2005 was the Year of the Veteran...I made this header in honour of the occasion, fashioned from the plaster frame on parent's ww2 service photos.
For those of you who may not have these yet, here are some sites to help with your ancestors in the Canadian forces...Please note that new databases are constantly added to each reply
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- CEF signups / WW1 - attestation papers (http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-100.01-e.php)
After you have found information on your ancestor - see link; How to consult a file on-site or order a copy of the complete file (http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-130-e.html) This can be anywhere from a few to hundreds of pages....depending on how much info there was to record...mini will, medical/hospitalization...etc....( No battle history, though)
*NEW*when someone orders the copies, scanned files are being put online so check off the box for digitized, as a separate search you may find them already available in pdf form.
-if they received info of when they died in Canada...WWI veterans death cards (http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/microform-digitization/index-e.htmll)
- Canadian Expeditionary Force Study Group "The Matrix Project" http://www.cefresearch.com/matrix/contents.htm
- Soldiers of the South African War (http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/south-african-war/index-e.html)(1899 - 1902)
- For Merchant marine see reply #28
- Gazettes (http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/) London-gazette, Edinburgh-gazette, Belfast-gazette
- Victoria Cross (http://www.victoriacross.co.uk/) awards
- Check out this site for some help... How to search for your military information (http://www.1914-1918.net/grandad/medals.htm)
- Incomplete, as not all deaths are reported by family ...but a good source for vets who have gone since the two wars....Scroll down to use site Last Post" (http://www.legionmagazine.com/lastpost/)
Notes: The Nominal Rolls of the Canadian Expeditionary Force are described by Library and Archives Canada as the "lists of soldiers on strength with the unit on a particular date. They were generally created in the course of a unit's formation in Canada, often in preparation for departure overseas. Five copies of nominal rolls (army form MFW 20) were to be prepared by the regimental adjutant. Two were submitted to the headquarters of the Military District in which the unit was raised (one of which was to be forwarded to the Department of Militia and Defence in Ottawa). Three were to accompany the unit overseas. The first page was to contain a list of officers, arranged in order of rank. Other ranks followed on succeeding pages, arranged in alphabetical order, showing full name, rank, and regimental number." The 21st Battalion CEF was organized in Kingston Ontario during World War 1 (WW1), under Lt Col W.S. Hughes, of men and officers of Eastern Ontario. It was also known as the Eastern Ontario Regiment. 5326 men and officers passed through its ranks during the war. Only 106 of the original soldiers entered Germany at the end of the war. Some 3328 were killed, wounded or went missing in action. 11 battle honours grace its colours. Over 300 medals and citations were earned. It disbanded after the job was done, but is perpetuated by The Princess of Wales Own Regiment in Kingston Ontario. A museum and a significant archives are located in The Armouries in Kingston Ont. 21st Infantry Battalion Web Site: http://21st-battalion-2.tripod.com/page1.html CEF Study Group Web Site: http://www.cefresearch.com/phpBB2/
