Title: lanfyllin Workhouse,
Post by: foggyjano on Sunday 05 October 08 01:23 BST (UK)
Hi All

I have just discovered one of my ancestors was born in the Lanfyllin Workhouse in 1845, he is Timthoy Thomas and his mother was Hannah Thomas, looks like she had him out of wedlock
does anyone have any details of the workhouse in 1845 that might give me an idea why she had him in the work house..Hannah was born around 1826 Llandrinio, Montgomeryshire, Wales, her father was William Thomas married to Catherine Pyrce..

(gadget... I am getting closer to breaking down my brick wall.. Hannah Thomas is the sister of my missing Richard Thomas born 1817)

Thanks from Jan in cold, windy Manchester

Hi Jan  :)

Here are a couple of sites that might be of interest:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/mid/sites/history/pages/llanfyllin_workhouse.shtml

http://www.workhouses.org.uk/

If you go to this last site and enter Llanfyllin in the search bo, top left, it will give you various pieces of info.

My grandfather was born in Oswestry Workhouse in 1866. His mother was also unmarried. She would have gone there because she had no other financial support and/or her parents would not support her. It's all very sad and I still feel bitter about her family's treatment of her. She was then found in a Refuge for Fallen Women in the Midlands. My granddad stayed in the Oswestry Workhouse until he was 12.

Thanks for the info Gadget ;D

It is really interesting, i have been in touch with another thomas ancestor and we have discovered that our Thomas's actually married in to the Winnard family further down the branches as well as Noah marrying a winnard, so it is looking more likely that this new found Thomas's are either related or it is just a coincidence they are from the same area in wales, living in bilston and moving to manchester, then two different generations married into thesame family????

Off to investigate more..why dont they pick me for Who do you think you are..bet they would solve my brick walls for me..lol... :D
