Title: Proposal for a central list of rootschatters FH websites
Post by: julianb on Thursday 11 September 08 20:47 BST (UK)
Given the lack of movement on a new server for the rootschat webspace, I have to assume that it is now unlikely, after 10 months, to be resuscitated. :(

There is a very helpful list of rootschat webspace sites here http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,23896.0.html.  Given the status of the rootschat webspace, that thread is now of only academic interest  ::)

I would like to start a thread listing rootschatters family history websites.  It was great to look at all the other sites people had put together on the rootschat space - I certainly found it inspirational in setting me on the path of building my own site.  I think we need a similar list to sustain that inspiration.  :)

Like the earlier thread run by Biker/Berlin-Bob, if you want your site listed, you just PM me and I will add it to the list.

I'd welcome support from a moderator to get it stickied so it remains visible.  :)

I won't start this until I get a few replies agreeing it's a good idea (or not, of course).

What do you think?

Perhaps I'll have to generate some then (in other words get on with my website) ;D ;D

Also advertising our websites in a more formal way might inspire some more rootschatters to join in and get websites of their own, I know that partly what inspired me in the first place

Julien,

I made a similar suggestion some time ago, but unlike you, received no response :-\

My site can be found at http://www.mosleyfamilies.net and I would be delighted to participate.

I'd also be happy to help moderate if you still need a hand.

Good to see RootsChatters taking the initiative!!

Definitely a good idea Julian - I wanted to pinch ideas see how other people had attacked their family history when I was working on the current version of my own site.

Here's the address: http://jeanmarc.vonallmen.club.fr/angloswiss/index.html

Annie - Honour Rolls get my vote if that counts.  ;)

I agree that a dedicated thread is a good idea. I think we all take inspiration from each other's websites.

Mine is http://freespace.virgin.net/nadine.mark  (however this may change when I move ISP but i'll be sure to let you know)

Annie
I think Rolls of Honour would be OK as it is a related subject.

Kerry/Gadget
I may be coming back to the NOF thread if I can't sort my current problem out, so watch that space.

Great to see all this interest.  :)

I'm waiting for Berlin-Bob to come back with the ok to go-ahead from the moderators (collectively, so to speak).  I've asked that the list be stickied on this board so that it is "visible" even when it hasn't been added to for a little while.

My original proposal was for "family history" "websites".

I think this means websites including those in blog format (but not message boards), and those sites that support family history research (not just the histories of families).

There's time before actually setting up the list to debate my "ruling" above (I'm not passionate about that interpretation, so I won't be upset if someone wants to put forward an alternative view).

I also have it in mind to include as the components of the list:

- the rootschatter's handle,
- the link to the site, and
- a brief statement about the site and any particular features eg  "ancestors, including trees and biographies, plus baptisms for Dunresearching parish church"

Again thoughts on this welcome too

[I was trying to work out how to use tables in a post - but can't get it to work.  Can anyone enlighten me on this?  ::) ]

Thanks again for your interest  :-*

Hi Julian  :)

Bob showed me how to do it when I ran those how many rootschatter threads but I've not got it on this machine.

However, if you go to this site:

http://www.rcmf.co.uk/4um/index.php?topic=13828.0;wap2

and scroll down to Tables, it gives you the code

It's best to do it in an HTML editor program first  - I remember that bit  ;D

Dear all

Thanks for your support.  I have now set up a list at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=336023.0.

I suggest keeping this thread open to discuss the list.  For example, I am open to further refinement of the list (having mastered simple tables in BBC code!), so this thread is the place to make any suggestions.

I think it should be stickied but why is it not in alpha order ;D ;D ;D

Now, would that be in alphabetical order by rootschatter handle or website title?  ;)

As it stands, it is in reverse order of nomination, ie latest nominees at the top.  So that means:

(a) old lags (you, me, kerry etc) remain at the end of the list  ;D

(b) future new additions will be at the top of the list

Need to think about this a bit more  ::)
Title: Re: Proposal for a central list of rootschatters FH websites
Post by: kerryb on Tuesday 21 October 08 19:43 BST (UK)
Not sure I like being referred to as an Old Lag  ::) ;D

Maybe its best just as it is so new additions are at the top, that's ways easier for you to add to, but either way someone will be happy and someone else won't.

Just comming up to the first anniversary of the disappearance of our web sites, this is an excellent initiative.  Rootschat was extremely helpful in getting me up and going.  Although now, most of us have moved on, this seems the most appropriate place to list our sites . . . even if this forum is still called "Free RootsChat Webspace"!

You could do worse than start here

Ignore the bits about free webspace as that no longer exists but the stuff about thinking about what you want for a website is good.

Hi again Lesanne

It really depends what it is you want from a website and that is probably the place to start, have a look round at other Rootschatters websites and see what you like about them and what you don't.

If you just want to show your family tree Tribal pages is a good idea as you load a gedcom and can add some text and some photos.

If you look at this link and go to No 4c it gives you a list of programmes that you can use to produce webpages.  Personally I am in the group that uses Net Object Fusion, costs a bit but is a good package and lots of help from other rootschatters

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,70811.0.html

I don't know which family tree software you use but some of them have a facility to produce webpages.  4a.

You also need a webspace, again these range from free to a bit of a cost, I plumped for 1&1 as did Gadget.  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,291125.0.html

There is a small monthly fee with 1&1 but they have a good reputation and it was easy to use.

But there again if you have no experience of websites a site like Tribal pages is a good starting point and its free and you don't need a programme to design your pages it does it all for you.

You'll end up getting hooked.  My website is an ongoing project for wet winter days and I think it will take me years to complete.

Start with a small idea though and let it grow from there, they seem to evolve as time goes by.

I did a course in website design with the Open University a couple of years back and the one thing that I learnt which is really good advice is to draw on paper exactly what you want each page to look like before you even start designing it.  I have found that to be very good advice.

I agree Willow and stated such on Saturday at the the top of the page   ;D ::)

I like the fact they worry about the template and I just picked the colou and put the text/photos in.  Made it easy and for a small charge you can increase the photos and they add some more functionality apparently.  I also really like the fact you can put a password on it so people can't automatically see your tree.

Like Kerry I too use Net Objects for my site. You can sometimes find freebies on magazine covers if you want to try them out.

I would also add that a lot of ISP's also offer some form of webspace nowadays.

Good luck and we'll all be waiting to see how you get on.

Mind you, we better not hijack this thread too much or we'll be in trouble  ;D  ;D
