Wrote screeds on this a while back hang on and Ill see if I can find it for you. .... Make yourself comfy theres a lot to go through ;D
-
Cant find it - never mind here we go Ill write it again.....
Story starts at the top with Wisdom Smith c.1763 Steeple Claydon Bucks who married Hannah Smith in 1782 at Bletchington Ox.
They had several children of whom 2 are important here as they both married Grays. The first is Tabitha Smith c.1803 Cropwell Bishop Nthants who married William Gray b.cir 1800 (tentatively believed to be William Gray c.1794 Ashwell Hrts s/o Charles & Equally).
The second daughter is Bertha/Bethania/Bethany Smith c.1800 Seaton Rutland and she married James Gray aka Mobbs who was b.cir 1795 and quite likely a close relative of William Gray.
Why the family took the Mobbs surname is unknown to me at the current time.
Anyway James Gray aka Mobbs and Bertha/Bethania/Bethany had:
Elderi/Eldria/Eldri Gray b.cir 1821 Winsley Nthants d.1862 interred Lincoln Newport Cem, married Moses Smith c.1816 Harby Leic s/o Thomas & Sylvia.
Joshua Gray/Mobbs b.cir 1821-30 Ingham Lincs married Harriet b.cir 1841 Blyborough Lincs.
Righteous Gray c.1827 Elkesley Notts married Sage or Sagey Heron/Hearn d/o Edward and his first wife Christiana Smith.
Cornelius Gray c.1827 Elkesley Notts.
Francis Gray or Mobbs b.cir 1835 Boston Lincs married Selina
Johina Gray or Mobbs b.cir 1837 (no other info)
Moses Gray or Mobbs c.1840 Corringham Lincs married Sylvia Smith c.1841 Corringham Lin d/o Robert & Tabitha.
-
Next Generation:
Moses Smith and Elderi Gray had:
Thomas Smith b.cir 1840 Harby Leic who married Sophia.
Sophia Smith b.cir 1841 Harby Leic married Joseph Gray b.cir 1844 Thorpe Yks.
Emma/Emily Smith b.cir 1846 Normanby Lincs married Philistia/Plisti Smith b.cir 1843 Keadby Lin. Its believed Philistia is a son of Elijah Boswell by one of his wives, Alice Smith (Most of her children went by the Smith name). Interestingly enough there is another link here back to the Grays as Alice was a daughter of William Smith and Jemima Gray who married in 1802 at Yelling Hunts.
John Smith b.cir 1850 Bishops Norton
Rabbi Smith b.cir 1857 Nettleham Lincs m.Deloraine/Delorany
Sarah Smith b.cir 1851 Willowson.
----------
Joshua Gray/Mobbs and Harriet had:
William b.cir 1853 Barrow Lincs
Elijah 'Lasher' b.cir 1856 Stockton or Rand, Lincs
Moses b.cir 1862 Barkwith Lincs
Reajiel?? b.cir 1864 Market Rasen Lincs
Raney aka Emily b.cir 1866 Lissington or Rasen Lincs
Uriah b.cir 1869 Market Rasen married Mary Ann Wain 1900.
Charles b.cir 1872 Market Rasen
Mary Ann b.cir 1875 Market Rasen
---------
Righteous Gray and Sage Heron settled at Kingsthorpe Nthants and had:
Alfred
Samuel
Nathan who married Sarah
Edward
Emily
----------
Francis Gray/Mobbs and Selina had:
Cornelius b.cir 1860 Belton Lincs married Sevesta (silvesta?)
b.cir 1870 Dewsbury Yks

Elisha b.cir 1867 Gainsborough Lincs
Bethany b.cir 1868 Sheffield
Delarina b.cir 1869 Yorkshire
----------

Righteous Mobbs b.cir 1860 Gainsborough married Lucy Rogers 1882 she b.cir 1865 Margate Kent
Cornelius Mobbs b.cir 1863 Springthorpe Lin married Elizabeth Ellmore 1881 she b.cir 1862 Sleaford
Levi Mobbs b.cir 1865 Lincoln married Mary Ellen Gabbitas 1886 she b.cir 1865 Gringley Notts
Mary J Mobbs b.cir 1867 Tresswell Notts

josephmobbs I have your number I will ring you tonight if I get chance, once again many thanks to both of you

Absolutely yes. If it was considered that the brides family were more 'black blooded' (Romany) it was preferable to use her name. Often the names were interchangeable. Often they adopted other names to avoid the law, or if someone in the family had been caught by the law, or detection by the general masses. Ambrose Smith adopted his wifes fathers first name of Reynolds, as a surname later in life. All sorts of reasons.
-
looking at my list of children of Moses & Silvia, I have one name extra. Viches b.cir1858 in Corringham Lincs.
-
Was that from the Census? I think I saw that and deduced it was Righteous (enumerator error?) you get a lot of that kind of thing with unfamiliar names.
-
Ok, Viches is Righteous in the 1881 census which answers some other question I ve pondering for some time. I have not been able to follow Righteous through the census after 1871. have you any ideas on how or where to track him in the 1891 & 1901 census.
The family tree you posted was very useful, thanks again. Does your line include Moses? If so I have Photos of Moses & Siliva & a Memory card when he was buried.

Hello,
I am researching the family of Joshua GRAY/MOBBS born c.1832 who married Harriett SMITH born c.1841. This family spent some time living in my house, so I am interested in tracing descendants of them and their children.
Does anyone have any information they could share.
An65 - Your post of 4 Sept 08 was very useful.
Many thanks
Mbarnard
-
mite have a tiny bit of what you seek ;)
what would you like to know (or should that be, what do you already know?)
-
I am trying to trace the movements of Joshua and Harriet and the 6 children who are living in Champan Street, Market Rasen, Lincs in the 1881 census. I have found them all in 61 and 71, and most of them in 91. In 01 and 11 I only have Uriah. I have the marriage of Joshua and Harriett in Caistor, 1876. I am interested to find out more about them as they lived in the house I am now living in, and wonder i any one knows of any descendents who have more information/photos
Many thanks

We are not allowed to put email addresses on here for our own protection against spammers - and we can "private message" each other (IE talk off the boards) to swap emails but ONLY once both parties have posted on the boards 4 times. I think you have only made two posts. I know it sounds stupid but if you could just send two more messages - dont matter what it says, and then I will send you my email address.
I know there are people who read these boards and are descendants so I think you might just get lucky?
I know a fair bit on this group which Im more than happy to share, unfortunatly no photos.
-
Thank you very much for your reply!
-
I am so pleased that you two found each other! As I told you on Genes MBarnard, An65 is a mine of useful information. Something odd has happened on my tree and joshua seems to have lost all his relations and become an orphan!!!!
Cheryl
-
Thank you Cheryl for directing me this way. I was going to wait til the weekend to ask where all his relations had gone, I am quite new to Genes Reunited so wasnt sure if it was my user error!
Many many thanks :)
-
I will reload it at the weekend from the "working tree" and see if I can get them back!
-
Pls note - I have gone back and amended my posts in this thread as I had originally included Elias Gray b.1844 Abbotts Ripton in this family (because the old researchers who deposited records in the JGLS said he was of that family) -And he isnt of that family at all. So if you got Elias in your trees pls remove him - many thanks x

hi :)
I am from the Mobbs family in the Gainsborough area...I did know further back than I currently remember but my grandfather was Ronald Frederick Mobbs who I believe was originally born in Scunthorpe- maybe 1927ish- but moved to gainsborough...I also know that I'm related to some people in Morton who still have the Mobbs name. If you want I can try find out the previous family history again but I don't know very far back

The Elias Gray who married Amelia Heron was s/o Elias Gray and Sophia Smith.
Since Amelia and Sage(y) were sisters that would be how she was your aunt.
-
Becouse Amelia was my 2 x great granny and sagey was her sister so she's my 2 x great aunt
