Spain's there!

  ;D

Hello kissosweet, welcome to RootsChat :)

I don't know if there are any Spain graves in Folkestone cemetery, but I wouldn't be surprised, Spains seem to have been all over Kent ;D
