Title: Hammett
Post by: Rhodie on Wednesday 05 November 08 17:53 GMT (UK)
I have quite a large database of the surname Hammett, my main interest is in Dorset, particuarly Tolpuddle but I have gathered quite a few others from other parts of the country over the years.

Hello Rhodie,

My g g grandfather was Thomas Hammett 1829-1888 from Blandford forum but I believe his father was William circa 1794-1880?  from wimborne. any connection to your Hammett's?

From across the pond!

yes Rhodie,

all your info is correct.
I know there was much movement over the centuries between Northern France and England.
I have many Huguenots whose names look English or have been Anglicized like Marshall, Blanchard or Carre to Carr.

My hypothesis is that Hammett may well have French origins, your thoughts?
