Title: Family Bible Found
Post by: Chris in 1066Land on Sunday 07 September 08 21:38 BST (UK)
Hi Yorkshire Genealogists

Whils browsing in a book store near Bristol, we came across a rather tatty bible; but,  on looking inside, we found 3 pages of a lovely hand written family tree of the PLEWS family

It begins with the following entry:-

HENRY PLEWS was the youngest son of THOMAS PLEWS, Farmer of Thornton Watlass, County of York

The above named HENRY PLEWS was married to ANNE TAYLOR of Kirby Hill or Ravensworth near Richmond at the Church of Kirby Hill on the 30th March 1796.

The final entry is:-

WALTER EDWARD PLEWS died at Bedale (of Apoplexy 28th April 1859) Monday 30th May 1859 at 7.30 pm aged 23 and was interred at Wartlass? Saturday 4th June. Grave immeadiately adjoining (on the right side) the late Jane Robinson

I photographed the 3 pages and would happily pass them on to an ancestor. Incidentally, the Bible was priced at £45

Hello Chris in 1066 land
How wonderful this information is.  I am a direct descendant of the Plews brewery dynasty, on my mothers side. She was Yvonne Mackay Plews.  Her father was Archibald Mackay Plews. His Father was Walter Edward Plews, selling the Leeming Bar site in 1925.
I am on holiday at present, but would be most grateful if you could forward me this information.
There is a gentleman in Bedale compiling a book, which is to include the Plews history.  He would be most interested in this documentation.
May i get in touch with you on my arrival home, next week
kindest regards
David Gordon-Russell.

Once you have made sufficient posts you will see under the name of the person who replies to your post a green scroll will appear.  If you click on that green scroll you can send them a personal  message (PM) which is private between you.  This is the recommended method of sending private details like email addresses which the moderators will delete from normal posts.

Rootschat is very conscious of the problems of spam which is one reason why this facilty is provided and also why it is restricted to genuine users after they have made a few posts.

The title of this thread attracted me - hoping it was MY family bible that Chris found. I live in hope.  ;)

This is a really good result so I hope it's OK if I tag along to see how the story ends.

Plewsbedale, welcome to rootschat! I see you live in Yorkshire - if you want to purchase the bible (I would!) perhaps if David Chris  remembers the name of the book shop, you could phone them and see if they will accept payment via credit card and post the bible to you?

Good luck!

Hi plewsbedale

No, we didnt purchase the Bible as it was of no interest to us other than we thought the information inside would be of benefit to some family historian - hence taking the photographs.

I can supply you with the name and address of the shop near Bristol and you can then contact them to see if it is still available.

I think you have to be careful here as if to much interest is shown in the bible - it could hype up the price which was a realistic £45 in August.

The Bible was rather large like those you find on a lecturn in the church, brown in colour, but the binding was a bit tatty

I am away on holiday from Fri 24th for 1 week (return Sunday 3rd Nov) in the peak district of Derbyshire (New Mills) and doing some of my own family history in nearby Macclesfield.

Cheers for now

ooops, sorry Chris ....

looks like plewsbedale might need a courier to deliver the bible. I think £45 sounds reasonable too.

I'd be thrilled if it was mine.  ;D

Hoping for a successful outcome.

Hi there,

I know this was an old post, but was wondering what the outcome was - it seemed so amazing!  I only found it when I was looking for information on Robinsons from Hull...  ;)

What a lovely thing to do Chris...How nice to see that someone has been able to beneft from your kindness 8)
I buy old photos and documnets with names on... then try to track down the relatives on the internet...very satisfying when it pays off.
The fun of this hobby is in the sharing.

I am researching my partners Plews family and this could help if you wouldn't mind sending me the images please? What a great find!! I am looking for Jane Plews b1811 and she could be on the next page to the one you showed.

Many thanks
