Title: AG Lawson & Co., 19 Pride Hill, Shrewsbury
Post by: Jaybeebuzz on Thursday 28 August 08 18:50 BST (UK)
Hi everyone

I have discovered that an ancestor lived above AG Lawson & Co (hosiers), 19 Pride Hill (late Stead) Shrewsbury, in 1891. From Kellys 1891 I can see that Lloyds Bank was at no.1, Freeman Hardy & Willis no. 13, between 22 & 23 was Seventy Steps Passage, and between 26 & 28 was the start of Castle St and St Mary's St. I wonder if anyone with better knowledge of Shrewsbury than I and with perhaps old detailed street maps, can tell me where no.19 would be today? What I am really trying to do is find the building in today's Pride Hill to take a photo (if it still exists). I walked up Pride Hill earlier this week but none of the shops had any numbers on them, and of course, no.19 today is not necessarily no.19 from 1891 in any case.
I looked at the old street maps at Shropshire Archives but they didn't give the house/shop numbers unfortunately. Do they have any other resources that would help?
My receipt for Superdrug gave their address as 29/30 Pride Hill if that helps anyone!
Any help or suggestions very much appreciated!  :)

I have now discovered that GAME is at the modern day number 19 Pride Hill but would this same building have been number 19 in 1891?

Have you tried contacting or visiting the Shrewsbury Museums Service?

http://www.shrewsburymuseums.com/home

Might be worth a try ;)

Lloydy

Thanks for your input.

I had considered it but not yet done anything about it!! I have e mailed the Shropshire Archives Centre to see if they have anything that might shed light on where the shop was but no reply as yet. I think I might as well drop the museums service a line as well.... in for a penny, in for a pound as they say!

Thanks again for the suggestion!

Just to tie up this thread, and for the information of others who might find themselves with a similar enquiry........

Shropshire Archives very kindly looked in all their trade directories for me and by plotting who was at 18, 19 & 20 Pride Hill over the years they were able to deduce (thanks in the main to H Samuel Jewellers) that 19 Pride Hill in 1891 is the very same building in 2008! Therefore my ancestor once lived above what is now the GAME store! (I'm hoping the upper part of the building has remained largely in its original state over the years, for photographic purposes!).

Thanks again to those who have contributed to this thread.

this was Pride Hill in 1888. I think that number 19 is probably the lighter building, 4th from the right.

The building to the right of it was knocked down to make way for a shopping centre.

Thank you very much for that! Funnily enough I went into Shrewsbury today to take a picture of the building above the GAME store and yes, you are quite right, it is the lighter coloured building in the pic you give the link to. The old photo has now made my research complete!! Thank you!
