Andrew HENDERSON is listed as the father to my ggggrandfather, James Cunningham HENDERSON. James was born on 1/8/1813 @ PARTON, baptised 15/8/1813. His mother is listed as Agnes CUNNINGHAM. I am able to trace her family to the CUNNINGHAM & LOCK families in the parish of PARTON but I cannot find anthing on Andrew. Any suggestions please?

I've not found anything except a big gap in the parton marriage registers from 1784-1832. So you are unlikely to find their marriage.
I cant find much for Hendersons let alone an Andrew.
I keep coming up against this in other parishes and its very frustrating :(
Best bet is looking up the MIs; maybe you will get lucky. I don't have the Parton one, but if you ask Gadget nicely she may oblige :)
I know this wasn't much help, but thought I would let you know that people had probably looked and drawn a blank also.

Welcome to Rootschat, Hendo :)
Gadget will look at the MIs shortly.
The lack of Parton marriage entries for those years is one of my sadnesses too. With them, I'm sure I could find the necessary holes in my walls - nothing in the Kirk Sessions Minutes either :'(
:)

There's nothing in the MIs for Parton.
Some thoughts - have you looked at neighbouring parishes? Some of my family moved from Kells to Balmaclellan and then Parton in the 1800-1830 period.

Thankyou Gadget & Sparkle
I will follow your advice re the neighbouring parishes, although previous searches on scotlandspeople have included all counties & parishes. Thanks also for the WIGTOWN & KIRKCUDBRIGHT map. As an after thought, Andrew's son James (and his son George) was a houses painter in CASTLE DOUGLAS. I wonder if there is a link with the trade? I'll keep looking!

I'll check tomorrow in some of the other parishes MIs for you - there might be something :-\
Castle Douglas (Kelton) is not far away at all - 10 mins by car nowadays :)

No mention of Andrew :-\

Hi Gadget
What's the old saying "been there, done that, got the tee shirt!" Thanks for trying, but another lass had the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright Monumental Inscriptions Pre 1855 Vol 3 and passed on that info to me. At least it tied in Agnes HENDERSON (nee CUNNINGHAM) to James. I don't think that I'm going to finds his dad (Andrew)! We are off to CAIRNS and PORT DOUGLAS in the morning so I had best get some 'shut eye'! It's a 2 hr drive, then 2 hr flight and then 1 hr drive. I'll log back on when we get home. Thanks for all your help. You've given me a reason to keep looking.

Hi Gadget
Well the holiday in the sun was fantastic (dived on the Great Barrier Reef). Now I am recharged and ready to take on the 'brickwall' again.
This is a little more of the evidence that I have found re Agnes HENDERSON's ancestory. Firstly her death registration lists her parents as James CUNNINGHAM (Trimmer or Joiner, not sure) & Agnes CUNNINGHAM, Maiden Name Lock(e) (statutory deaths 869/00 0030). It lists her age as 84 years and dying of senile decay, with no medical attendant. I have attached a copy. I didn't find a birth record for Agnes in 1776/7 but did find an Agnes CUNINGHAME born (28/4/1781) to James CUNINGHAME of LITTLE MOCHRUM. I also found a marriage reg (17/6/1780) for James CUNINGHAME in LITTLE MOCHRUM & Agnes LOCK in over IRONMANNOCH, after due proclomation married at IRONMANNOCH (OPR Births 878/0010 0009 Parton - attached also). I also have a birth reg (28/3/1751) for Agnes, daughter to Nathanial LOCK, baptised at ??Bominsland (can't make it out) and on the same extract, 17/7/1752, James, Son to James CUNNINGHAME, Baptised at UPPER AUCHENVEY (with Newstile follows written under the entry). I hope this makes sense. What do you think of my detective work? Do you agree with my conclusion that James got his mother's age wrong on the death certificate. It sounds like she died at home and he registered the death with the registrar, John JOHNSTONE at RHONEHOUSE.
I eagerly await your opinion.
Regards

Hi Hendo
I've PMed you my e-mail so that you can send me the necessary documentation and I'll look at it carefully. It does look as if the son got the ages wrong, doesn't it.

Hi Hendo
I've been through all the documents that you sent me and I think you look as if you are on the right track :)
Also, I've checked up Agnes on the 1841 and 1851 censuses and her age on both suggests a birth date of 1781-82 which fits with the baptism.
In 1841 she was 55-59
In 1851,she was 69.
I think James appears to have got her age a few years out.

I suppose that after a while you start doubting your own logic. Thanks for reaffirming my faith in my own ability. I was starting to think that I would never be able to say (with any certainty) that I had discovered James' mother's line. Thank you for your vote of confidence. I don't know where I can go from here to establish James' ancestors! What do you think?

I did have a good look for an Andrew Henderson. I recall seeing a baptism in 1771 in Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfriesshire. It might be worth following that one up.
The problem is that som many records are missing for various reasons that it's difficult to follow all the possibles to eliminate or keep pencilled in.
I would suggest the Kirk Session Minutes but it's not easy from Australia. I'll PM you the address of someone who has the Parton ones and might know of Andrew.

Hi Gadget
I downloaded the Birth reg for Andrew HENDERSON (10/2/1771) at KIRKPATRICK JUXTA (DUMFRIES) to James HENDERSON in HOLMSHAW. Will try to locate HOLMSHAW on one of the maps I have. Thanks for the referral to Sam. I will put pen to paper (ASAP). Would he have an email address?

I'm not sure of an e-mail. I didn't see a computer when I visited him a few years ago and then we communicated via snail. The link I gave did have a phone number.
He's a really lovely man :D

Hi 'Gadget'
Still haven't heard a peep from Sam. I might have to try another avenue. Just don't know what to try next. Maybe a submission to a newspaper or magazine. Can you suggest another option, Gadget?
Cheers

Hi
Don't know if you are still on this ,quite a few years ago on the posts.
I noticed you doing the Cunningham/Henderson families. I am trying to research those families too. My father was Robert Alexander Henderson His father was John J Henderson and his mother was Thomasina Cunningham Robert's dates are 1924-2003. Thomasina was born in 1901 and died around 1986. John died about 1975. Dont suppose these ring any bells. Come to a lot of dead ends being there are so many Cunninghams and Hendersons.
Sharon.

Hi sharona
Just popped on to refresh on previous research & noticed your posting. My Agnes CUNNINGHAM was born in 1781 to James CUNNIGHAM & Agnes LOCK of LITTLE MOCHRUM (parish of PARTON). She married Andrew HENDERSON and had James Cunningham HENDERSON in 1813 in PARTON. James married Jane McKNAUGHT and she had George Cunningham HENDERSON in 1840 in CASTLE DOUGLAS, parish of KELTON. George was my gggrandfather and emigrated to VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA in 1861. I haven't come across the name Thomasina in my research. Did your ancestors emigrate to AUSTRALIA?
