I am trying to put together a history of the Bugg family that lived in Dorset in the 19th Century. Anthony Bugg , born in the late 1700's married a Caroline and at some point lived as a farmer in Marnhull. His son and grandson, both called Anthony though his grandson was known as Anthony Samuel became farmers and lived in Marnhull and Stock Gaylard. Most of the family stayed in the area though Anthony Samuel's sons went to London and one of them finally settled in Sussex. Anyone knowing about this family or the area from which they originate please get in touch. Particularly if you know who was farming in the areas of Stourton Caundle, Stock Gaylard and Lydlinch during this time. Anthony, born in the 1700's was my great, great, great grandfather.

Hi Auch,
Do you know, have you tried the Dorset OPC site ?? www.dorset-opc.com
just putting "bugg caundle" and ""Find ALL words" in the search machine brought up 11 hits, including the 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 census from Marnhull, plus various marriages and baptisms.
Other combinations will probably bring up other hits. e.g. "anthony bugg"
e.g. Lydlinch Baptisms
293; 1834; ??-Sep; Harry; Anthony & Caroline; BUGG; Lydlinch; Labourer
and
189; 1828; 13-Jul; Elizabeth Hawkins daughter of; John & Mary; BUGG; Lydlinch; Farmer
There is also a Marnhull page: http://www.dorset-opc.com/Marnhull.htm
On this site, http://www.bakery.co.uk/sandd/sdnames.htm#cuff
Somerset and Dorset Surname Index, there is also somebody looking for BUGGs in Dorset, 1750-1824. Unfortunately he doesn't give a contact address, but perhaps you could contact him throught the site.
Hope this helps.

Anthony bugg married Caroline Lacey in stalbridge Dorset 6/10/1814. I found this in some Stabridge records on the internet. Search Bugg Stalbridge.
I am researching the Lacey family - Caroline was one of 12 children - her brother Joseph came to Australia in 1830 and my late husband ws a descendant of him.

Hi,
Frederick Bugg, born c. 1835 in Stalbridge married Ann Michinton, daughter of my ancestors Robert and Joanna Minchinton.
In the 1871 census they are all living in Church Farm, Purse Caundle.
I can't find Frederick's parents from the David Jeanes Transcriptions for Stalbridge, but there are a number of entries for other 'Bugg's. If you think you may have Stalbridge connections and would like anything specific looked up, I would be happy to check the transcriptions.

Hi,
IGI has:
Elizabeth Luffman, Baptism 29-10-1813, Caundle Stourton, parents John Luffman and Mary.
The 1841 Caundle Stourton census has the following entry:
76; CHURCH FARM; John LUFFMAN; 65; Farmer; N; F10p14
; Julia LUFFMAN; 25; Y; F10p14
; Frederick BUGG; 5; Y; F10p14
; Mary FINN; 60; F S; Y; F10p14
Could it be Elizabeth's Dad, perhaps sister and her eldest child (6yrs. on from her marriage)
Hope this is of interest,
Regards, Latina

I now have extensive information regarding the Bugg family descendants of Anthony and Caroline Bugg living in Lydlinch in 1841. I believe the family had connections with the Notley family through Sarah Notley, born mid 1700's and Silas Notley who farmed at Marnhull. Also the Lacey family from Caroline Lacey who lived at Stalbridge.
An article published in the Greenwood Tree by the SDFHS in May 2010 will be of interest to some who are researching Buggs in Dorset.

There is a definite connection between the Luffman and Notley families. John Luffman Notley was b1813 in Hayden Dorset son of William Notley and Mary Luffman; the family later migrated to Australia.
-
I am a descendant of Caroline Lacey's brother George, through his son Charles who emigrated in 1850 from Henstridge, Somerset to South Australia then Bendigo, Victoria.
In 1849 Anthony and Caroline occupied part of Marsh Farm in parish of Henstridge. [Sherborne Mercury 19 May 1849] also 1851 and 1861.
