Title: Tranent Cemetery
Post by: elaineinUSA on Sunday 28 September 08 20:17 BST (UK)
The town cemetery in Tranent opened in 1905, does anyone know where people were buried before then.  I know there is the old Parish Church, but was there anywhere else. ?
Was there a Paupers field ?

Hi
There is a graveyard around the Parish Church in Tranent, as well as the new one. If you tell me who you are looking for I could look in the M.I. book for Tranent Churchyard.

i am looking for a great great gran and grandad who died in Tranent in 1898 and 1919.  they were catholics so i am not sure which graveyard they would have been buried in - the one in Tranent or the catholic one in Edinburgh.  is there any way to find out short of trailing along to Tranent and checking out the graveyards there stone by stone??  very grateful for any advice - Elizabeth

Hi
I would think being Catholic would not stop them being buried in Tranent. According to my Memorial Inscription book(for the Parish Church Yard), the large district cemetry was opened in 1920.
There is also the possibility that there are no gravestones. I have ancestors dying in Tranent, but no stones to mark the graves.
You could perhaps enquire with the local registrar, but I think this costs money now.

Hi Fiona

JOHNSTON is my important one however and several missing links which burial records could confirm.   Family Born in both Tranent and Prestonpans. I have checked PrestonKirk and none so far link. Hoping to find elsewhere.
William JOHNSTON m Janet FORMAN born c 1730s.
Children James b1761, George b 1763, Jean 1765, Mary 1768, William 1774, Charlotte Hope, 1777.
Possible of course they moved out of area as did my Charles b 1777.

Hi Everyone,
I did try the MI for the Parish Church, but couldn't find anything  I even walked round the churchyard  (there are a lot of unmarked graves  though)   I was looking for some Stevensons and  a Mary (Muir ) Benn who died 1905, I did find Stevensons, but not the ones I was looking for.
I wonder if there is a list anywhere of the unmarked graves.
There is a small cemetery in Elphinstone, but not sure where it is.
Anything in the town cemetery (after 1905) the Tranent town office has a list and is very helpful.
The Haddington history museum has a list for the Gladsmuir Church.

Hi There,
Elphinstone cemetry is down the side of the village school.  It is a small path with limited parking at the top.  Make sure that you can your car.... it is narrow.  Walk down about 500 yards and it is on the right hand side.  When I looked a few weeks ago a lot of the stones had been laid flat, most with the inscriptions down. You also need to ook at the bushes as there are headstones in them.

Happy hunting, take care,
regards,
Lynda

Fiona, If you are still able and willing to look for MIs in Tranent and other western parishes of East Lothian, I would be very grateful to know if there are any Herriot, Whitecross or Watt entries. My G.G.G. grandfather John Herriot was a servant at Taylors Mains (which seems to be at the location shown as Seton West Mains on modern maps) in Tranent. Later he was a grocer in Prestonpans. The Whitecross and Watt families lived in Tranent and other nearby parishes, although earlier Whitecross ancestors apparently came from further east (Haddington, North Berwick, etc.). Many thanks,   Bob

Thanks so much Fiona,
this is indeed our ancestors.  Our George is the one who died in 1904  Melbourne.  His brother James must have visited them or traveled with them so now I will check the passenger lists again.  They arrived in Melbourne January 1st 1855, with a 3 day old baby who was the next generations George!!
There is such  a lot of detail about the family here and as I had census details about their whereabouts and livelihoods this adds to the picture I had of the family.
I have a photo of the Marion Bowman mentioned.  She is the Mrs Forman of the current Mrs Forman's Inn at Inveresk.
I had no idea where they might have been buried and as we are in Australia hadn't thought it would be likely I would ever find out.
What a super site this is. If I can be of any help to anyone researching I am happy to try.  You are Marvellous . S

I await you photographic endevours, best wishes

Mrs Foreman died in 1888, and as far as I can see her daugther Bethia died in 1/10/1907 at Levenhall.  As Levenhall was the area around the public house, I assume that she may have been the last Foreman to have lived there....however, I am sure that someone out there may know

Title: Re: Tranent Cemetery
Post by: the landlord on Tuesday 16 February 10 23:39 GMT (UK)
Hi Lynda

Thank you I know the site well, the Formans had 4 daughters and 4 sons; Bethia was there youngest daughter at the time of the 1841 census she was 3 years old. however i have feel it stayed in Forman ownership (landlord) after Bethia death but with somone else (tenant) at the helm Here's what i have so far....

In the early 1820’s with its race course and the increasing patronage of the finest golf clubs and societies of the day, Musselburgh Links was becoming a very busy place. In 1822 George Forman a young man from near by Prestonpans purchased a piece of land on the edge of the Links that neighboured Blucher Hall. On his newly acquired land, the shrewd George built a public house to provide refreshments to those enjoying the Links.

In the summer of 1826 George took a wife, marrying Marion Bowman at Duddingstone, Edinburgh; it is this Mrs Forman from which the pub is to take its name. Together they made a great success of the Links side business with the little pub becoming famous for its window, through which it served the needs of thirsty golfers. The marriage proved to be a success on all fronts; fifteen years later the 1841 census shows the Forman’s had eight children, four boys and four girls; the youngest being one year old Charles and the eldest fourteen year old George Jnr, already apprenticed to a cabinetmaker.

Just two years later in 1843 George died at the age of 41, leaving his wife Marion with eight children and a pub to look after. It’s likely at this point the pub would have become known as Mrs Forman’s; before George’s death it may have been known simply as Forman’s.

In 1888 aged 83 Marion Forman died leaving her children to take over the running of the pub where it remained in their care well into the following century. With over sixty years at the bar and with the help of her family, Marion Forman unknowingly put her pub into the history books as one of the most famous buildings in the game of golf.

Since opening its doors in 1822, Mrs Forman’s went onto serve without bias both Lord and Caddie and welcomed some of the greatest champions in the game of golf, Willie Park Snr and Jnr, Young and Old Tom Morris, Harry Vardon and Bobby Jones to name but a very few.  If walls could talk!

If you can add to this or spot any mistakes could you let me know

Thank you

John

Could you be more specific on names, especially forenames, as Anderson's were quiet common in East Lothian.

Hi Sharkman

Sorry, none of those names mentioned in the MI book, doesn't mean they are not buried there, just no Headstones. May be that the Headstone was illegible at time of survey, or there never was a Headstone.

Happy Hunting anyway

Hi Sue,

Lillias Blyth is also my husband's GGG Grandmother. I'm happy to exchange the information I have.

Clare

Lynda, a photograph would be fantastic.  I was reluctant to even ask if anyone could see if it was still standing.  We did a Google search and there is a photo of the inn on a list of restaurants and pubs in the Inveresk area.  We also have one about circa 1924.  I also have a photo of this Mrs Forman nee Marion Bowman.

I notice you have Blyth listed in you family  list.  I have a GGG grandmother a Lilias Blyth daughter of James Blyth sailor, and Agnes Lownie of Newburgh, Fife. Is there any connection?

I await you photographic endevours, best wishes
Sue

Hi ,
Unfortunately your Blyths are not the same as our Blyths.  Ours are David Blyth and hail from leith....master bakers and metal workers I think.... however I do think that they may have originated from Fife before 1800 but not taken them back that far as yet...always getting led into something else....

Hi Caraid,

Thanks for the information.   I am almost certain that the Sophia Craise mentioned is the niece of my 3x great Grandmother Agnes Craise. Agnes had a brother George who was born in Gifford and who married Elizabeth Hood. in Gifford.  They had a daughter, Sophia, who was born about 1825 and would therefore have been about forty in the 1860s when Alex Grieve might well have been about the same age judging by the information on the MI.   I will have a look on ScotlandsPeople for the marriage post 1862.   George and Elizabeth are on the 1841 and 1851 Census returns for Tranent.   Sophia had a brother George, born 1833 in Tranent and he appears there in the 1881 census.

I had not done much with this branch of the Craise family but will now hopefully go and fill in the missing pieces.   Ever the optimist.

Thanks again.

Hi Caraid

Yes Sophia in the Craise family goes back to a Sophia Fleming of Haddington, born 1720.   She married George Black and one of their daughters, Sophia Black, subsequently married James Craise of Yester.   This union spawned Craise children  with most of the siblings continuing the Sophia name for the next generations. The name continued for daughters in marriages such as into Purves.  It has been a very useful marker.

Thanks for the MIs although  I had previously found these on the net.  As for Gifford I have transcribed the Craises from the actual headstones where legible.  I have found the study of my Craise line keeps throwing up unexpected links to other bits of the family.

I have now found the marriage of Sophia Craise to Alexander Grieve in SP.    They married in Tranent in 1864. I also found that she was born in Longformacus, Berwickshire as shown in the 1861 Census.

Hi Caraid,

I maybe should have mentioned that Craise is sometimes spelled differently, for example as Crease, Crais, Craes or other variations.   In fact the Tranent family is spelled as Crease in the 1861 Census.

I would like to know if someone can help me find out if someone is buried in Tranent Cemetery.
The name is Mary Cullen and her date of death is 18/5/1899. Her husband was Owen Cullen, and her father was James McGowan and her mother was Mary nee Confrey/Conifrey. I believe the church may have been that of St. Martins of Tours.
It may be probable that there is no headstone, but if I can find out for definite that she is buried in there it would be a great help.
Thanks for any help.

hi lyndyloo6,
I believe if any Cullens are in a graveyard, it would be the one that is not attached to  the Church of Scotland , as they were Catholics, I spoke to the beadle of the church there, and he said to go to the cemetery at the bottom of the road, and then round the roundabout, if you know what I mean, I did that and went into the cemetery, but due to ill - health, I wasn't able to go round the whole place, and then again, there may not be a headstone, which is why I would like to know if they would have a register of burials in the churchyard.
Thanks once again for your help, hope to hear more from you

I have the East Lothian Monumental Inscriptions, Westermost parishes (Tranent, Seton, Prestonpans, Prestonpans West & Ormiston Old Churchyard) The Inscriptions for Tranent Parish Churchyard were listed in June 2005.
There are no Dodds or Skeldons listed but quiet a few Johnstones. If you could give me a few more details I'll look.
East Lothian Monumental Inscriptions, Hillfoot Vilages (Garvald, Innerwick, Moreham, Oldhamstocks, Spott, Stenton, Whittinghame & yester) does have some Skeldons & Dod(d)s. Again if you have more specific names I will Look.

Hello Caraid
I have just joined Rootschat so am new to the experience!  I am struggling with my Smiths of Tranent.
I have just scrawled down on the thread of Tranent Cemetery and can see how helpful you have been to a lot of people, so I wondered if you can give me any help.
My 3xgreat grandmother Isabella died between 1861/71 and her husband William who was a shoemaker of High St, Tranent died between 1881/91.
Isabella's family name was Gavine according to her parish marriage entry.  Are there any Gavines in the churchyard or cemetery I wonder.
I am keen to follow up on the Gavine name as it has been handed down in the family as a middle name. I don't know if they were Tranent people, but Isabella's father was a miller at Brunslain or Brunstain Mill.
Any little info you can give me would be wonderful.

Hi Fiona
I would appreciate it if you would look for my ancestor Stephen BROTHERSTONE in the Tranent Cemetery MIs.  He died on 29 Aug 1797 in the massacre.  His wife's name was Margaret THOMSON.  Perhaps she is also buried there after this date.  Two of their children were Betty (b1778) and John (b 1780) who I don't have any other info on.

Gavines

Rindercella - No matching names, don't know when the last burials were at old Churchyard, but the large district churchyard was opened in 1920.

Lous_Moon - No mention of a gravestone, just a listing in the Notes at end of book.

Thank you for looking for the Smiths in the cemetery.  They were definitely resident in Tranent in the censuses on High Street, and after Isabella died William was still resident there with his spinster daughter Margaret until the 1881 census then I couldn't find him on the 1891.
So I wonder where they were buried.

I didn't hold out much hope for the Gavines, I can't trace them at all.  Just father on Isabella's (the daughter of Isabella and William) wedding cert at Tranent who was down just as .....Gavine, miller at Bruslain Mill.

Thank you once again.

Hi

No Margaret Thomson listed neither, apart from OPR's or Church Records I don't know how you will go about proving they are yours.

Some of my Husbands families were living in Tranent & surrounding areas, but very few seem to have Stones. Lots of people were buried in graveyards but could not afford memorials, which makes it harder for us to find them,

Could you let me know a bit more about your Margaret Hay?  I also have a Margaret Hay (1817-1887) who married Alexander MacKenzie (1815-1891).  They were married in Kilfinan, Argyll, Scotland, but I believe from what my great grandmother told me, she was born in Hopeman, Moray, Scotland.  However, my MacKenzie family was from the Tranent and North Berwick areas so I am not sure.  I am confident of the marriage date and location as Alexander was a gardener and traveled extensively.

I saw your post about your great-grandfather John Henderson being killed in a mining accidsnt in 1898.

I was just wondering if you've seen the Scottish Mining website which has an index of mining accidents.  Your great-grandfather is listed, with a description of the accident.  Just do a Google search for "Scottish Mining" and you'll find the site.

I don't know if this thread is still active, but I am wondering if anyone can find a grave for my great aunt Noeleen Elizabeth Patterson who I think died in 1989 in Tranent.  She was in her 90's and single and I think she had lived there for some time so my feeling is that she would have been quite a local character.
If anyone can suggest where I might search for an obituary I would also be very grateful.

Could I possibly see a copy of that photo of Marion? Is it the same one used on this website? - http://www.scottishgolfhistory.org/news/mrs-formans-is-no-more/

I have an oil painting of an old lady in her 70/80's by the painter Robert Gemmell Hutchison (Mrs Formans son in law) and I am trying to rule out Mrs Marion Forman as the sitter. It might also be of her sister Margaret Bowman (Born circa 1815 in Portobello) about whom I know nothing or possibly Marion's daughter Mary born around 1836 whom I also know nothing about.

Any help would be appreciated.
