Hi I am looking for the family of George Henry Ballantyne b Yarrow Scotland
24 August 1855, I have had no luck on Ancestory. and hoped somewhere out there would know this family.
-
Hi
And welcome to Rootschat :D
Ancestry doesn't have any of the Scottish births. These are indexed and the images are available on the Scotlands People site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. It's pay to view but very reasonable. Many are also listed on the IGI www.familysearch.org
Your George is on both of them in Yarrow, Selkirkshire. Parents are Francis Ballantyne and Janet Douglas.
As it is an 1855 birth, the certificate from Scotlands People gives far more information than normal - origin and age of parents; how many previous children born to them, etc. and for 6 credits (equivalent of £1.20) you can view and download this.

At the moment, I can't find the family in either Scotland or England on the 1861 census. Did they emigrate?

I think this is the family in 1851. Margaret must have died between then and 1855 and Francis married Janet Douglas. Note that it was not uncommon for women to use their maiden surnames:
Shielswood, Ashkirk, Roxburgh
Parish 781 ED 1 Page 5
Francis Ballantyne, 35, farm labourer, b. Castleton*, Rox
Margaret Archbald, 32, labourer's wife, b. Eckford, Rox
Janet, 11, b. Jedburgh
John, 9, b. Jedburgh
Mary, 6, b. Hobkirk
James, 4, b. Hobkirk
Margaret, 1, b. Ashkirk

*added - Newcastleton on George's birth cert.
-
Hi again
Because I could find no trace of a marriage or any census details for 1861 for this family, I checked the birth cert. No marriage date is given for Francis and Janet and no details of previous children. Neither can I find a death registration for Francis/Frank that matches his details.

Hi Gadget, Thank you so very much for jumping onto this, I am gobsmacked. Does all this info come from Scotlands people. I have been reluctant to join yet another paying group, It seems that my ancestors are a particularly difficult lot and finding the thread of them again before they migrated to either Australia or N Zealand is proving brain sapping. ;D 8)
-
Do you have any info about when the migrated and if George was married - children, etc. Anything that might help search for them?
I PMed you about the birth cert.

This looks like Francis Ballantyne's baptism:
17 July 1814, Castleton, Roxburgh Francis s/o John Ballantyne and Mary Miller
This is from the Scotlands People site that I mentioend before.

George Henry Ballantyne was second son of Jessie Douglas who was the second wife of John Douglas Francis Ballantyne (called Francis). John Douglas Francis Ballantyne married three times, firstly to Margaret Francis Archibald in approx 1838/39.
Their children were
Jessie born in Ulston 1840
John born Ulston 15/10/1842
James Archibald born in Hobkirk 1847
Mary born in Hobkirk in 1845
Margaret born Ashkirk in 1850
Mary Ann born in Ashkirk 25/9/1852 (my connection)
Margaret Francis Archibald died in Ashkirk in 1852 and John Married Jessie Douglas on 1/5/1857.
Obviously they had had their first child in 1855, namely Thomas Scott . Incidentally Thomas Scott Ballantyne must have been named after Captain Thomas Scott who John Douglas Francis Ballantyne worked for at Ashkirk and then at Bengerburn. There is quite a story about Captain Thomas Scott who married John Douglas Francis Ballantyne's sister Margaret in 1856.
Other children by Jessie Douglas were
George
Isabella
Sadly Jessie Douglas who was born in New Castleton, died on board ship as they were travelling up the estuary to Dunedin harbour.
John married thirdly Elizabeth Aitcheson born Bannockburn in about 1836. Their children were
Agnes born Dunedin 1864
Frank born Dunedin 1866
Simon born Dunedin 1868
William born Dunedin 1870
John Douglas Francis Ballantyne farmed around Dunedin all his life but died at his son's home in Dunrobin, Otago, NZ on 12/9/1901 and is buried at Crookson Cemetary.
John Douglas Francis Ballantyne's parents were John Ballantyne and Mary Miller who were married about 1810/11. John Ballantyne's parents were Francis Ballantyne and Margaret Robson.
Have more information if you are interested.
I presume you live in NZ as I do so maybe we could make more direct contact

Further to my last message, I forgot to mention that John Douglas Francis Ballantyne and Jessie Douglas emigrated to Dunedin, New Zealand, together with all their children to that date, on the Henrietta - the voyage taking from 30 May to 24 September 1860. He is recorded as Assisted Emigrants with wife, 4 sons and 5 daughters.

Hi Ngaio,
Our documentation differs slightly, I have George first in 1855, to Jannet then
Isabel 1857
Thomas Scott 1859 both to Jessie.
Is there something I am Missing. ???
Plus there are two threads going here this one and Re: Francis Ballantyne Mysetry.
There were two Francis Ballantynes to parents John Ballantyne and Mary Miller. The first Francis was born about 1814 and the second was actually John Douglas Francis Ballantyne born about 1819 in Castleton. He died in New Zealalnd and is buried at Crookson Cemetary (died on 24/9/1901) - quote from the other thread.
I did presume that there was one Francis who was born in 1814, and not two. I only have a birth record for one, and looked on the IGI to verify this one. There are a lot of Ballantyne names on the IGI, did miss this one.
I am in AUS but just about in the same time sphere, more direct contact may be better.

Hi Michelle
Sorry about getting the birth date order of the three children mixed up. You are right.
The Francis name is a bit confusing. I am not sure why our John Douglas Francis Ballantyne called himself Francis but in NZ anyway he was always known as Francis. Going by his death records he was born about 1819.
Incidentally our records say that Jessie Douglas was a 2nd cousin to John Douglas Francis Ballantyne but we are unable to find out which side of the family she comes from.
Our records go back another two generations from John Douglas Francis Ballantyne if you are interested.
Maybe you could email me direct at

I would be interested to know what happened to George as we don't know very much about this family as our connection is from the youngest daughter of the first family.

Hi Michelle,
Can I ask about your interest in George Henry Ballantyne. He was my Great Grandfather & father of my grandmother Mary Ann. They lived in Wanaka Central Otago NZ. I would be keen to fill some gaps in my info
Regards
Tanekaha
-
I presume your George Henry Ballantyne is the same one who came out to NZ in 1860. His mother was Jessie Douglas who died as they came up the harbour into Dunedin, leaving father, John Douglas FRANCIS Ballantyne a widow for the second time with 9 children. I cannot tell you much about what happened to George after they arrived in NZ. Michelle would know more about that branch of the family, but I can fill you in on the family before they came to NZ, if that is of interest to you. If you would like to know more on the earlier history of the family, please reply on this website and I will provide the details.
Regards, Ngaio

Hi Michelle & Ngaio,
Sorry about the delay in replying. I am just working out how to use this site and also reading some of the previous discussion.
Yes I believe this is the same George Henry Ballantyne. I would be very interested in the earlier family history!
I have his parents as Francis Ballantyne and Janet Douglas. (Janet = Jessie? I did not know the story of her death)
In NZ he married Mary Ellen Norman and they had 7 Children :- Mary Ann; William Henry; Bertram Francis; Arthur Norman; Emily Fanny; Frederick George and Grace Helen. Mary Ann is my grandmother. She married Frederick Henry Ernest Collings on 14 July 1909 in Wanaka (then known as Pembroke) Central Otago NZ. (I have quite a lot of NZ family info but no Scotland)
Michelle - can you tell me which of George Henry's children you are descended from?
Regards
Tanekaha
Sorry Ngaio - I see now you are connected through Mary Ann - John Douglas Francis Ballantyne's daughter with his first wife Margaret Archibald
-
Hi Tanekaha,
My link to George Ballantyne is as follows, his son Arthur who married Mary Eleanor Jewiss, their daughter Hazel who married Daniel David Miller Andrews then divorced and moved to Australia, her daughter Pamela , Michelle.
I have a little info on your line from that booklet that was produced in the 80's about the Normans. (do you know of this book).
I would love to find out more about the Ballantynes, and associated families.

i have restarted this journey since i buried my fathers ashes( Garth Vivian- son of Albert) with his grandfather John Ballantyne son of Francis at waikaka about two weeks ago. I just passed through crookston and visited Francis's grave - tho no headstone but i have heard there are plans afoot to place one there - i am interested in the information that you have on Francis's family and prior - would love to know more
-
Hi Russell
I presume that the John Ballanatyne you are related to is the second child of John Douglas Francis Ballantyne and Margaret Francis Archibald. This John was the second child born in Ulston on 15/10/1842. If it is, what information do you want? You may already have quite a lot and I don't want to duplicate. We know John Douglas Francis's background as far back as his grandfather and grandmother, Francis Ballantyne and Margaret Robson. Please let me know and maybe we can communicate some other way. There is a lot of information about our Ballantyne heritage.
Have you met my sister, Beverly Russell? Some family members, including us, are trying to organise a headstone for John Douglas Francis Ballantyne at Crookstone Cemetery.
Looking forward to hearing from you

[My name is Cynthia Ansbacher. I live in Crookston, Mn. My Mother had a friend killed in 1935 by an elephant. My mother was only 4 and never remembered her friends name. Since my Mother has passed, I found her friends name is likely Margaret Anne Francis. If you have any details on her short life that would be sweet. E-mail is (*). Thank you. It really seemed to affect her.

I have a great Grandmother x8 Euffam Ballantyne born abt 1710 whose immediate family are in Dorset, Shaftsbury and Wimbourne Minster I have read two wills and I can not find any origin information at all on her parents, Thomas Ballantyne (in his will recorded as a salesman) and Jone, and her two uncles Robert, and John. Her mother is just listed as Jone. Euffam`s sister Jane did marry a William Little of Wimbourne Minster and his niece Ann Little, married Walter Beaty from a Scottish family in Dumfries.
Euffams siblings were Andrew, John, Helen, Elinor, Jane, James, Martha and Thomas, all of St Peters Shaftsbury. Though Effam married Thomas Scammell in Melbury Abbas he was from Tisbury Wiltshire.
Her uncle John Ballantyne has three children in Wimbourne Minster, Thomas, Andrew and Hellen. Euffams own children are recorded as being connected to presbyterian churches in Warminster later so I am assuming that these Ballantynes at some point came from Scotland?.
I don`t suppose anyone here has any inkling of these people?
The only nearby possible connection locally I have found is a Jane Barclay Ballentyne married to a Reverend David Hogarth a Scottish Man in Portland Dorset. I know she is connected to the Kelso line and the printers John, James and Alexander. How that ties in with my Dorset people I do not know. But the same Christian names do keep occurring. I have traced Jane Barclay Ballantyne back to a John and Jane Barclay in Kelso trying to see if there`s someone I could fit to but too many people with the same names to go any further. Can anyone help at all?
-
Euphemia Ballantyne is also a great grandmother of mine. I found a woman of that name born in Stow, Midlothian to a Jenet Broun and Thomas Ballantine on 21 Aug 1714. I have been pondering the Dorset link. I've just joined this site so I can reply. Otherwise I'd have sent a PM.
