Title: Moles Mill Braes - where on earth???
Post by: claireandsi on Wednesday 27 August 08 07:26 BST (UK)
Is there anyone out there who can tell me where Moles Mill Braes or Wester Fireburn are/were?

All I know is that they are in the parish of Eccles, Berwickshire, but I would like to pin them down a bit more precisely if I can.

Thanks

Claire

Hi Claire,

Don't know about Moles Mill Braes, but there is a Fireburnmill on the river Tweed just west of Coldstream.  And a bit further west is Wester Fireburnmill!  :)

Thanks for that Little Nell.

I had found Fireburnmill on a map, but hadn't been able to find Wester Fireburn - about how far is it from Fireburnmill?

Moles Mill Braes sounds a bit like a local name - it isn't essential to my research, but it is where my gt gt gt uncle died (actually hanged himself  :-[) and I was wondering if it was a very remote spot (I know the area a little bit, and I suppose most places are quite remote...).

Again, thanks for your help - I think I may just go and focus on something a little more cheery for a while

Hi Claire
I went through the 1881 census discs looking for Wester Fireburnmill Eccles I came up with 2 families living there. It is in enum dist 2. I looked at all the other places that were in dist 2, Birgham was one of them.
I am attaching a map that shows the approx area for enum dist 2 in green and fireburnmill in pink. Pretty close, so at least it will give you and idea of the area.

Evening all

I had a look at the genuki gazetteer but Moles Mill Braes isn't listed.

It sounds like it could be the name of a farmstead that has long since gone, Fireburn Mill is still around, but you could almost pass it without noticing, just a couple of houses set back on  the A697 nr Coldstream at the junction towards Birgham and Kelso.

It was situated where the A698 meets the Tweed to the west of Coldstream. No buildings marked there now.   :-\

Hi,
As a matter of interest, a short distance from Fireburn Mill on the other side of the River is a place called Gallows Hill about a mile from Wark.

Thankyou all for helping to satisfy my curiosity.  At least I have pinned it down to a smaller area.  I can't help wondering what caused him to kill himself, but some things will always be a mystery, I guess

Beckey - Gallows Hill is a bit of a of a gruesome coincidence, don't you think!!

Hi Claire, This is uncanny. I am doing a project on a family in Coldstream and I'd like to PM you about your great, great, great uncle because I think he turned up in the course of my research.

I am almost certain that my great great grandfather registered the death of your uncle. I do so hope you get to read this.

Claire, I have joined this board having read your post. My great granny was Agnes Sligh, daughter of David Sligh who was the brother of George Sligh, our 3X great uncle who hanged himself. My great granny had three siblings: Margaret (Meg), Thomas (Tam) and Alice. This is my third post. Hope it reaches you.
