Title: William Mander marriage in Dudley
Post by: woodjam on Friday 19 September 08 06:09 BST (UK)
Hi there. This is my first request after signing up a moment ago so apologies first if I muck this up.
I am looking for a marriage of a William Mander to a Susanna (surname unknown). All their children  were christened in St Thomas Dudley. The IGI has 12 children to them christened between 1815 and 1837. That's 22 years of childbearing? I have William and Susannah with birthdates around 1796. He was born Stratford upon Avon. Is this sufficient information for a lookup please?
Many thanks. woodjam

Welcome to rootschat woodjam!

You've asked a very good question and you didn't muck it up.  ;D

I've got a couple of questions:

Do you have the family in any censuses?
If so, do you know Susanna's place of birth?

As couples usually married in the bride's parish, if we know where she came from it may help the search.  ;)

Hi Ruskie.
That was quick. I thought everyone would be asleep over there at this time. (I'm in Australia)
I have William and Susannah in WOR 1841, age 45, she was born in the county. William wasn't. In 1851 I have them in village of Bromley, parish Kingswinford, age 56, she was born Dudley WOR and he Stratford upon Avon. In 1861 they're in the same place, Bromley Lane. She's now 68, born Dudley, WOR.
I'm still trying to get my head around parishes, townships, villages, districts and boroughs. But that question is for another day.
Hope this helps. Thanks for your reply.

Hi again woodjam!

If no one comes to your rescue, have you thought about ordering the film of the Dudley parish registers from the LDS Family History Centre (if you have one nearby) to look for the marriage?

PS. I'm in Australia too  ;).

Hi woodjam
Welcome.

     I've had alittle look on Familysearch.org for you, I traced seven children born 1815-1823 for William and Susanna at St. Thomas, Dudley, it also list some children for a Joseph Mander and Ann, could this be William's brother?
     If so I've traced a marriage for a Joseph Mander to Ann Gill 18th March 1811 Sedgley (this is very near to Dudley) using the batch no for this marriage there is also a marriage listed for a William Mander and Ann Dudley, 11th Sept. 1814 Sedgley,
 also another marriage listed for a Sarah Mander (sister maybe) to Edward Griffiths 11th August 1811 Sedgley
  could this be your line?

To Elaine and Ruskie, many thanks for your leads and research. That gives me more to go on. And I like a trip to Sydney now and then. Will check out an LDS centre closer to home as well.

I'n very grateful to all and glad that my first posting to this site was successful.

These people will do lookups for a fee:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/04ce/

http://worcestershire.whub.org.uk/home/wccindex/wcc-records.htm

http://uk-transcriptions.accessgenealogy.com/Worcs..htm (partial transcripts only)

It's always worth mentioning that you are in Australia when contacting Libraries and Record Offices in the UK. I've found them very helpful and small fees are often waived - it's probably not worth the trouble to convert small amounts of cash.

Good luck!

I have just had a look at woodjams info;

I think Susanna married as ANN;

Marriage;
11 Sep 1814, All Saints, Sedgley, Staffordshire
William MANDER to Ann DUDLEY
Witnesses Joseph Mander/John Newton
Bride and Joseph Mander both sign with a mark.
(FreeREG)

There Son Benjamin was Baptised 1837 Dudley but born 1835;
BENJAMIN DUDLEY Mander Birth 9 Nov 1835
(FreeREG and Anc)

SUSANNA Dudley Bapt 28 Sep 1794, St Thomas, Dudley, Worcs Parents BENJAMIN/HANNAH
(FreeREG)

The above info matches 1851 Census for Susannahs Manders pob.

Trish :)

trish1120, since we are on a roll, any guesses at the relationship between Zachariah and Daniel, Daniel's mother Sarah being the daughter of Robert & Elizabeth above.

County   Worcestershire
Place (link for place information)   Dudley
Church name   St Thomas
Register type   Unspecified
Baptism date   10 Feb 1811
Person forename   Zacheriah
Person sex   M
Father forename   Tho.s.
Father surname   MANDER
Mother forename   Sarah

I am convinced that Zachariah and Daniel (my ancestor) are related as the two baptised end up in Bury, Lancashire together and so do their families, and are witnesses at each other's events.

My problem is that I cannot find likely candidates for Thomas & Sarah, was perhaps Thomas a named father of an illegitimate Zachariah?

I have loads of info on the families - it's just Thomas & Sarah I can't identify, I have traced the Birmingham and Banbury ones and don't believe that is them.

I see the 1811 christenings on F/S but only Zacheriahs is on FreeREG.
Very confusing maybe the actual records need to be looked up?

Picked this up also;
Achsah MANDER
William DAVENPORT
Marriage 22 Oct 1809 Dudley

Daniel's baptism is on Freereg but with no surname.
I have asked for a lookup of the orginal PRs.
There were several other children from that family all ended up in Dudley.
I am updating them on my tree at Ancestry (username sharonbunter)
Thanks,
Sharon

I see Daniel married 3 times in Lancs 1830/1833/1855, no Father named on last Marriage.

Let us know the outcome of the look up :)
