I have this book & am willing to do look ups for anyone who'd like to know more about their Scottish ancestors (who were still living in 1938). It's a "who's who" type of book & it even mentions people's hobbies as well as the usual genealogy, education, address, occupation etc.
-
Who's the book written by, out of curiosity? ???
-
The book was published by E.J.Thurston, 177/8 Fleet Street,London, & Jackson,Son & Co.(Booksellers) Ltd , 73 West George Street,Glasgow. There is no author's name mentioned but in the preface it said it had taken two years to produce. There had been many difficulties, including copyright. The planned title had been "Who's Who in Scotland".There is an apology to subscribers for being unable to notify them of the alteration in the title. Thanks are given to the many friends who had assisted in the making of the book,in particular, the Rev.W.S.Crockett,D.D., minister of Tweedsmuir & editor of the Fasti of the Church of Scotland,1915-1928. It was the first publication of its kind in Scotland.I am assuming that the book was published in 1938/9.I bought it last year at a jumble sale as I thought it might come in handy!

Hi flst
Many thanks for your kind offer of a look-up. Who are the Patersons included in that volume?
Cheers,
Rodeo
-
Hi,
There are 32 Patersons listed. If you could specify either a geographical area, occupation or a christian name you're interested in, it would be helpful! There is such an amount of information it would take me ages to type it.
Kind regards,
flst :)
-
Hi flst
Thanks for your reply.
I'm interested in Patersons from Lanarkshire -- Gavin Paterson, architect, Lennox Dundas Paterson, architect, William Paterson, publisher (Paterson & Clubb), William Romaine Paterson, author (whose nom de plume was Benjamin Swift).

Hi flst
Eureka! James Paterson, JP, 60 Burnbank Road, Hamilton, is definitely one of my relations. I know he was a tailor by trade and the spouse of Jeanie Scoular. I'd be most interested in that biographical entry, if it's no trouble.
Many thanks.
Cheers,
Rodeo

Re my Sutherlands shoe shop

So pleased you found information on the shoe shop. The book I have is about people who were alive in 1938, so that might explain why your family are n't in it.

Always worth a look, but sorry in this instance there's no mention of him.

Thanks for your very kind offer.
I am looking for any information on James White, born 1878 and his sister Ariena, born 1871 and both died 1961. I think he had a newsagent shop in Govan and they lived in Cardonald in the 1950s.

I realise this hasn't been posted in for about a year, but I was wondering if you could try and find any Scotts, Steeles/Steels, Muirs, Mclintocks or Hendersons from the Airdrie/Coatbridge/Monkland area. I really appreciate anything you can do.

Just a long shot, but do you have any McNabs in Glasgow - specifically a William McNab who had a "Sign writing" or "Showcard" business?

Hi Flst,
Is there any mention of Stringer in your book? Glasgow area, especially if there is any reference to adoption, carpentry, crime, joining the armed forces and the names Dominic, Michael, Jack, John and Patrick.
Thanks!
-
I'd like to take advantage of your kind offer too on two surnames if I may.
Would a widow of surgeon Charles Armit Masson be entered? They lived in Glasgow. Her name was Isabella Telford Crum who had been a nurse prior to her marriage.
Also looking for a very common surname of Mckenzie/Mackenzie. There were several brothers in the coal and steel industries, some born in New Cunmock, Ayrshire and others born in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire. I know one had a manufacturing company in Glasgow but not certain of the company name.
Thank you in anticipation of a response.
-
Sorry, the surname Stringer does not appear in this book.
Regards,
flst.
-
Rena, I'm sure if Charles had been alive when the book was being compiled he would have been in this book. Sadly his widow is not mentioned. There is no mention of any of your Mc/Mackenzies either. As you say it is a common surname :)

Thank you so much for your quick response. It was a long shot, but when I saw your offer I couldn't resist asking, as I wondered how Isabella had managed to survive with a child and as she'd been a nurse at Hillhead hospital before marriage, I was curious about her situation. The Mc/Mackenzies were her cousins and knowing about any manufacturing company would have confirmed some vague information that I was given by one of my own cousins.
Once again - thank you, I'm much obliged.
-

Thanks for trying for me :D

Two clergymen related by marriage: John MacLennan and Finlay Macrae - do they appear ?
-
Hi,I'm sorry to say I could n't find any of them!
There are a few from Lanarkshire;
Paterson, James, M.B., Ch.B.(Glas.) Medical Practitioner, Sorelle Lodge, Benbecula, South Uist, Inverness -shire born 1890,Wishaw,Lanarkshire.
Hi flst,
Is there anything listed by James Paterson about Benbecula, South Uist where he was working please?
He was at Sorrelle Lodge from 1935 to 1942 according to UK & Ireland, Medical Directories.
If so, I would be very interested in any/all info. for that area.
Thanks,
Annie
-
roderickppaulin.
There are 2 John MacLennans, does your one have a middle name? If you can provide a little bit more information, year of birth or father's name, it'll save me time typing!
There is no mention of a Finlay Macrae.
flst
-
Rosinish, I have scanned the entire entry for James Paterson. I hope this extra information will be of interest to you.

Thank you flst,
Yes it's of great interest for sure. I was unaware he'd been a Surgeon at Bute Hospital, Daliburgh too which was later named Sacred Heart Hospital prior to it's closure.

The John MacLennan I refer to would have be born 1885
-
His father was an Alexander MacLennan but deceased by your time period I believe.
-
Sorry, the only John MacLennan, son of Alexander, was born 1871, in Kyle of Lochalsh.
