Title: William O'Grady, b1888, Co. Cork
Post by: michaelOGrady on Tuesday 21 October 08 15:25 BST (UK)
Hi there
I'm totally new to this, so hope I'm posting in right place.   ???
My great grandfather, William O'Grady, was born in 1888 (apparently Co. Cork) and had a deceased father called John at the time of William's marriage in 1908. Neither appear in UK bmd or census records before 1908 (that I can find). Williams death information (1914) states he was in the Irish Regiment and was from Co. Cork.
Can anyone help me make a start on this please?  :)
I'm coming to Dublin for the weekend in 3 weeks time but I don't believe the Dublin GRO office is open on a weekend.
Thanks for any help and direction you give me.
Michael O'Grady

William's birth certificate will list his exact date and place of birth as well as names of both parents.

Thanks agahdowey
I guess I have to assume there is only one William with father (John) born in 1888. Is there any way of narrowing it down and stopping the possibility of having to buy several certificates in order to get the one I want? Or do I just trust, pay and have a look at what comes back?
Thanks for your time, Michael    :)

Not really. I suppose you don't know of any siblings for William?

Hi
Only things I know about him are: born 1888, married 1908 (Huddersfield), marriage certificate states father is John (Seaman, deceased ), died 1914. I'll get the death certificate today and find out a little more. There is a strong possibility that he was killed in 1914 and was a Private in the Irish Regiment. WIll know shortly.
Cheers, Michael

If he was killed in WWI the death certificate will not give much information and will not lists parents' names, birthdate and place, etc.

Michael,

There are a few William O'Gradys on the WW1 casualty site, but this one seems to fit the bill and is the only one who is both in the Royal Irish Regiment and was also killed in 1914:
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=1560089

There is no detail of his parents or home town, but if you place a look-up request on the Armed Forces forum on this site for a search on Soldiers Died in the Great War, there is often more info.

Good luck!

Thanks Leofric
I'll have a look around the site. Many thanks for the advice. I think I'm in for the long haul on this one as he just appears and then disappears.
Thanks, Michael    :)

Found a John O'Grady married a Marcella Bennett in Dublin 2nd Feb 1894. John's father was also called John. Marcella's father Laurance. John's address 3 Bow St Dublin. Marcella's is 1 Marlboro St. This same John died in 1914 in Dublin aged 43. Hope this is of use. Except John's wife is from cork he seems to be from Dublin?
