If you are in the area, then a look at old maps in the reference library should show development of the site.

Hi Donna,

My gt grandfather Louis Henry PALMER had an engineering business in Chase Street and all his brothers lived in and around Chase Street & Bedford Street, also involved with engineering, traction engines and threshing machines.

I'm talking about 1883 upto early 1920s or so.  I never visited the houses; I got the information from census and family records and what my mother told me as she remembers visiting her grandmother, Kate PALMER, in Chase Street.

p.s.  And their parents, Emmanuel & Susannah PALMER lived in Silver Street.

Hi Donna

here is a map of the area in 1888

http://www.british-history.ac.uk/mapsheet.aspx?compid=55129&sheetid=5698&ox=1585&oy=385&zm=1&czm=1&x=596&y=209

I do have an old map of about 1901, will have to try and find it, as I live just outside Wisbech

regards

Yes, that's my gt grandfather, Louis Henry PALMER in the photo  :)

I found a copy in my mother's effects after she died last year.

The Louis Henry in the 1940 trade directory is his nephew - most of the PALMERs were engineers, and similar names were used throughout a VERY large family over 4-5 generations  ;D

Many thanks for posting this.

Regards,  Ann.
