Kieran Phelan possibly b. 1812. Wife Mary Anne Bergin? Lived near Kilkenny/Tip. border nr Urlingford. Children: Girl M. Dunphy, Dan, Michael, Ellen M. James Arthur Cantwell, Girl M. Cahill, William, Paddy b. 1863 M. Mary Shanahan [my grandparents]. The family of Paddy lived at Sragh in the parish of Tubridbrittain-my cousin Paddy Phelan still lives there. Burials are at Grain church. Would like to know if they appear in any tithe applotments or census details. Also are there any church records, burial marriage or christening for that parish...they were RC.
Any info. gratefully received...Jim

I had ancestors Phelan that I am trying to trace back - They lived in Urlingford..I have some old church records from there & will check to see if I can find a reference to the people you want. Would also appreciate any info you may have about Katy or Kitty Phelan, married to Tom Kinahan, around 1880. Died (young?) around 1890, leaving 2 small children. Thanks....

Thanks for offering to look up those church records...Irish ancestry is difficult to access this side of the water. I've looked up my Phelan tree but don't see a Kitty or Katy and no reference to Kinahan. The line might join with Kieran's siblings but I haven't got back that far yet. many thanks...Jim

Will keep trying...the location you gave is of supreme interest

The booklet that I have is "FENNOR GRAVEYARD" a listing of markers for grave plots. Frequently there are multiple names but the index lists only one main name. If any of the current names & dates match your groups; they may include ancestral data for deeper searching. The index lists are by dates.
From your message I extracted these basic names.

Hi Bill...thanks for the information...there are bound to be some family connections here although its often harder to trace forward than back. I don't know any relatives outside my immediate cousins so would find it hard to make a connection. From the graveyard at Grain I have a photograph of my grandfathers grave and I know his fathers grave is there too but I don't have any way of checking the details...here's the one I have got...PATRICK PHELAN of Sragh died 17th June 1936 (born 1863?) his wife MARY ANN died 30th May 1937, their son KIERAN died 4th August 1971 daughter MARGARET died 20th Jan 1974. If anyone can visit that churchyard...I'd love to have more details...Thanks again. Jim

Hi Bill...I made the trip to Graine and found lots of Phelan graves. Margaret Phelan (Bergin) D.29 Aug 1879 aged 47. But her husband KIERAN PHELAN of Goresgrove isn't buried there. His son Patrick and Mary Anne (Shanahan) Phelan who died 1936 & 37 respectively are there with 3 of their 12 children. There is also a Michael Phelan of Goresgrove D. 1903 and his wife Johanna (Hennessey) D.1889 with Bridget Phelan D. 1938 aged 58. Another grave has John Phelan D. 1877 aged 83 Mary (Campion) D. 1880 aged 79, brother Patrick who died in America and son Nicholas Phelan of Ballynascary D. 1909 aged 73...his son Edmund D. America. And another...Ellen Phelan of Tubrid D. 1956 aged 87 and son John Phelan D. 1966 aged 63. I was told that some of the family are buried at Fennor...the Shanahans and maybe KIERAN PHELAN...I believe his dates to be 1812 to 1912...but could be wrong...so if anyone has access to the burial lists at Fennor I would appreciate a look up...Thanks. Jim

Hello Bill, im doing my family research in this very area of Ireland. I still have family in Fennor and Urlingford but unfortunatley they are old, bad memories. So im having difficulty finding where my families graves are - im not sure which graveyrd to search in. I was told to look in Fennor graveyard so Nov 2006 off i goes to Ireland full of expectations, found my grandfathers, grandmother, great aunts graves but no luck on any further back, ive since heard of other graveyards like Graine&Rathbeg (where my father was born)!!!
In your post you mentioned "Fennor graveyard" listings booklet, how could i obtain this ??? A lot of the graves were unreadable in Fennor due to age and this listings booklet would answer some questions.
Any information on these grave yards would be a great help.
Regards Pat Callaghan.
Researching names - Callaghan, Cody, Nolan, Maloney, Grace Armstrong, Whelan, Norris, Brennan - all from the Urlingford/Fennor area`s.

I too am researching my Cody/Whalen/Prendergast Family in Urlingford.
I have a feeling some of them are buried within Fennor Graveyard as well.
Thomas Prendergast and Alice Jennings = Elizabeth M. Prendergast Sept. 22, 1866
William Cody and Catherine Whalen = Patrick Cody March 16, 1863
Elizabeth Prendergast and Patrick Cody emigrated abt. 1882 Urlingford to NYC
Thank-you

Hello Bob.
I'm a Coady descendant, my Grandmother was a Coady who lived around Urlingford parish. I have searched in Fennor Graveyard for any Cody or Coadys and found none but there are plenty of Coady headstones in The Mill Cemetery Urlingford including my Grandmother and some of her siblings and her parents too.
I saw your post on connorsgenealogy.com/Kilkenny I have emailed you.
I look forward to your reply

Hi all. I'm keen to follow up with some of you re a man named Patrick Cody who married Mary Phelan in Clifden Kilkenny. I have a wide spread of records for them: marriage in Clifden 1813, birth of son David born Clifden 1814, birth of daughter Margaret born Clifden 1822, birth of daughter Mary in Clifden 1825, birth of son Ned in Ballyhale 1829, birth of daughter Biddy (Bridget) in Ballyhale 1832, birth of son James in Ballyhale 1833. The dates seem a fair way apart but could have been miscarriages, etc. I'm particularly interested in the child named Biddy who migrated to Australia. I am more particularly interested to know more about Patrick Cody's family. On the death certificate for Biddy in Australia in 1899 her parents were listed as Patrick Cody and Mary Whelan. I'm thinking it's a typo!!??? Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to Rootschat Susan. :)
Quite common to have Phelans called Whelans. One Whelan man I know, went to look for the grave of his Whelan grandparents. When he could not find it, he asked an old local man, who said "sure they were Phelans!"

There is a headstone in Gowran Co Kilkenny the older generation were Whelan and the younger generation Phelans. Same family.
Good luck with your research

Thank you both for your replies. I guess that settles the discrepancy in name.
Where would I find a complete list of Gowran cemetery records. I wonder if Patrick Cody and Mary Whelan/Phelan are buried there? I can't find anything about them on ancestry, and being so far away........

This is a link for St Marys Church in Gowran.
The Church of the Assumption (RC) has a very large graveyard but is not recorded on line as far as I know.
