Title: Completed
Post by: joppo1968 on Friday 24 October 08 08:58 BST (UK)
I might be asking too much but I'm looking for a birth for an Isaac Champion (parents, Isaac Champion & Mary Ann Graham) in 1803, possibly Norfolk Island? He doesn't appear on Tas Pioneer Index, as Hobart Town wasn't settled until 1804 & he doesn't appear on NSW online BDM's. Any ideas IF his birth that early could be found anywhere?

Thanks,

Mike.

Were Isaac & Mary Ann convicts?  And what makes you think they were on NI?

If they were you might look at Irene Schaffer's site   http://members.optusnet.com.au/~schafferi/#F  there is a list of books that are very useful if you are chasing people on NI.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the below link but I don't think that Isaac & Mary Ann were convicts. I don't know how reputable my source is but an Isaac Champion, no date, TAS, appears on James Hugh Donohoe's CD "Births in Australia 1788-1828" CD. The parents went from NSW to Norfolk Island arriving May 1803. A child Isaac Champions is recorded on Norfolk Island from May 1803.

That's all I had from CD but no birth in Tasmania or NSW, so maybe the CD record is correct?

Thanks a lot,

Mike.

Mike

I suggest you still look for those books in the library as they don't deal with just convicts.

You never know your luck in the big city  ;D

Hi Joppo, not sure of the status of your request, but Isaac Champion and Mary Graham were my Gx4 grandparents.  Isaac was a sergeant in the NSW Corps and Mary was a convict from Cork in Ireland.  They met on the trip to NSW (where Isaac's first wife died) and obviously took up together.  They arrived in NSW in 1802 and are recorded as going to Norfolk Island (NI) on HMS Buffalo in 1803.  Isaac is recorded as returning to NSW from NI aboard HMS Investigator on 25 Feb 1805.  A child, Isaac Champion, was recorded as being evacuated from Norfolk Island aboard HMS Harrington on the 22nd of February 1805, and arrived in Port Jackson the 6th of March.  I have no other information about him.  Hope this helps.

Do you have any other information on Isaac and Mary?

Regards,
Tony

Hi Tony

Welcome to Rootschat  ;D

Joppo was last online here in February 2016 but as long as his email address hasn't changed should receive a notification that you have posted and hopefully come back soon.
