Title: WILLIAM SARGENT (or similiar) from Ipswich
Post by: hmserge on Sunday 05 October 08 17:43 BST (UK)
Hello,

I am trying to find any information on the Surgen/Serjeant/Sargent (this is spelt many different ways) family from Ipswich.

(I think William Sargent was born around 1772 in Ipswich. )

I know William Surgen was born around 1794 and his father was also called William.  There is also an Ebenezer born 1826 and James born 1846.

I cannot seem to find anyone who is actually looking for the Serjeant's from Ipswich, so it's difficult to compare notes with anyone.

Any help/advice is appreciated.

Sergeant is my maiden name and so this name has always been of interest to me.

Does anyone know if there are any William Sargent's from Ipswich living in the 1770's or how I can find out?

Thank you

Heidi

Hi

I checked the Ipswich St Matthew registers for Surgun/Serjent etc.  I checked the baptisms from 1759 to 1786 but could not find a single mention of anything resembling Surgun.

The closest were Sharman and Seekamp  ??? ???

Sorry  :(

Thank you so much for taking the time to look Anne, much appreciated.  Maybe previous Surgun's/ Serjeant's had a baptism at another local Ipswich Church.

I am still on the trail of a William Sargent from Ipswich, Suffolk.

Is there anyone who knows how I could find out if there were any Sargent's in Ipswich in the 1770's?  Mainly a Willliam Sargent  (Serjeant is spelt many different ways).

I don't think that Serjeant would have been a popular name in Ipswich, so if there were any I would say they may have all been related?  But not sure.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks  :)

I know Bill Serjeant  ;D

Before retirement he was the county archivist for SRO.

He is now our Archivist at Suffolk Local History Council.

Sooooo, there must still be people with that name in the Ipswich area.

Hello Pat,

Thank you for replying.

The slhc site is very interesting.  I notice that there is a Ruth Serjeant listed too.

This is the closest that I've got to finding any Serjeant's in Ipswich, so that's one step forward.

Thank you for your help, this is much appreciated.

The 1841 Census - Globe Lane, St. Matthew, Ipswich shows:

William Sargeant    70     Lab.      born in county - Yes
Henry Sargeant      35     Painter           ditto

Ref. HO107 - 1043 - 13 - 32 - 19

From the NBI I noted that they both died in 1840's:

William Sergeant     83   bur. 7/11/1849 St. Matthew, Ipswich   i.e. bc.1766
Henry Sergeant       35 (?)  bur. 2/9/1844 St. Matthew, Ipswich

also noted:

Mary Sergeant    75   bur. 8/4/1839 St. Matthew, Ipswich   i.e. bc.1764

The IGI shows the following baptised at Dairy Lane Ind., Ipswich:

Mahalath Sergeant   b.22/10/1796 bp.20/11/1796 dau. William & Mary
                                 d.1797
Isaac Sergeant         b.7/2/1798, bp.11/3/1798 son of William & Mary
Lydia Sergeant         b.1/5/1801, bp.14/6/1801 dau. of William & Mary
Henry Vincent Sergeant b.17/10/1803, bp.13/11/1803 son William & Mary
Elizabeth Sergeant   b.7/12/1805, bp.12/1/1806, dau. of William & Mary

and following baptised at Tacket St. Ind., Ipswich:

Ebenezer Surjent  b.15/2/1808, bp.19/6/1808 son of William & Mary
James Surjent       b.15/9/1810, bp.21/10/1810 son of William & Mary

These seemed to be the only family in Ipswich at the time and would appear to be your William but apparently bc.1766.   From the above it would seem that the family were non-conformists which is maybe why you cannot find earlier records online.

Hi Annette,

Thank you so much for this information.

Could you give me more details of what a non-conformist is? (I have an idea), and  I was wondering how you could tell from the information?  Also if William Sargeant was a non-conformist in Ipswich, how would I be able to get more details of him eg: birth, is there a non-conformist site?

Thanks once again

Heidi  :)

Tacket Street Independent -
Congregational church

Dairy Lane Independent _
Baptist church

You can always check www.suffolkchurches.co.uk as Simon is still  adding more and more churches to the list and there are new ones on the Ipswich listings.  Simon lives and works in Ipswich and can answer queries regarding the churches and chapels via the website.

Tacket Street is probably the most famous of the Independent chapels in Ipswich.

Christ Church, Tacket Street - now (United Reformed/Baptist),
Built in 1857 as a Congregational church by
John Wight to the design of local architect F J Barnes.
Gothic style in Kentish ragstone, ashlar dressing.
Interior has large gallery, cast iron work and stained
glass east window.

As Dairy Lane was by St Margaret's Plain and is listed as a Baptist Chapel in Whites, I think today it has been replaced by

Bethesda Baptist chapel on St Margaret’s Plain
A classical style building by the architect F G Faunch.
Opened in 1913, it seats 800 and has a splendid gallery on
three sides providing the best view of the interior.

Thank you Pat, for details on the Churches.

Also it says William was buried at St Matthew's, how do I find out if he had a grave there?  or was the graveyard built over years ago?

Thank you

Heidi

Heidi,

I have been forwarded the email that you sent to Suffolk Local History Council  ::)

I hope to get to the office in Ipswich next week, but I will print your email and pop it in the post to Ruth and Bill.

Quite a few of the Committee are not very up on modern-ish technology!

As someone once remarked about us, you history people do like old things!

Hello Martin,

Thank you for reply.  It's nice to know that there is someone else who has the same ancestor as myself.  I don't think William Surgun will have been a common name and any information about the Serjeant family is great.  I would love to share my information about the Serjeant family with you.

I will PM you my email address.  It would be lovely to hear from you again.

My Martin/Hiedi

I am also related to this Serjeant line and have a tree on Ancestry.com. I would be interested in getting further details of your line and can share my wife's line though Hiedi may have already done this with you.

Hello Martin
Great to hear from you, I do hope you're doing okay and are well.
I haven't come across a Frederick William Serjeant from Stowmarket but I'll see what I can find out and let you know.
I'll also have a look for the copy of the family tree.  This was placed with my family documents a few years ago which could be boxed away in my loft.  I'll be in touch :)
Did you ever find anything more on William Surgun (Serjeant)?  I wonder if the Serjeant's originated from Suffolk or elsewhere?
Heidi

Thank you to you both, I will try to do the free family tree so I can look at your one.
As a matter of interest my Family lived in Auckland for a few years in the 1950s how unlikely is that.

Hi Martin and Craig,

(Hope you're both well).

I thought the name Frederick William rang a bell.   :). And that's great news.
