Title: 1871 Census - Jonah Fossey - COMPLETED WITH VERY MANY THANKS TO KARENLEE
Post by: Zephyr on Tuesday 26 August 08 01:24 BST (UK)
Could someone please do a check of the 1871 census for a Jonah Fossey.  According to the IGI, when he married in Arlesey in September 1871 he was 20 years old and his father's name was Daniel.  I can't find him on 1881 census - the nearest I have found is a James Fossey married to a Mary Ann but it says they were both born Shillington.  I know his wife (Mary Ann Johnson) was born Arlesey.  I am wondering what he gives as his place of birth on an earlier census.

If anyone can help it would be most appreciated.

With many thanks.

Hi Zephyr

A Jonah FOSSEY appears on the 1861 Census with father Daniel and mother Sarah, birthplace Arlsey.  Did you want details from this Census or do you already have it?

Hello Karen

The 1861 details would be great, thank you.  At least I now know there is such a person - I couldn't find Jonah's birth on freebmd so wasn't sure whether the transcription on the IGI was correct or not!

Thank you very much for your offer of 1861 census details of the family.  It is much appreciated.

Hello Karenlee

Thank you very much indeed for all that information.  It proves that there was definitely a Jonah Johnson, at least before 1881!  I shall have to have another look on the 1881 census under Forsey in case the enumerator made a mistake with the spelling.

Like you, I have never seen all the girls listed first before - wonders never cease!!!

Many thanks again for all your help - this is a new branch of the family for me so all that census information is much appreciated.

With very best wishes.

Hi

I can find Daniel and Sarah on the 1881, but not Jonah yet.  There is a Jonah in Yorkshire, but his birthdate is out and he's unmarried, so I have discounted him as a possible.

Will keep looking

Cheers

Hello Karenlee

Jonah seems to have disappeared on the 1881 census.  I have been on 'family'search' looking at their 1881 census.  The nearest I have found is a James Fossey with wife Mary Ann (right ages) but their birthplace is given as Shillington, Bedford.  I have had a look at my road map and Shillington is not far from Arlesey so maybe Jonah changed his name ???

I hope you don't mind me asking but, is there any chance you can check the 1891 or 1901 censuses to see if Jonah reappears on them?

A mystery as to where he has gone!!

With best wishes.

Checked the 1881 and found :_

Jonah's brother George in Keighley Yorkshire, widowed and living with his mother in law Christina BRIGGS.

Other brother's Charles and William still at home with parents Daniel and Sarah.

Having found a brother in Yorkshire I am now wondering if the Jonah I found in Yorkshire born Arlesey might not be yours.

It does say he's unmarried and the age is out by about 3 years.... but still the most likely one yet.

I will see if I can find this Jonah on any  other census so that we can positively rule him out.

Hello Karenlee and Kanskar

Thank you both for your trouble on this one.  I don't think the Jonah in Yorkshire is the one I am looking for.  According to the IGI, Mary Ann Johnson married Jonah Fossey on 25.9.1871.  He was 20 and she was 19.  Also on IGI, there is a birth of a Jonah Fossey on 20.4.1851 which would fit in with the Male Fossey whose birth was registered in June quarter 1851.

Fingers crossed that Jonah reappears on 1891 or 1901, otherwise emigration is another line to follow.

With many thanks.

Hello Karenlee and Kanskar

Today I had a brainwave!!!  I looked on freebmd for any Fosseys born c 1871/72 (Jonah Fossey and Mary Ann Johnson married in 1871) and in 1872 there was a Mary Ann E Fossey.  I then searched on the IGI and found the birth of a Mary Ann Elizabeth Fossey, parents Jonah Fossey and Mary Ann Johnson.  The entry also gave the information that she married in 1894 in Kansas - so, Karenlee, it looks like yours was a good idea and that the family did indeed emigrate, probably sometime between 1872 and 1881.

Thank you for all your efforts in trying to trace the family for me on censuses post-1871, it was most appreciated.  I'm only sorry that I seem to have wasted some of your time and effort, but thank you for your help.

With kind wishes.

If you are wondering about the Jonah Fossey who emigrated to the US, I am one of his descendants in the US. He emigrated to Kansas. I have a letter addressed to him from England and a Methodist Hymnal he brought with him from England.

Hello Aester667

So lovely to hear from you.  It is quite a while since I have done any research on the Fossey family - looks like I am going to be busy now knowing where they emigrated to.  I will be able to update my tree on Ancestry.

Jonah married Mary Ann Johnson.  Mary had a sister Betsy Ann Johnson who married a Robert Bardy from York, Yorkshire, England, and it is the Bardy family that is my main area of research - my line of descent being from one of Robert's brothers!  Robert and Betsy moved back to York and had two sons and two daughters, one of their sons emigrated to the USA.

How marvellous for you to have a letter and a Hymnal - that is quite a bit of history to have in the family.  Is the letter from one of Jonah's brothers or sisters?

I have now found Jonah on the censuses at Salt Creek, Reno, Kansas so am looking forward to adding his sons/daughters to my tree.  Could I ask which of his sons/daughters you are descended from?

Many thanks for contacting me with your very interesting news and I look forward to hearing from you.

With kind wishes.

Zephyr  :)

 Zephyr,

I am glad to see your reply, distant cousin across the pond! lol.

Jonah Fossey is my great-great-great grandfather. He was born in 1850 and died in Nickerson, Kansas in 1948. He was married to Mary Anne Johnson on Sept 25, 1871 in Arlesey, Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom (where the hymnal I have came from). She lived from 1850-1907. They had 8 children. (Mary Anne Elizabeth Fossey, Charles Percy Fossey, Lila Eliza Fossey, Herbert Daniel Fossey, Johnson Samuel Fossey, William James Fossey, Maude Pearle Fossey, and Percy Jay Fossey.) Mary Anne Elizabeth Fossey is who I descend from.

If you need more information about my tree, let me know. Family Search has a good amount of information on this branch of the Fossey tree.

As far as the letter I found, it is from a Hannah Papworth. The letter is addressed to Jonah Fossey in Nickerson Kansas and the address says United States in the address. I think it came from England. It expresses condolences at his mother's passing, but it also talks about how sad his wife will be, so it may be her mother, rather than his. I am not sure. I am trying to figure it out. If you know the name Hannah Papworth, or it rings a bell let me know please. The woman who wrote the letter was his aunt either by blood or marriage. The mother that died was her sister (that is what the letter says.)

I will look around for more Fossey relics. My grandmother was fond of saving things and preserving letters. I have some from Jonah Fossey's daughter as well that she preserved. I was so surprised to see the one addressed to him, as it must be over 100 years old now.

Thank you again for your response!

Dear Aester667

Brilliant to find a new relative (no matter how distant)!

Thank you for the information on the Fosseys and I shall certainly check out the familysearch site.  I had found six children on the censuses so nice to be able to add another two.  Found a fair few of the children's marriages (newspaper articles on findmypast) but not one for Mary Ann Elizabeth Fossey.  Could I ask who she married?

Re Hannah Papworth.  I can help!!!  On checking my tree, Hannah Johnson 1854 - 1929 (sister to Mary Ann) married George Papworth 1854 - 1921.  Marriage date 20 July 1873 Arlesey, Bedfordshire.  They had six children (that I have found) - Mary 1874 - 1907, Agnes Selina 1876 - 1971, George Albert 1879 - 1896, Harry 1881 - 1967, Hubert Lovell 1884 - 1918 and Bertram Owen 1887 - 1964. If you would like to know who they married and details of children I can let you have such details as I have.

George's parents were George Papworth and Eliza Squires.  No date of George's death but Eliza died in 1895.  Hannah Johnson and Mary Ann Johnson's parents were Samuel Johnson and Sophia Charles.

I have Jonah Fossey's parents as Daniel Fossey (1821 - ?) and Sarah Knight (1823 - ?).

Hope this helps in some way.

As I said in my previous post, my connection is through Mary Ann's sister Betsy Ann Johnson who married Robert Bardy.  Robert had a younger brother - James Bardy (1854 - 1927).  One of James' sons was Alfred Bardy who married a Mary Jane Durkin.   My Mum (Dorothy Bardy) was their youngest daughter and I am her eldest daughter!

As regards Robert Bardy and Betsy Ann Johnson: they had two sons and two daughters.  One of their sons - Horace Bardy 1886 - 1949 - married an Ethel Jackson.  I have them emigrating to the USA in 1929 arriving Buffalo, NY, USA under the name Joseph Horace Bardy!  On a social security record he says he is from York, England and on another document he says he entered the country as Horace Bardy so I am presuming Joseph Horace and Horace are the same person especially as the wife's name is Ethel in each case. On 1940 census I have the family living Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts.  They had two children - Irene Bardy 4.9.1910 who married a James Andrew Heslin, and Horace Peter Bardy 17.8.1912 - 1973.

Looks like the Johnsons/Bardys were quite adventurous spreading their wings across the ocean!

It looks like I am going to have plenty to do updating my tree with the Fosseys and Bardys who emigrated.

Thank you so much for contacting me and if I can help in any way just let me know.

I look forward to learning the name of Mary Ann Elizabeth Fossey's husband's name if you would be so kind.

With very best wishes

Zephyr (Janet)

Dear Zephyr,

No problem! His name was Robert Harvey Cross and they had 2 children, Ruby Glen Cross and Harold Jay Cross. Ruby Glen was my grandfather's mother. Her life and health were shortened due to a car wreck.

Mary Anne Elizabeth Fossey was my grandfather's grandmother, who moved in with my grandparents as she advanced in age. They didn't have an extra room, so my mother and her were roomies. Lol. They loved each other and had a wonderful, close relationship. My mother was in high school. Mary Anne Elizabeth Fossey is who I was named after. Elizabeth is my middle name.

Thank you for the information about Hannah Papworth! It confirms what I found too. I was curious to know about the person who wrote the letter I have.

Dear Aester667

Thank you so much for all your information on the Fossey/Cross families.  It has been wonderful to be able to learn so much about the American side of the family.  The familysearch site also has lots of information on the family which has been very useful so thank you for putting me in that direction.

I can see that Mary Ann Elizabeth Fossey lived to a grand old age - no doubt she had many interesting stories to tell!  She sounds like a very loving and caring person.

It has been lovely to hear from you and if I can help with any information from this side of the pond I will certainly do my best.

With very best wishes to you.
