Hi steady  :)

Are you sure that he was b. c. 1820?  There is a family that looks like them in Armadale, Bathgate on the 1851: RD 662 ED 5 Page 5

Robert Lindsay, 30, shoemaker, b. Torphichen
Janet Forester Linday, 7, scholar, b. Torphichen
Agnes Lindsay, 4, scholar, b. Torphichen
William Storie, father in law,  61, shoe maker  b. Torphichen
Janet Storie,m in law,  58, b. Falkirk

Can't seen anyone else who fits  :-\

Very odd - I see  on the IGI that William Storie and Janet Hay were married in 1842  :-\

Have you got them separately on the 1841?

Freecen http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Will show them in Torphicen RD 671  ED  3 Page 4

William is shown as aged 23 and there are two Janet Hays in the household - aged 47 and 14. William is a Male Servant, so I don't know about the shoemaker*** one on the 1851 and 1861  :-\

Do you have any children for them that could be followed up?

Children showing on the IGI:

William - 1843
John - 1845
James - 1848
Robert - 1851 (also a bpt in 1850, so probably the first one died)

all b. Torphicen

I'll try with some of these names.

Hi

What I have found is that William died in 1891, Armadale, aged 71, married to Janet Hay. His parents are given as William Storie, shoemaker and Janet, m.s. Forrester , both deseased. Son Robet was the informant.

So the two entries that I first found in the 1851 and 1861 were William's parents  :D

There is a possible for Janet on the 1861 but I'm not sure why she would be there:

Dykehead, Slamannan, Stirling
RD 489 ED 4 Page 2

Janet Star or Stor, 34, Dress maker, b. Torphichen, Linlithgowshire

Added - they also seem to be living apart on the 1871.

Thankyou Gadget

I did know that Janet left William with the children from a great Aunt, I needed to know his birth place, thanks again for the help.

The Lindsay family mentioned above is my family.  My Robert Lindsay was married to Agnes Storrie and had 2 daughters with her.  She died at a young age.  He later married Janet McPhail.

If anyone is working on this family, I'd appreciate knowing about it!  I have a lot to share with anyone descended from this line!

Hi there,

I don't know if it's of any interest but on a download relating to a family member of mine from Torphichen I noted that, in 1764, John Storie and Margaret Hill had a child baptized named Margaret.

Happy to pass on the details if you want.

 William Storrie
1841 census - aged 23 worker on the farm of John Hay, Drumbowie, Torphichen. There he met his future wife Janet Hay then 14.
1851 census - aged 32, labourer, resident at Loanend, Torphichen with wife Janet24, William 7, John 5, James 3.
1861 census - aged 38? birth given as  c1823? No wife ( I believe she left him to look after his sons by himself). roadman,  Resident at Torphichen bridge Tole, with sons James 13, Robert 8, Peter 6.
His wife, Janet Hay was a distant cousin of mine.
Hope this helps.

Hi, I appreciate this is a very old post but I was wondering if you were still active on this thread please? I’m wondering if we have the same Janet Hay within our family 😊
