Can any one help us trace Patience Scamp who we think married John Eastwood around 1906. We believe that Patience was the daughter of Sidney J Scamp and have found her in the 1911 census. Noah and Jack Eastwood are the children of Patience and John Eastwood however no records appear to exist? ???

Hi zozo

I see Patience with her family in 1901 ...do you have that info?
Cannot see the family in 1891, yet.

Can you tell us when and where Noah and Jack were born. Where were they all living in 1911? What details do you have regarding Patience?

Any other details that you have may help us find them.

deb :)

SNAP! Catone ....thanks for posting the 1901 :)

Hi,

I too have Romany ancestors and I have received lots of help from the Romanygenes site http://romanygenes.webeden.co.uk/#/scamp-family/4528685510.  Lots of Scamp info here as well as photographes.  You can contact the authors with your queries and they are excellent at helping you out.

Hope this helps

Hi Shelly and Debs
Thanks for your prompt reply - tried the link you gave me several times but the page is not opening. Yes we have found Patience in 1901  listed with her parents Sidney J Scamp b 1860 in Gravesend and her brothers Gilderoy b 1883, Riley b 1885 and Noah b 1889.
We have no proof that the Patience who married John Eastwood b 1886 is Patience Scamp apart from the details match. Her birth place is copythorne, new forest  (3 miles from patience Scamp birthplace in 1901) and the years match of her birth. So based on a hunch and they are both travelling families
Jack was born 1907 and Noah 1910 in Ash, Farnham Surrey. We have also found Patience and John with their two sons in 1911 at a caravan nr Canister Cottage, PLumpton, Lewes, Sussex

hello all,

I am a distant scamp.

My grandad was son to Clara Scamp, she was daughter to Isabella (or Isabell) Scamp, and she was daughter to Samuel Scamp and Faith Gains.

Samuel and Faith had 2 sons die in the First World War, one is buried in Canterbury Cemetery and the other has no known grave.

Isabella had Clara at 16, we have no idea who the father is, she also had another daughter.

It would be great if any relations to these scamps could get in touch, there is quite a lot of them dotted around i think.  We should have a scamp Reunion.

Peace and hugs

Rachel.

Hopefully someone will pick this up. I requested a birth certificate of my great grandmothers brother Eddie Lee and found that his mother was Sabina Scamp. The only Sabina Scamp I can find was born in 1892, Seasalter Kent which sounds about right.. except it would make her 14 when she had her son.

So far I have found out that Sabina's parents were George Scamp b. 1872 Canterbury and Isabella. George's parents were Samson/Samuel and Faith.

Does anyone have any information on Sabina? She must have died young as she suddenly disappears after 1906 when Eddie is born...

She may or may not have married Ernest Lee (Eddie's father).

Hi all, since my last post I have done more research on my great great grandmother.

It turns out that Clara's mother was Esther Scamp, and gave birth to Clara when she was 18, only to die of TB 2 years later, at 20 Knott's Lane, Canterbury.

There is not father listed on the birth certificate.

Whilst doing this I found that 2 of Esther's brothers were killed in the First World War, one killed on the 20.10.1914 who has no know grave, but the second is more intriguing.

Samuel Scamp is buried in Canterbury Cemetery, having died in March 1915 but he was dismissed out of the army in the February before, but he has a CWGC headstone, I can't however find out the reason behind his death does anyone have any ideas?

Kindest regards to all my distant relatives xx

You would need to purchase Samuel Scamp's death certificate but I would be willing to guess that he died of war related injury (I would say possibly he contracted TB?? Did Esther Scamp live with him at all when he came home from WW1?). Why I say this a member of my family (Not a Scamp) was honoured with a WW1 CWWG he died of TB confirmed that he was infected with in the trenches in WW1.

The two brothers you speak of:

Private Alfred Riley Scamp Date of Birth: 1885 – Date of Death: 20/10/1914
British Army, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment), Service #L/8117, Faith Scamp nee Gambrill and Samuel Scamp

Private Samuel Scamp Date of Birth c 1877 - Date of Death: 20/03/195
British Army 4th Bn, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment, Service Number 2946, Faith Scamp nee Gambrill and Samuel Scamp of 49, Knott's Lane, Canterbury

Hello, I am working on my husbands family.  I have come across the Scamp surname but in records finding they are listed as Williams surname. Have no clue as to why that is. Here is some that I found.
I came across my husbands family listed on the website  Romany Genes at this link: http://romanygenes.com/scamp-family/4528685510
This tells of the Lee family and that Tom Lee married Selina Scamp. Ok, so in the 1881 Census for Pontypridd, Glamorganshire, Wales, they are listed as living with her parents Samuel Williams and Mary.  In Breconshire, Wales baptisma, 30 May 1852 is Celena Williams daughter of Samuel Williams and Piana Williams. In Beaufort, Monmouthshire, Wales is the son of Thomas Lee and Selina Lee named Seth Lee, 23 Apr 1882. The baptism of Seth Lee and wife Lucy Price is in Llangyfelach, Glamorganshire, Wales on 16 Aug 1910 named Frederick Lee.
When you look at the Romany Genes link site, they have the Lee family all coming from the Scamp surname and not Williams. Even Samuel Williams brother named Samson Williams is listed in the 1881 census in Neath, Glamorganshire, Wales as Williams. But again, on  the site he is listed as Scamp.

Hello,
Did you want to find out more family members going back from Oliver Scamp? I'm not sure what information you have on him, but I can write some here just in case you don't know any of this:

Oliver Scamp's birthday on his death record in 1977 was given as: 25th December 1905.
Oliver Scamp's baptism was on the 29th of January 1905 in Guston, Kent (so his birthday on his death record must be incorrect), on his baptism it says ''Born on christmas day 1904'', so they must have got the year confused on his death record. On his baptism, Oliver's parents were stated as: George and Isabella Scamp - ''Gipsys''.

I can't seem to find the family: George, Isabella and Oliver in the 1911 census but I can find George and Isabella in the 1901 census (obviously Oliver isn't on it because he was not born in 1901).

On the 1901 census George Scamp is 34 years old (born in 1867) and he is living ''on the borders of Trinley Park'' which is in Bridge, Kent. I don't know if this means they were living in a caravan or tent, as no street name is mentioned, just ''on the borders of''. Living with George is his wife - Isabella who is 32 years old (born in 1869). In 1901 they had 6 children: Sarah (12 years old), Sabina (9 years old), Esther (7 years old), Riley (5 years old), Henry (3 years old) and Noah (1 years old).

Again, I can't find the family in the 1891 census.
I think that George Scamp was the son of Riley and Sarah Scamp (George's birth year was probably not actually 1867 like he said on the census, if he was the son of Riley and Sarah Scamp his birth year would be around 1857. There are 2 other censuses that George Scamp is on if he is their son, however I can't be completely sure.

Sorry if you already knew all of this, I just thought i'd send it in case you didn't know  :)
I am related to quite a few Scamps - just quite a few generations back,

My great great granny Mary Ann clark married Samson Roberts.   Mary Ann’s mother was grace clark, no father shown on her marriage cert to James Clark.  I have a Dna match with so many people on ancestry and they are ALL saying that graces father was Gilderoy scamp! So Thrulines shows that now, because so many people have put it in their trees. If Gilderoy was graces father I don’t know why she went by the name clark and didn’t name him on her marriage cert, although she married her common law husband later in life Gilderoy was still alive. Anyway, just saying I’m potentially related to scamps too!

Do people think she was the Grace Scamp baptised in 1844 to Gilderoy and Catherine?
Interesting that she didn't mention him!
(I'm directly related to Gilderoy's sister Clarinda)

Yes I believe so , I have my grace as born 1847 but her birth wasn’t registered so it could have been 1844. Although I have Dna matches with everyone I’m just thinking they’re barking up the wrong tree putting Gilderoy as graces father.

Thank you for the information,

I do remember my Mum ‘Sylvia’ used to say that exact years of birth were sometimes not known with some family members, so thank you for your post i found what you wrote very interesting,

My Grandparents Oliver & Louise Scamp, their daughter Esther who died at 3 years old in 1949, her date of birth on her birth certificate is 23rd February, but on her gravestone her date of birth says 24th February,

When my Mum and her sisters used to meet up, over a meat pudding, they used to talk about their lives regarding travelling in the wagons, fruit picking, the haunted places they used to stop and stay at, they would chat for hours, i do miss them all,

I was told that my Grandparents were 1st cousins,
My Nans maiden name was Matthew, and on my Mums birth certificate it reads
Louise Scamp formally Matthew,

They did say that the Matthew’s had a fairground attraction,

I am interested in finding out more about the Matthew’s family as well, so if anybody knows anything more, please do leave a message on here,
