Hi Everyone,
Was wondering if anyone had any information regarding the Blackdown House in West St Toowoomba, an ancestor is located there in 1925 working as a Cabinet Maker but I haven't been able to find anything about the actual residence
Cheers

Hi Cando,
Sent a message to the Local History Library and one of the ladies that work there has been kind enough to look into it for me, thankyou for your help.

Hi, I know it’s been ten years since your post, so this might not find you, however my father is looking into Blackdown House too, as he lived there in the late 60’s. He would appreciate any information that may have been found :)

Some information here:
http://downsfolk.wikidot.com/st-andrews-church-t
"SCOTS CHURCH (ORIGINALLY PART OF ST ANDREW’S)
In 1935 a branch Church, Scots Church (originally known as the Blackdown Church) was opened further South along West street from St Andrew’s. The name Blackdown originated from Blackdown House, on the corner of West and Stephen Streets, which was built for Baynes Bros, butchers , of Brisbane. It was later sold to W.Taylor and then again, in 1920, to storekeeper John Anderson (father of M.J.R. Anderson M.L.A.). There is some suggestion that the original name of the house was ‘Springlawn’."
Modified to add:
William BAYNES is described as "of Springlawn, Toowoomba" in 1886

There are quite a few mentions on Trove (https://trove.nla.gov.au) about Springlawn and William BAYNES, including this one which is an advertisement for the sale of a farm close to "Springlawn, the handsome residence of Wm Baynes, Esq., MLA" on Drayton Rd, which puts it in the right place near the corner of Stephen and West Sts.
