Title: Looking for John Fullagar
Post by: KPM on Tuesday 09 September 08 20:59 BST (UK)
Hi :D

Can anyone help me find the parents of my gr x 4 grandfather.  I have been searching for the last 4 years without luck but I'm not quite ready to give up.  Trouble is I don't know where to go from here.

I know that John Fullagar was born c1759.  He married in 1798 in Gravesend - I have a copy of the parish record and no clues on there.  He died in December 1829 in Frinstead.

I do know that there are a large number of 'Fullagars' in the Maidstone area but none that really match my John.  Even if I did find a match in 1759, how would I know he was mine?

The family did travel around a fair bit after he married and as I can't find his wife's baptism details either (only that she was born in Purfleet, Essex) I'm wondering whether they both came from out side of Kent.  They were a poor family so no Will was made.  I did find the Settlement certificate when they moved from Gravesend but no help there either.

Can anyone suggest anything else or could this be one I will have to admit defeat on :(

Any help would be very much appreciated

Hi.
I have a John Fullagar in my family tree-John Fullagar married a Sarah Pack nee Gore 1849,on the 1851 census it states he was born in Rainham Kent.
As my Pack family lived in Frinsted Kent there maybe a connection to your John Fullagar.
I have not research the Fullagar family as he was Sarah second husband and my line is from her first marriage to a Henry Pack, their daughter Amy was my GG-grandmother.

KPM, have you looked at the Bishops Transcripts for that area as sometimes the names appear on there and not on the Parish Records.  I have had a couple like that.  I also have a couple I cant find anywhere either!

Have you found them on the 1841 Census?  What was his wife's maiden name, do you know?

I guess the only other things I can think of is looking in the newspapers, poor law records, or if your family had a trade, they might be in the Trade books.

Can think of anything else right now.

Kind regards
Hoppity :)

Hi Jean and Hoppity

Thank you for your replies.

Jean - We have been in contact before, but I cant remember the connection :) James Fullagar (son of John) was married to Frances Pack - they both lived in Frinsted.  I did think that John could have been born in Frinsted as he moved there from Gravesend, but can't find any record of a baptism in the Parish Records.  Hope your own search is progressing well.

Hoppity - I found John's wife Elizabeth in the 1841 census (John died in 1829) living in Frinsted.  According to the 1851 census she was born in Purfleet but I have learned not to rely too much on this information from previous experience ;)  Elizabeth's maiden name was Strickland but I have had no luck in tracing her details.

The Bishops transcripts are certainly a good idea - I had assumed that this information would be the same as the Parish Records - so certainly worth a try.

John was an Ag lab so I don't think his profession will help much. However the poor law records could give me a little more information.  If John had a settlement cert when he moved to Frinsted, perhaps there is one in existence if he moved to Gravesend.

Thank you both for your input - I don't feel ready to admit defeat anymore ;D

Hi,

Just a thought but Woodchurch in Kent has a large number of Fullagars in their records and even have pictures etc in the Woodchurch museum. The do have a website with lots of searchable databases.

www.phone-pages.org.uk/wch/wmgr.htm is their website and it may be worth a try!

Thanks

Serena

Are there 2 Woodchurch sites?

http://www.goldbern.co.uk/woodchurch/index.htm

has quite a bit of info on the Fullager tomb and bequests.

Hi Serena and Bearkat

Thanks for your replies.

I have looked at both sites and they are really interesting.  I have found a possibility for my John Fullagar - certainly born around the same time but I still have no way of confirming this.

I will need a little more information and will definitely follow Hoppity's advice and start searching for Newspapers, Bishop's transcripts etc and hopefully I may be able to connect my relative to the Woodchurch Fullagars.

Its very frustrating because I'm convinced they are connected - just can't find the connection ???

Thanks again for all your help

Hi

This is my line too. I'm descended from John and Elizabeth's son John (1802-86).  I'm stuck in the same place. I did hear from somewhere that a vicar's wife had used the parish records to light the fire at some point, so there's no connection from our John back to the vast number of previous Fullagars elsewhere in Kent. Perhaps we'll never know....

Were you aware that both James and his son were transported to Tasmania? I have the details if you haven't.
