Title: ** Completed ** Stradford Row
Post by: wizard1 on Sunday 28 September 08 23:42 BST (UK)
My grandfather was born in 1903.
On his birth cert his father's address is given as 8 Stradford Row.
I have found them both at a different address in the 1911 census.
In the 1911 census Stradford Row is listed but only shows No. 6 and No. 7.

I would be very grateful if someone could answere the following questions:

Where is/was Stradford Row?
What happened to No.8 Stradford Row between 1903 and 1911?

Peter.

Hello Peter,
I could find no Stradford Row but did find a Stratford Row.

The 1888 Dublin street index lists Stradford Row off Portland Row.
As of yet I can not explain what happened to no.8

Click the link below and it will take you to Live maps.
Stratford Row was located on Portland Row to Baileys Row.

You can also see information on it's location here

Hi Noel,

Many thanks for checking this out.

The link to the libraryireland site certainly puts it in the right area. The 1911 census shows the people I am looking for as living in Buckingham St.

Your link to 1862 lists numbers 1-7 as tenements and consequently no listing of people who lived there.

The mystery deepens! Where is number 8?

I'm beginning to wonder if it might have been a "mews" dwelling. i.e a stable that was roughly converted for human habitation? Although I thought mostly all of those disappeared by 1903.

Maybe tomorrow a ray of light will shine.

Peter.

On Google maps, Stratford Row is the continuation of Baileys Row running North East. On a Dublin City map of 1850s there only seems to be 5 house numbers on Stratford Row. On this map Baileys Row is written as 'Bailie's Row'

Baileys row is mentioned in connection with the WW2 North Strand bombing in a Dublin City Archives report article at : http://www.dublincity.ie/SiteCollectionDocuments/Public%20Libraries/HertHist/n_strand_bombing_archives.pdf

This report includes reference to photos of the damage and the area.

Thank you Shane.

Putting together the info from Google Maps, Live Maps and the 19th century directories, a picture is emerging of a "back street" or "lanes" area. This article gives a very good description of what life must have been like there:

http://www.ucd.ie/gsi/pdf/37-1/mews.pdf

The move to the tenement in Buckingham Street was probably a step up in the world, where the house was a solid structure, not surrounded and overshadowed by taller buildings.

I'll let you know if I can track down number 8 but at the moment I'm not hopeful.

Peter.

Hi Noel.

It was number 11. There were 25 people in the house in 8 family units, which seems fairly typical for the area.

Peter,

I don't know if you have them in the 1901 Dublin Census.

James Lawlor 7 Stradford Row

Taken from Dublin City 1901 Census Index to the North Strand, Clonliffe Road and Summerhill District.

Noel,

Do you have a screen shot of that?

Peter.

Hi,
Peter, i'm sorry but it only contains the head of households in most cases.

Good man Noel, you've found the answer to my question.

Not only does the birth cert have the wrong address, it also has the d.o.b out by one day.

He was born in a clinic at 2 Buckingham Street and the informant was an employee there, possibly a mid-wife. Her name was Catherine Ryland or Hyland.

I think that's everything I need to know on this question. Thanks to all who helped.

Peter.

I came across a map from 1829 at:
http://www.failteromhat.com/maps/dublincity1829.php

This shows Baily's Row continued on a south east course to join up with Belle Street (later I think it was called Empress Parade). There were 2 streets linking Baily's Row to the North Circular road, one of them is Stratford St., the other appears to be Washington St.

Easy to see now why Stratford disappeared.

Peter.
